What Is The Guarantee?

Mrs. Okafor was shocked to see Lanre waiting for her. She wondered what Lanre was doing there. Or has Lanre suddenly turned a lawyer? She sat down on the chair on the other side of the table facing Lanre. A smile crept into Lanre’s lips. She told Mrs. Okafor how good she was feeling having seen her and knowing that she’s okay. The woman asked her if she was worried about her.

“Of course I was worried! You are like a mother to me. You treated me well when I was at your place for Anita’s wedding. You even wanted me to be your daughter in-law. For someone who love me so much, what is a little bit of worry and concern? Hope you are fine?” Lanre asked the woman. She told Lanre she was okay but she only needed to leave. She told Lanre she was innocent and must have been framed by someone who wants to see her get ruined.

“That person must be evil be evil to do such a thing to you ma. I mean, you are a nice woman! You made my brother lost his job, got Ify together with K after telling me to take care of K. Are you not just the nicest person in this world?” Lanre said with a smile hugging her lips. Mrs. Okafor asked her what she meant.

“Rather than looking for a way to leave this cell, do what you did to make my brother lose his job to make him get back his job. Also with your husband’s connection, I want a double promotion for him. If not forget it, this will be your first hell”. Lanre said. Mrs. Okafor was stupefied. Is it Lanre? Is she the one responsible for her being in cell?

“What you are demanding for is impossible. I can’t do such a thing. How much do you want, tell me I will pay”. Mrs. Okafor said.

“Ma, please don’t be silly! I was playing fair before but it didn’t get me anywhere, what makes you think I want stolen money?” Lanre asked.

“You did not find it difficult selling your daughter to the Okojie family all in the name of protecting her from whosoever she loves. But you are finding it difficult reinstating my brother’s job? I hope you do know that the navy is not a place for you to play politics? And you already did. Do as I say or rot here”. Lanre said. She stood up to leave.

“What is the guarantee that I will be out of here if I do as you say?” Mrs. Okafor asked. Lanre told her she should not worry about what is hers to handle and should just do as she said if she wants to get out of cell. Lanre left without looking back at Mrs. Okafor who was later taken to her cell.

The woman bit her lips. So a young girl like Lanre is the one causing her this misfortune. She would do as she says now, but she was definitely going to get back at her. She will pay Lanre for the humiliation she has passed through.
