A massive fireball the size of the entire corridor appeared in front of them from the corridor on their right. Ammine stopped herself midair just in time, almost throwing Falte into it as she did so. "Woah! Don't toss me into that! I'll die!" he shouted in a panicked voice. But Ammine didn't hear his cry as it was cut out by the sound of the fireball as it wooshed past them.
They were so close to the fireball that they could feel a wave of hot air blow into them as it shot by. It even almost burned off the front tip of Falte's shoes. After the danger passed, Ammine sped up her pace and flew as fast as her tired and injured body could allow her down the tunnel. Her entire body screamed in pain but she couldn't slow down. The dragon was right behind them, or maybe he was to the right of them still. Either way, he was close to them. She may not be able to see or feel his presence, but she knew that he was somewhere around them for sure.
"Slooooooow dooooown!" Falte told her. The wind was blowing into his face, slurring his words, and his feet and legs were dangling far behind him. Ammine wanted to tell him to shut up since she was working her a*s off trying to get them out of the sewers and away from that dragon while he was doing nothing but dragging her down. As much as she wanted to drop him right now and leave him for bait as she escaped on her own, he was her teammate and she couldn't do that.
'D*mn it!' She cursed to herself in her head. If only this had been a solo mission or at the very least, a two-person mission. Then things wouldn't be so complicated. In the first place, they didn't need so many people for a recon mission but Tornon insisted that they send at least four people. She couldn't go against her king's orders though she really didn't agree with him sending so many people.
Though she had to admit, the other two were useful at times. Jasyeu got them into Silverfield easily and quietly. Falte was an expert at stealth and assassination. He was also good at fingering things out and planning. The only problem was that he wasn't being useful right now. She really wished that he could use his brain to figure out some way for them to get out of this mess at this very time and moment.
Another tunnel-sized fireball came at them again from their right but Ammine didn't stop and let it pass by them this time. Even though her body didn't want her to, she forced herself to accelerate, increasing her speed and flying by the fireball just in time as it roared by behind them.
A hot gust of air slammed into Ammine, causing her grip on Falte to loosen a little as she felt her muscles give in. "Dooon't drooop meeee!" Contrary to what Falte said, her arms were yelling at her to drop Falte. It took all her willpower to comply with his wish to hang on to the demon and continue flying.
Ammine saw light creep up in the tunnel ahead of them. At first, she thought she was hallucinating and that the light was because her vision was beginning to blur, but she opened and closed her eyes and saw that it was real. They were going to make it out of the tunnel. Seeing how the exit was so near, Ammine felt a sudden surge of energy go through her body and she increased her speed enough more and zoomed through the corridor. It was a good thing that it was a level and straight path since she wouldn't be able to stop or turn at the speed she was going.
Falte's body went limp as he lost the fight against the speed and his body went almost parallel with the floor. He wanted to say something to Ammine but the wind was too strong and he couldn't speak. Heck, he could barely even keep his eyes open.
Just as Ammine was about to burst out of the sewers, a large shadow slammed into her and sent both the demons crashing into a wall. "Ooooo... What a shame. So close yet so far," a voice mockingly said to them. But neither of them could hear him properly since both of them were dazed from the impact. Their heads were spinning and their ears were ringing.
After their visions cleared up, they saw a half draconic being hovering in front of them just before the exit. He was still in humanoid form but had horns, claws, wings, and scales on his body. "Sorry, I don't hold any grudges against you two but you're going to need to die for me. I can't have you going around exposing my identity." The half-dragon opened his mouth and breathed fire into the tunnel.
Ammine reacted as quickly as she could and took off her cloak and tore off Falte's too. She then overlapped them and put them on her back, positioned herself in front of Falte, and blocked the flames with her body. She could only pray that the two layers filled most of the holes and only some of the fire would go through and hit her.
The flames hit her and her back flared up in pain as the heat scorched her back. But the cloaks were doing their job and blocked out most of the fire. The attack continued for about ten seconds before the dragon had to stop to take a breath. Ammine saw this opportunity and threw off the cloak and charged at him with her fist ready in a desperate attempt to knock him down.
