"The deceased is James, a 34-year-old exorcist with 10 years of experience. There are no unusual signs surrounding his death."
"He is blessed by the Land of War, similar to those actively chosen in the first ritual at Isandros.""
"According to reports, his days in Calico appear to have turned him into a heavy drinker. However, we all know that water only arouses dirty desires when drunk. It has no magic to help us change reality, much less harm a full-fledged exorcist experience." The middle-aged man said.
"However, his death had the same characteristics as a normal person. That is the problem."
For those who have accepted the power of the Forces, most ordinary stimulants, such as alcohol or cigarettes, will not affect them much. There is no need to worry about whether you are an alcoholic or your lungs are filled with smoke. Because the supernatural fluctuations in your body will simply erase these effects. The average person can die from alcohol or tobacco. But for an Exorcist to die this way is unattainable.
"Do you have any impressions of James?". Althur asked.
"Not much. Since he graduated, he served in the army in the Penitas plateau, where there were frequent conflicts with the Ayaleos Kingdom. However, there seemed to be something shady going on there, so he withdrew and came to us. Then sent to Calico. After that, I didn't care anymore."
"The bishop of the church in Calico town sent a brief report asking the organization to look into the case and take care of the body. According to reports from him, who felt some problems, he asked for help from our Association. That people are often not well versed in these matters. So, they ask us to take responsibility for our people."
"Usually, if a person is affected by the Holy Places and Forces, after death they will experience mutations if not handled properly, let alone in cases of failed exorcisms. An exorcist is in jeopardy of dying for any reason due to demonic possession. However, cases involving demonic possession will leave traces that cannot be hidden from priests who worship a god." Althur said.
"For us who could not be saved by their God's grace, Death is misery. Of course, we can prepare in advance. But staring at death is not inherently a good thing. The more you look at it, the clearer it becomes."
"If the Great Alrik had not joined the King of Delight in building this kingdom, cursed ones like us would not have survived and come out of the shadows." The captain, who was filled with emotion, spoke.
"That's also called a Blessing, sir."
"Unless you become their believers, but those are like hounds that feed such believers like animals. They are like hunting dogs, scouring all over for unusual children. Fatten these lambs and lead them to slaughter."
"But they forget that, for each god, the believers are nothing more than mere sheep to be herded." The middle-aged man showed a hateful expression when he mentioned the church.
"However, this did not bring much response. Without living under the blessing of a god and the alms of the Sanctums, not many cursed people could survive." Althur said.
The captain sighed and continued, "If you didn't want to go to the office, why not take on this case as well as come to Calico for a change of atmosphere? If you don't want an official position here, just accept the assignment; we will still pay the standard wage." After saying that, he paused for a moment and looked at Althur's bored face.
Althur tilted his head slightly, looked into the captain's dull eyes, and said softly, "I think it's you who need to change the atmosphere, Robert. Just leave this room."
The man turned, looked at Althur with a grotesque expression, raised his left hand, and there was a strange blue circle tattooed on his wrist. "I don't want to bother the farmers and camels too much."
"Of course, if you like me, you can come here more often. Sigh. After all, sometimes we just want someone to listen to our complaints quietly."
Althur's eyes seemed to lose their light, but his pupils trembled slightly. He looked back at the man in front of him, then pondered. After a while, he raised his head and looked directly into the black eyes of the other. "Okay, it looks like I really need to go somewhere."
The captain felt relieved. "Please drop by tomorrow and prepare your schedule. I will sign up for the mission and prepare some files for you."
"Don't act on your own. If you feel the danger is beyond your limits, first cooperate with the bishop in charge of that area."
Because of these two religious forces, O.S.P.I.S. has to tread carefully. They see us as a gathering place for people who call themselves exorcists and are ready to fight evil spirits, taking on most of the work of exorcists. Some people think that this is just a bunch of scoundrels trying to legitimize the process against their Gods, and stealing the job of exorcism is the first thing they do. And people often like to listen to different conspiracy theories. So, they often suffer from tacit repression from the sanctums.
"The city is seeing more demon-possessed people and evil spirits, and there are signs that the heretics are returning. The exorcists under our leadership have to work at full capacity. That is their request. And the superiors seem to be plotting something. But seriously, I am always locked in this room. Better to die on the battlefield than fight each of these papers."
He listened silently to the captain's laments about the boredom brought on by this terrible office job. He asked again, "Heretics?"
"Oh, my bad! We are heretics compared to them. I wonder, in the eyes of those lunatics, how we will be judged."
Althur smiled without comment. Because he recalled someone saying, 'The heresy of heresies was common sense.'
After finishing their conversation, Althur said goodbye to the captain and walked out of the building.
