The King's System

A King. A cultivator. A god. Three lives, one man. Watch as his glorious 4th life leads him to the apex! ------------------------------- "What are you doing?!" "Huh? I'm sleeping." "But this is your introduction!" "And what makes you think I care about something like that?" ------------------------------- Ahem. Watch as his gloriously "lazy" 4th life leads him to the top! ----------- My entry for Writing Prompt 32-a: System (Male Lead) Chapter length is around 1150 on average. ----------- P.S. the start of the novel is poking fun at generic reincarnation novels where the MC becomes a ruthless killer despite being a normal earthling. The annoying dialogue with the system is included in that. Also, first time writing so expect some less than good writing.

Adventurer's Guild

Hull is within sight. For some reason, the closer we get to Hull, the more frequent the beast and monster attacks.

Previously it would be at most once every three days. Recently, it's been getting to the point where two or three attacks occur within one day.

The town of Hull itself must be getting swamped with beasts every day then!

This is bad. What if this results in a beast wave? I'd have come at the worst possible time!

But if that really were the case, then at least I could level up a bit. Our levels have stayed stagnant for way too long.

We approach the gate to enter Hull, and unlike the other town, there's a strict security check this time.

"Halt! Where's your identities?" (???)

"Hello, sir! Arin and I are adventurers, and this is Catherine, my girlfriend." (Daniel)

I'm afraid that the incoming beast wave will push people's opinions of beastmen down the drain. Although there is obviously no relation between the two, human brains tend to think in weird directions when bad things happen.

Arin and I show our adventurer IDs to the guard, and he steps aside to let us pass. Before he does that though, he sends a look of disdain towards Catherine. I've already made a mental note. If there really is a beast wave, then the first person I'm not helping is him.

Anyway, Arin and I should really check in with the Adventurer's Guild. We can also take this opportunity to sign Catherine up. Back at Border Town, her class was still Innkeeper so there was no way for us to sign her up.

Walking into the Guild building, we can see that there are numerous requests pinned up onto the board, with the most prominent one coming from the Guild itself.

There are also countless adventurers bustling about, whether handing in quests, dismantling, or maintaining their gear.

Arin, Catherine and I walk up to the Guild request.

{Urgent Quest!

A beast wave is incoming. Help defend Hull!

Reward: 500 gold, and extra gold depending on how many beasts you kill.}

(A/N: non-system and non-speech text that is read will be shown with {})

Seems like I was right. There really is a beast wave headed towards Hull.

It's a shame, but I really think we should leave Hull.

However, Catherine and Arin seem to have different ideas.

Hull is considered the trade capital of Corus. As such, there is always a vibrant display of goods in the market; probably even more so than in Candor, the capital.

As well as that, there are all the benefits that one can expect from the cultural melting pot of such a town. The cuisine is varied, and the fashion is exquisite. The workmanship of the items is beyond good, and the service from the staff is top notch.

Alas, this peaceful and upbeat scene will end in a couple of days, when the town goes into high alert just before the beast wave.

Sigh… I guess I'll just have to make the best use of this opportunity.

Walking towards a small alleyway, I take out around 200 of my King's Guard. There's no point in taking out any more, but too little and I might not get the results I wanted.

My plan is to send these Guards into the beast wave beforehand, to thin down the amount coming towards us. Like that, I can indirectly protect Catherine without exposing the fact that I own these troops.

They'll also gain experience, and any of the beast corpses can be retrieved by me later on.

As a side bonus, it will also probably reduce the pressure on the town's defence systems. You can thank me later, local lord.

After that's done, I take Catherine from our inn and sign her up as an adventurer.

She's given the same introductory speech as everyone else, and I got really bored when I heard it.

"Hey, this isn't a place for little brats like you!" (???)

Sigh… here's the template. A random adventurer who thinks they're good at fighting because their a slightly higher rank, bullying new entrants. How should I deal with it? Should I ignore him, or give a bashing that he won't be able to forget?

Hmm… forget it. This town needs all the able-bodied adventurers it can get.

"Catherine, we're done here. Let's go back to the inn." (Daniel)

"Un." (Catherine)

Catherine is currently disguising her identity of being a beastman, so that's also another reason why I chose to avoid the conflict.

"Hey! Don't ignore me!" (???)

Why is this guy so persistent?

"What do you want?" (Daniel)

"Hehe, you finally responded. Do you know who I am?" (???)

"No. If I knew, then I wouldn't have bothered with you." (Daniel)

"*cough* pretty cocky, huh? I'll only tell you this once, so remember it well! My name is Rasi!" (Rasi)

Rasi? What kind of name is that?

"So what? Is that supposed to mean anything special?" (Daniel)

"H-Huh? You don't know me, the only B-rank adventurer in the entire Kingdom of Corus?" (Rasi)

"Is that because you aren't good enough for A-class, or because the C-class people are too crap?" (Daniel)

"Y-You!" (Rasi)

I need to train my mouth not to auto-fire retorts like this. The way this conversation is turning out is not very good.

"Look, I'll cut you some slack, so just let us go." (Daniel)

"C-Cut ME some slack?! Kid, that's what I should be saying to you!" (Rasi)

"So what exactly do you want?" (Daniel)

"That's simple! I want you to give me some money in exchange for teaching you how to survive." (Rasi)

"Are you crazy? There are plenty of adventurer schools with better teachers than you." (Daniel)

"JUST LISTEN TO ME AND GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!" (Rasi)

And there it is, his true nature. An angry and arrogant prick who thinks he's something in this world.

"Sorry to break it to you, but you really can't beat us in a fight." (Daniel)

"We'll see about that!" (Rasi)

Isn't there a Guild rule about fighting while in a Guild building? Ah, looks like there is.

The Guildmaster of this branch is coming down now that he's heard all the ruckus.

And the first thing he sees is Rasi rushing at me and a seemingly defenceless girl.

Although I didn't want to start this conflict, at least I get to have a meeting with the Guildmaster.

Then I can discuss some conditions and extra rewards for helping.

The Guildmaster rushes in front of us. He seems to want to protect us, even though we don't need anything of that sort.

He catches Rasi's rash punch, and proceeded to twist it into an unimaginable angle.

Letting out an extremely high-pitched scream, Rasi crumpled onto the ground with tears in his eyes.

He got exactly what he deserved. Now, for the meeting with the Guildmaster.

2nd chapter of the day.

Meeting with the Guildmaster next.
