The King of Spades

NOTICE!! For all my readers, I’m sorry to announce that I am no longer going to continue posting at Webnovel This is NOT because I want to stop the story or anything, rather it’s because if I was to continue in Webnovel and get contracted, I would lose all rights to my novel and it wouldn’t be mine anymore. But don’t worry, I am still going to post my novel, just at another site: specifically, Royal Road. There, although I won’t get a guaranteed contract, I can still earn money if my novel becomes popular and I start a patreon. Once again, for all the loyal readers of “The King of Spades”...Thank you, so so much! your support and reviews have always been a real motivator for me to continue, and if you wish to continue reading, you can search 'The King of Spades' in Royal Road Another Note!!: You might notice that there will be a few changes in the Royal Road version, that is because I polished the main characters personality. It's not a big change really so don't worry. it's more like this: Before: Because of being abandoned the MC swore to improve himself as much as he can in order to survive since he is under the thought that no one would cherish him if he stayed the same. After: The whole desperate for survival is only briefly foreshadowed as it will slowly but surely be explored in future chapters. This way, the MC's actions wouldn't be so random, and there is a sense of direction for his character. The world was out of nowhere bathed by a mysterious blue energy that led to people suddenly receiving "Gifts" . A power that gave them supernatural abilities they've never seen nor experienced before according to each individual's nature, ambition, and mindset. Follow the story of Jericho, an orphaned boy abandoned by his parents at a very young age of a few months old. He was born with a peculiarly strong memory so he was able to remember clearly the day his parents abandoned him, which shaped his nature and attitude. Due to this action he swore to never expect something from anyone unless he further betters himself. Either through luck or through fate, because of the phenomenon, he received a gift that allowed him to infinitely train past the physical limit of his body, allowing him to surpass the limits of former humanity through time. But what can this boy do to make his gift blossom? Will blood, sweat, and tears be enough? or will luck and opportunities truly be a factor when you consider that many too had the fortune of receiving gifts of their own? someone whose tempered will to survive gained him a special yet peculiar gift. What will he do in a world that now brought fantasy to reality? Come follow his journey. Author's Note: This is fictional so if your planning on reading this please bear with how mature the kids in the novel are in the early chapters. They have past's of their own that forced them to mature, but there's also the part that some of them were just born special...ahem... MC. // 11-21-22, Hello readers author here: I've changed a couple of things in the first and second chapters so if you read it again you can find quite an improvement. //12-05-22, I've taken out the "The Watchful king of the Dark" part in the title since after outlining the story I thought it was unnecessary and doesn't fit the MC. // 12-21-22, changed start of the story from 2012 to 2017 // Although in paper the MC's gift sounds overpowered, the gift itself requires constant training and is a late bloomer so expect quite a bit of grinding elements. // I try to make his decisions as grounded as possible so no stupid fights should stem from him, I hope. //// The cover art is not mine, Credits to the Owner, Found it in Pinterest, very beautiful art. In fact the design of our MC is starting to change from what I envisioned due to the art. if the original owner of the art is reading this, I will immediately have it taken down if it inconveniences you.

The only break

Since we ended up spending a lot of time on the tour, we only had to go through 2 classes this morning. General Language and Mathematics.

We hoped that only Language had unbelievable requirements, but how do you think we felt when we were suddenly told to master Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division ....in an hour.

I'm confident that I can catch up because of my cheat-like memory, but the same couldn't be said for the other 3.

"Sob*... what the hell." (Fred)

"Urgh! I'm already good with the mathematics parts since I was already taught that while being homeschooled, but he did not even give us time to digest it! Saying that we'll be moving on to fractions tomorrow and that there will be a quiz on Saturday, what does he think we are, robots!?" (Darius)

"mumble mumble*." (Cole)

Author's Note: the project started on February 1, 2018, which is a Thursday

Looking at the three dragging their seemingly lifeless bodies to the door, I was about to open it when the instructor suddenly called out to us.

"Oh, and in case you are wondering, starting tomorrow, 6 days a week from Monday to Saturday, the following would be your schedule for the 1st two years, so take note." (Kurt)

Moving away, he showed us what was written on the whiteboard behind him;

[8:30 am – 9:00 am Morning meditation

9:00 am – 10:00 am Science and Technology

10:00 am – 11:00 am General Language

11:00 am – 12:00 pm General Mathematics

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm LUNCH

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Combined Physical training at the forest

3:00 pm – 5:00 pm Continued Physical training at the indoor gym (Specialized for Combat Class); Management and Entrepreneurship (Specialized for Non-Combat Class)

5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Weapons Training at the arena (Specialized for Combat Class); Honing of Non-Combat related abilities and gifts (Specialized for Non-Combat Class);

7:00 pm – 8:00 pm Combined Mental Training at the Forest]

"Other than Lunch, we get no breaks at all huh." (Jericho)

"" Arrgghhh!!!"" (Cole and Fred)

Philip said that once we get older the schedule would begin even earlier than now. The amount of sleep a child gets will be one of the best supplements for growth so I guess we were given enough time for that.

