St. Mary's has been the home of many children. While the Sisterhood does everything it can, they're still limited to doing so much.

No one cares about an orphan. No matter how gifted he or she is. I look around the rest of the room this early morning and see many of the kids still doing their work.

"Alex! Run across the street and pick up some newspapers for us! Some of the infants need new diapers!"

I'm the only one selected from the kids to help with anything. It's primarily due to being the way I am.

I stand up without a word and make my way to the door. I'm not a big talker. It's who I am. I prefer to think.

Sister Beth watches me leave to be safe. I walk up to the newspaper box, take out several pages, and tuck them into my jacket.

"Get off me!!"

I hear the voice of Sister Bella coming from the alley by the store. I run over and peak. I see a man being handsy with Sister Bella. She was supposed to be back by now.

She's scratching and fighting to knock the man off. I quickly run out of my hiding spot and hit the man with all my might.

He tumbles off Bella.

"Get out of here, Alex!"

Just following my instincts.

I notice she's bleeding from her leg. The snow on the ground is red. I look toward the man, and he pulls out a knife.

Bella continues to yell at me, but it soon muffles out as I hear a buzzing in my ears.

This has happened before... Many times before...

I focus on the man's head and imagine it popping like a balloon. Bella stops yelling and stares at the scene in shock. She watches as the man's head explodes.

The buzzing in my ears stops, and I quickly move my small body toward her. She places her hand on me for support.

It doesn't take long to get back home.

I walk off silently towards my little table, where I read books. I zone out in my own world.

I'm brought out of my book with a hand on my shoulder.

"Alex... Can you explain how you did that..."

Beth begins talking. I close my book and stand up. Leaving the room, not wanting to talk.

I worry about him so much; he's devilishly smart. He saved Bella, and while the events seem unbelievable, he still tried to stop the man. It's a miracle the way they came out of that situation.

Alex has always been different... But from Bella's description, there are things to be worried about...
