Not A Taboo

Lanre left the house with her mom. Turns out her mom had already paid for Uber that would take them down to Lagos and back. She breathed in relief when she realised this. The journey would be smoother for them. Her mom was indeed very thoughtful, but she still her mother was spending too much for a thing she would not be gaining from.

They got into the Uber. She liked the way the Uber driver greeted them. She loved his diction as well as his accent. She knew from the way he speaks that he was well educated.

Lanre engaged the Uber driver in a conversation as he drove them down to their destination. She got to learn that he was indeed a graduate who had finished his master’s degree as well. When she asked him how he ended up as an Uber driver, he told her if he didn’t do it, then they probably won’t find a nice guy like him to drive them down to their destination.

“Lanre, stop distracting the Uber driver. It is against traffic law”. Mrs. Olayinka scolded her daughter. Lanre told her mother that the guy was focused enough. Besides he was not consistently replying her. He was indeed focused on his driving. But her mother would not accept that. Even when the Uber driver said it was fine, she told him that it was not. And when he wanted to say more, she shunned him by telling him that customers are always right. So the Uber driver no longer answered any of Lanre’s question.

Mrs. Olayinka did not like the way her daughter was chatting with the Uber driver. You never can tell what is going on in the heart of a man since it is not placed in a show glass for you to see the things going on. Even if it were, the things that goes on in the heart are never exposed. She could not let her daughter talk to an Uber driver, when there were governors sons and sons of renowned politicians as well as business men out there. She was positive Lanre would meet her match in this party. After all, her daughter was beautiful and very intelligent. She would not want an Uber driver to spoil things for her daughter.

The friend of a thief must be a thief, if Lanre is friend with Ify who was going to marry a Governor’s son, then Lanre should achieve something of that sort herself. Mrs. Olayinka after all, was just a mother who wanted the success of her daughter in every aspect. If a man who is wealthy comes to marry her daughter, it was not a taboo. So why settle for less, when you can get more?

Lanre knew her mother was afraid she may start up a relationship with the Uber driver and so, the reason for her act. But she was used to her mom’s overprotective attitude. She knew if she goes against the woman’s wish and continue to talk to the Uber driver, then he was not going to be the one that brings them back to Ibadan.
