Why Would I Be Jealous?

Lanre read down and saw that the class representative had also advised those who did not see their names in the graduation list not to panic. According to the class rep, some of them may end up seeing their names in the NYSC list which is the final list. Whosoever does not find his or her name in that list will have to sort themselves out with the school. It could be an issue of missing result or failure in on a particular course.

Lanre smiled with hope for those who’s names were not on the list. If they are lucky enough, they will still graduate. But she was yet to see what happened and who they were mocking.

She saw a few messages of some concerned persons talking about those whose names did not appear. But some were mocking them.

Just then a particular chat caught her attention. It was from Victory the girl she always warned Ify about when they were still in school, “the class’s most notorious gossip”.

“While you guys are here talking about those who graduated and those who didn’t, why don’t you all talk about someone who barely attended classes and still came out with first class?” Victory had said.

But then again, it was never said anybody failed. It was just some people could not find their name on the graduation list. And Victory had concluded that they failed.

“What happened if she has first class? Are you jealous?” Another person had replied. It was a young man Lanre had never spoken to in class. But she knew him because he was popular on the group chat and was always dropping opinions.

“Why would I be jealous? She may have first class but she is a big time loser. Don’t you know that?” Victory had replied. Then one of her clique followed up her chat.

“I saw in the news that Ify, her friend is now the fiancée to the Governor’s son. I’m talking about the Governor of Lagos state”. Her clique member, Cassandra said. And Victory wanting to heighten it decided to drop their point. She lets told everyone in the group chat that there was a guy who had come to pick Lanre up when they were still in school and had kissed her on front of their departmental block. She told them that he was the governor’s son. Then she sent a picture of K kissing Lanre. Turns out someone had taken a picture of them after all.

Lanre placed the phone face down on the table. What was this all about? How could someone want to hurt her when she has done nothing wrong to the person. She wanted to reply, but had to refrain. She needed to control herself, that was why she dropped the phone.

At that moment she realised that the Uber driver was waiting for her outside. She stood up from the chair, picked her goodies and rushed towards the exist. But ended up bumping into someone.