Becoming more impatient after knowing of our future schedule, Fred hurried us to go.

"Hey let's go to the cafeteria already! We've only got one hour!"

"Stop crying like a brat we'll be going there now ... but... which way was it again?" (Darius)

""...""

"Sigh...follow me" (Jericho)

"" B-boss!""

"Yeah yeah, you're welcome."

{With how big this place is, it's no surprise they forgot.}

Leading the way for the other 3, I immediately went in the direction of the cafeteria based on my memories. Of course, we didn't forget about Archie whose room was the closest to ours.

{C-1 is too far from us, by the time we get there I'm sure Millie would already be in the cafeteria.}

Walking in the hallway everything was going well to that point, but for some reason, I started sensing that something was wrong, like someone was following us.

Wanting to see what exactly was happening, I turned my head to look behind. What I saw truthfully stumped me as behind the other 4 were almost all the C-2 participants and some NC-2 participants.

"..."

Noticing that I was looking at them, some kid at the front with a combat badge on his chest acted as a representative and talked about the reason.

"...we... forgot which specific direction to go to the cafeteria .... i-is it ok if we follow you?"

"Ah..."

Thinking that it wasn't a problem, I was just about to agree when someone suddenly pushed his way up front and started yelling.

"Move! Stop blocking our way!"

Looking to see who it was, I once again lifted my head from a downward position.

The boy despite being so young looked like the typical bully you'd see in manga or something. His hair was designed in a way where the sides were thinly shaved while the top was elevated.

{Pfft! A mohawk with that face?} (Fred)

He had thin eyebrows and a short nose, as well as a thin frame and face. He also had fierce-looking eyes but after what the trio had gone through (Jericho's rampage) his eyes didn't seem to bother them too much.

As for his clothing, he wore a black leather jacket fitted to him with a badge of two swords crossing each other on his chest. I knew who he was, ranked 59th Lonzo Grant, just a single rank below me. He was a current "classmate".

Looking at us with clear annoyance, he along with about a dozen people following behind him immediately overtook us. But before he could fully walk past us I could notice him and his colleagues looking at Darius with anger in their eyes.

Well, I think I know why though.

Due to the intensity of what Darius did, you can't just expect everyone who was involved to just forgive him immediately. Some, just like that boy and his companions still hold immense hatred towards Darius, and that was understandable.

What I couldn't understand though is the fact that a strange rumor is going around about how I was the main culprit and that I ordered Darius and his lackeys to bully everyone so I could appear as a hero.

{I guess they didn't see me completely smashing Darius' face in huh... wait, isn't that a good thing?}

....

Arriving at the cafeteria it seems that only a few have arrived as the cafeteria still felt a little barren.

Looking around I also couldn't find Lonzo and his crew anywhere.

{Did that guy get lost? Well, serves him right}

Since we'd now arrived the other kids that were following us started to disperse. Not before saying thank you to me though.

"Let's all get our food and find a seat immediately. After the others arrive the seats will get packed with people."

'"Ok~~."'

Going to where a lunch lady was, we each took individual plates by the side and went to her. Before she gave us any food though, she first asked about our ranks.

After seeing that what we said matched that from her records, she then started handing out food. Darius got the largest portion while Fred got the smallest.

Well, despite how the portions differed, they were all greens by the end of the day so no jealousy occurred between us.

"Sigh... back home I could eat meat anytime I want. Keep this up and I really might become thinner in the future." (Darius)

Sitting down on our seats we ate our food with dead pan looks. Although we couldn't really eat meat in the orphanage as well, that doesn't mean we got used to eating only vegetables.

I mean what child prefers broccoli over chicken?

As we ate, more and more children started arriving, one group was the 'advanced combat group' with Millie in the middle.

I was about to call out to her but after seeing the people she was with I controlled myself and Fred who was also about to greet her.

"Rank 2 Elric and Rank 4 Dahlia, as well as other advanced class participants huh."

Rank 1 Yuchen was also there, however, he seems to be keeping his distance, as if he didn't want anything to do with the others

"Hm?" (Darius)

"Nothing."

Although we both noticed each other, it was too awkward to greet each other when a certain caste system was starting to form so we only discreetly nodded at each other and went on with our business.

A few more minutes passed and it was now 12:50 pm, 10 minutes before the start of Combined Physical training when the speakers started turning on.

A jingle first played to inform us that a message was coming, and after that, a man's voice suddenly sounded.

"Ding ding dong* All participants, please proceed to the forest, I repeat, please proceed to the forest. Tardiness will not be tolerated."

Ending it with that the voice cut off.

As I was already finished eating I stood up and handed my plate to the lunch lady.

{Looks like we're finally starting with the fun parts}

As I thought so, a slight unnoticeable smirk formed.

Chapter 32nd!

I'm planning on doing a timeskip soon, so please bear with the info dumps just a little more~~
