The Heart of the Winds

Cover by Rinochannn --- The world was once ruled by demons that terrorized all the other races. The races banded together and formed an alliance, wiping out most of the demon race and forcing the survivors to go into hiding. With the fall of the demons, the races were finally free. However, the peace did not last for long. Twelve years after the war, the human race broke the truce and attacked the other races, killing and enslaving all of them. Finally, with all the other races out of the way, the human race declared war on one another. After many years of bloody conflict and betrayal, only two human kingdoms remain out of the original seven. Kies is an orphan that was adopted into a noble family that is known for producing powerful magic-users. He finds that he can use magic, but since his magic lacks offensive capabilities, it is deemed useless. The war rages on between the two kingdoms and Kies knows that he will eventually be caught up in it, so he needs to find some way to become stronger. But as he does so, he discovers that not all things are as they seem...

Infiltrating Silverfield

"No, it's still too risky," Falte said. He was still against the idea because there was still the chance of someone seeing them if they tried to fly over the wall.

"But can't you just disguise us as birds or something?" Kies asked, pointing out how Falte had turned them into large animals before when they were caught by the soldiers.

"If only it were that easy."

"What? You can't?"

"His magic is the most effective when transforming into something of the same size. It takes a lot of magic to turn into something bigger or smaller," Ammine explained.

"In other words, if I were to turn us into birds, we'd be the biggest birds anyone has ever seen. If someone sees us, they will definitely report us since animals that big are considered threats," Falte added to Ammine's explanation.

"Oh, so that's why."

"Instead of thinking about other ways to get in, why not think of a way in which we can get in faster?" Falte suggested to Kies while pointing at the hole that Jasyeu was digging.

"Hmm. Couldn't we just break the part of the wall that is underground since we'll be covering it up afterward anyway? It's not like anyone would notice," Kies pointed out after thinking for a moment.

Ammine and Falte looked at each other and then at the hole, and then back at each other. "Wouldn't that make too much noise?" Falte asked.

"Let me ask Jasyeu if she could do it quietly." Ammine walked over to the hole and kneeled down and asked Jasyeu about it. Jasyeu said something back to her, and then Ammine said something back to Jasyeu again before walking back over to the two and telling them, "She said she could cut a section of the wall and pull it out without making much of a commotion."

"Okay, then tell her to do that."

"Already did. She's working on it right now. All we need to do is keep an eye out for soldiers."

"Thank god there are no patrols. But regardless, we need to keep an eye out. I'll take the right, you'll take the left," Falte told Kies. "And I guess Ammine will guard Jasyeu while she's digging."

Kies and Falte moved to their respective positions and kept an eye out for any soldiers that may be wandering about while Ammine sat next to the hole, guarding Jasyeu as they dug. Luckily, the spot that they were digging at was surrounded on both sides by Otane's massive siege weapons that for some reason were lying around after the battle. Kies didn't know how Silverfield managed to repel the invasion, but he had a hunch that it had something to do with the demons showing up in the midst of the battle and disturbing everything.

Kies found a nice spot next to a medium-sized mound of dirt, climbed it, and sat down on top of it. At this height and angle, he would be able to see anyone that's coming his way. As long as they don't spot him first, there shouldn't be any problem.

For the next few minutes, Kies sat around doing nothing. Occasionally, he would see or hear a small animal, but other than that, there was nothing else around. Jasyeu's digging was quiet and he wasn't able to hear it despite being not that far from her. After some time, Ammine came and fetched him. The tunnel was done.

Kies followed her back to the hole. Falte was already there with Jasyeu, and the two of them were waiting for him and Ammine. "Let's be quick about this," Falte said when he saw the two of them approaching.

"You two could've gone through first and we would've been right behind you," Ammine told him.

"Hm, good point. But it's somewhat late for that now. It doesn't make much of a difference anyway. We still have hours before the sun rises." Falte jumped down the hole and disappeared down the tunnel that Jasyeu dug. The other three jumped down one by one and followed after Falte.

Surprisingly, the wall wasn't as thick as it looked. The tunnel was only a few feet long and they got to the other side in just a couple of seconds. Afterward, the three guarded Jasyeu again as she filled up the tunnel starting at the other end. It was a lot quicker than digging and Jasyeu finished patching the entire thing in under a minute.

"That was quick," Falte noted.

"First thing first, Kies, where is the castle that beastman was talking about," Ammine asked him as he is the one who is the most familiar with the city. She was really in a rush to rescue the demon that was trapped there.

"It's in the center of the kingdom, so we can just take any road and it will eventually lead to it," Kies told her.

"Got it." Ammine immediately began to head off towards the castle but Falte stopped her. "What!?" she growled.

"Are you sure that the first thing you should be doing is barging into the castle when we just got here?" he asked her. "I agree that rescuing Messa is important, but this isn't the time. We should wait until we have more information," he reasoned.

"She might not live till then," Ammine argued back.

The two stared at each other for a good while, neither letting up. But eventually, Falte backed down and sighed.

"Guess we'll go with your plan and rescue Messa first. Not sure how we'll accomplish that with no information, but might as well try. I hope you know that you're taking full responsibility for this," he told Ammine.

"I know."

"Okay then, lead the way."
