We Made It

“We made it!” Lanre and Ify said in unison. They had just finished the last paper for the exam. They were done with final year. Four years was done with. Now, it was left for them to defend their projects and get out from the school, serve the country for a year and pursue their dreams to the fullest.

“Ify, if I tell you how happy I am that I am done with exams in this school, it will take us years to end the tales!” Lanre said to Ify.

It has been over a month and some weeks since Lanre had apologised to Ify in the kitchen for keeping mute at her. They had just finished sitting for their last exam as final year students of the department of Mass communication. And all the students were outside rejoicing pouring drinks and popping champagne.

Ify pulled Lanre’s hand towards a couple who were kissing. They were already surrounded by some of the students who just finished their exams. Some of the guys around poured champagne on them as the couple’s kissed. It was a practice some students did whenever they were done with their final exams. Almost everyone held out their phone and took video records of the kissing couple while cheering them up.

“Lanre, what’s up?” Lanre turned to see Okechukwu standing beside her, her course mate who she had insulted on a Monday morning and Ify had lied to pacify the guy on her behalf.

“I am good, what about you?” She asked. “I am ok!” Okechukwu said. Then he asked her if she will be free at night. Lanre pushed her head backwards as if she was not seeing him clearly. “Why? Do you want to take me out tonight?” Lanre asked him. He looked at her shyly that she almost burst out laughing.

“I will be free! But take note, I ain’t staying out late beyond 10 pm. 10 o’clock on the dot;” Lanre said making it clear to Okechukwu. He nodded indicating that be understood. Then she asked him if Ify can come along. He looked a bit disappointed when he asked. But she laughed thinking his countenance changed because he was scared of how much he may end up spending, she told him that she will cover up the expenses.

“That is not an issue Lanre. I was just thinking it could be just the both of us!” Okechukwu said to her. She looks at him. Then she looked around. She took his hand asking him to follow her. They got to one of the empty class rooms.

“You want to have some alone time with me?” Lanre asked him. He told her that was right. “Do you like me in anyway?” Lanre asked again. Okechukwu blew hot air. He got closed to Lanre. “I really liked you from our first year. But I could not approach you. You always have this wall built around you to keep people away”. Okechukwu said. Lanre laughed making Okechukwu to feel someone like something was wrong with the way he presented his feelings.
