Chapter 25

“No,” said Bryan. “He’s a bit shy when it comes to that.”

“Have you told him that you love him?”

Bryan looked at her. Something about the way she was asking her questions annoyed him. He knew he was frowning and yet just as he couldn’t be sure why Francesca was suddenly so interested in his romantic life, he was equally as uncertain as to why he was wearing such a dark expression.

“No. If I told him that, it would ruin everything.”

“But if you’re in love with each….” She left the sentence hanging and collected her books. “We should get going.”

Bryan picked his books up. “Thanks for the chat.”

Francesca smiled a flickering, uncertain smile. “Any time.”

They both turned around just as John was walking past with his arm around his latest girlfriend. They looked at each other, though not a single word was uttered. John smiled at Francesca, one of the only girls he hadn’t had sex with, and she smiled back.

After he’d gone Bryan asked her, “Why do you smile at him like that?”
