One Week - II

Our house is very old, it seems that it'll collapse at any moment and we barely have money for our food... much less for the arrangements of the house. Sometimes I wonder if we'll be able to live in a comfortable home, where we can have food and clothes at our disposal. I hope that today is the day that I'll take my first step to make this dream come true.

With everything ready I opened the door to my room, an old door with cracks everywhere, I had to be sneaky so they wouldn't hear me leave.

The house was so small that I had to go through my parents' room for me to leave. When I entered the room I started walking slowly so that the floor would not creak, almost reaching the door I looked at them and whispered.

"I'll try to be back before the sunrise."

I turned to the exit and opened the door ready to start this little adventure. I stopped for a second, took a deep breath, and then took the first step towards my dream.

My house was on the lowest part of the hill, where all the poor were, hundreds of houses almost collapsing, to the point that some people already lived on the street and others went to their families houses where they slept on the floor because there were no free spaces.

In the middle of the hill, people with connections to the church lived a good life however they never went down to see how is life here, because in their eyes the people at the bottom are just slaves who work to feed them... and to be honest, it is no lie that everything they have at the table is from our hard work.

And at the top, it was where those known as "Gods" live, the priests are always up there and they never leave their church, that job is left to their guards who protect all the streets and bridges around the church.

There is a dense forest all over the hill, with streams, waterfalls, wild animals, barricades, and the prison of those who are against the Church.

No one can approach the Church itself, as it is protected all day. And here I am, trying to get into the most protected place in Drefor.

Going up the hill, I would have to go towards the river where I could cross the forest, I have to stay away from all the main roads to avoid getting caught. My father once told me that all the people who were caught on the roads by the guards were never seen again, I didn't want to have the same fate.

Halfway there, I looked back and saw the sun about to rise.

"I have to trust my father to calm my mother down ... I hope they understand."

The forest was huge, it seemed like it never ended. I had to stop for a while, I was too tired, I had to drink water and eat some of the bread I brought from home. I sat beside the river on a pile of rocks with some bushes around it. I could rest without anyone seeing me there.

After 1 hour and a few minutes, I got up, stretched and went back up the hill, until I saw a wall in the distance, which stretched the rest of the way. I realized that this is where the "nobles" live and that I would have to find a way to get into the wall and get supplies to continue my journey.

I walked by the wall for a few kilometres until I found what looked like an entrance, there was water there and a horrible smell, I didn't know what it was but I was sure it was the way to the other side of the wall, I had to take the risk and get in.

The walls were damp, full of moss and tree roots.

"It looks like nobody's been here for years."

After walking a few meters I came to an intersection, I had to choose where to go, I looked around and saw a piece of clothing in the left passage, it was stuck in a root.

It could only mean that either someone passed by or came from the end of this path. I moved on and every time I took a step, it got deeper. I could feel objects going against me and the smell was getting worse...

"I have to get out of here as soon as possible!"

I started walking faster and the path started to get darker.

It seemed like there was no end, I started touching the walls to guide myself.

I continued like this for about 20 minutes until I saw a light coming from above, I approached slowly with fear that someone was there.

Getting closer I looked up and saw an old iron bar that was already rusty.

There was no space for me to go through the iron bar, all I could do was just take a look outside from a little hole in the wall, looking around I saw huge stone houses, dirt streets with gravel scattered over it and a small fountain, I had never seen such a thing.

However I didn't see anyone out there so I used this opportunity to break the bars, I took off my shirt, wrapped it in my hand so I wouldn't get hurt and started hitting it with all my strength, fortunately, the bars were so rusty that with just 3 strokes they fell into the water.

"Luckily I didn't make much noise."

I went up and looked around me, it seems that nobody heard.

"I'm so tired..."

I looked at the sky, the moon was there ... it was already night.

"I need to find a place to sleep. It looks like I'm going to stay here for a while."
