Rani gave her thanks to Derrek, then walked back over to the table where Rory had been sitting. She found Katherine hovering nearby with a plate in her hands.
"Katherine," she said. "Have you seen Rory?" She attempted to sound casual, which of course Katherine could detect right away.
"No, I haven't, and I certainly would have. He does stand out in a crowd," she winked at Rani. "Flashy sort of man, isn't he?"
A flash of anger flitted across Rani's features. "Actually, Rory is very quiet and reserved; you're only saying that because of his hair."
"And his eyes," Katherine said unapologetically. "I guess everyone in his family is like that, so I guess it's normal where he comes from."
She still doesn't understand, thought Rani. What he looks like isn't who he is. But she kept silent.
Katherine gave a glass of champagne to one of the guests.
