In first place had to be necrotic energy, a decaying energy borne from the comnect of the afterlife and the main plane. It sped up decay when the veil between worlds was thinnest.
Its gave life to the dead, be it by natural, or unnatural causes. Like spells, ritauls, ect.
Its real potential came when control of the magic fell under necromancers and Liches. Where the energies can be most used to its effectiveness.
