CHAPTER 2

Japasa was a god who looked fearful. There were many snakes on his head. The snakes were his hair. He never appeared in a day: he always appeared in the night, and when he found someone walking a lone in the night , he kidnapped the person and used him or her as sacrifice. Because Japasa was a fearful and a powerful god, everyone feared to talk evil about him. Anyone who said evil words about him died that same night.

In this village was a woman called Aso. She was a fish monger. She and her husband, Koo Barimah was a poor farmer. Apart from their total state of Poverty, they were childless. They had married for about twenty years but tried as they could, they did not have any child. Because of this, some of their enemies gossiped about them that they had been cursed by Japasa never to have children in their marriage.

But Koo Barimah and his wife, Aso were not bothered about all the gossips that went around them in village. They knew that God's time was the best, so they were not worried. In Apamu, there was no church. This was because Apamu was a traditional village, and Japasa was against any other form of worship, except Koo Barimah and his wife. They were christians, and they attended church in a sister village, called Bonsah, except their ignorance of the importance of the minerals that they had. Because of their ignorance, people came from other towns and cities to take their resources away, without giving the indigents of Bonsah anything.

Although no one was to worship God in the village of Apamu, Koo Barimah and his wife Aso secretly worshipped God, and prayed also in their hut all the time. Koo Barimah was God fearing and kind but he had an ugly look, and he was also muscularly built. Because of these features that he portrayed some of the people of Apamu rumoured that he was an armed robber, and as such, he had gone for some body building which would make him look very fearful and therefore, frighten anyone that he went to rob so that his victim would easily give him what he would request for. So many were the bad things that they said about him and his wife but he never paid any attention to all that.

All the people of Apamu, especially the men hated the way things were going on in the village but there was nothing that they did about it. They had kept their fingers across waiting for someone who would come and save them from the wicked and selfish rulling of Japasa.

The men of Apamu were cowards. Even the women were braver than the men. Everyone was afraid to confront Japasa. This was due to an incidence that occured some few years ago concerning a young brave man of the village of Apamu called Jojo Fre. He and his wife had lived for so many years without getting a child, and they had been through evil words and insults from all concerns of the village. Then finally his wife became pregnant miraculously and at childbirth, his wife almost lost her life if he, Jojo Fre had not sold all that he had to get careful treatment and attention for his wife. But at last when his wife gave birth they were twins. And immediately it was made known that the children were twins. Japasa made his usual awful noise, symbolize that he was aware of the twins that Kojo Fre and his wife had given birth to, and so they should prepare to bring the children to him for sacrifice. This annoyed Kojo Fre so much that he ignored the instructions of Japasa. Then at night, Japasa the village god came into their hut to take away their children but Kojo Fre confronted Japasa and told him that he would not allow him to take his twin children away for sacrifice. Japasa became so annoyed that a citizen of Apamu had confronted him. So instantly, he stoke Kojo Fre dead, and carried his twin children and disappeared with them.

The next day, Kojo Fee's wife narrated the whole incidence of the people of Apamu, they all became afraid and learnt a lesson, never to confront the god of Apamu in their lives.

whenever the people of Apamu heard about Japasa, they trembled greatly. They were afraid of him because Japasa was a god who did not show mercy or love to his people but instead, he showed hatred, injustice and selfishness.
