THE FIFTH ELEMENT

Story written by AnnieBeck Title: THE FIFTH ELEMENT A thousand years ago, there was an ancient world that was ruled by gods and goddesses. But when it was time to go back into the heavens, these mighty beings bestowed some of their powers to four trusted mortals that served them. The four mortal men and women each received a different elemental power in order to keep the balance on this world. Azuu got the power of the fire element. Myra got the power of the water element. Zed got the power of the Air element. And Suri got the power of earth element. After the beings had disappeared into the sky, the four mortals lived in peace and harmony with each other and their families separately. As time went by, other people from far and nearby villages came to witness the power that was granted to these mere mortals like them. They were in awe. Some were envious while some were frightened. It was rare to see these kind of powers emit from a mortal. After several years of peace and harmony.... These special mortals gave birth to children of their own who also possessed these gifts. They knew that the mighty beings had given them gifts that would last for generations and they were thankful. When the children of these mortals grew up to adolescence, their parents each, started a lesson for them, teaching them ways they can control their abilities and become a great elemental.. As these children progressed in age, the son of the fire lord and the daughter of the lady of the water tribe fell for each other deeply. These two children grew up to love each other, however when their parents noticed what was going on between the two children, they had to put a stop to it , for they feared the outcome might be terrible and might befall on them all. They told each of them horrible stories of what might happen if they end up marrying each other but these two were headstrong and they continued with their love story. After some years... they children grew up into powerful adults and decided to marry each other. But this marriage was the beginning of Chaos. ** The newly married couple welcomed their first child, but this child had both fire and water elemental power. This brought about division among each of the elemental clan. The mortals couldn't allow anyone to posses more than one elemental power as it might bring inbalance to the world, so they had to sentence the innocent new born to death. The fire Lord told his son that the water tribe was responsible for the demise of the new born child in order to keep the children away from each other. The water tribe leader also told her daughter that the fire tribe was responsible for the demise of the new born child. This lie caused the hatred that spread around the fire clan and the water tribe.

MADELINE's POV

Before Cassie arrived, my mom always told me that there was someone with a fifth element not known to anyone and when I heard she was coming over here, I was delighted.

My Mom told me that I should always be ready to look out for her and be her friend.

She said that me being close to her would benefit me in the future. Even though I don't know how it would.

I always did whatever my mom asked of me just to get her to appreciate me more. And maybe even love me the way I want.

But I've come to accept the fact that I can never be enough for her. No matter how hard I try.

I've been trying to be a good friend to Cassie for my mom, but when I saw my mom hugging her, some part of me felt jealous.

My mom has never hugged me before.

I think Cassie noticed my mood change because she was giving me side eyes throughout the journey back to our dorm.

"Hey I noticed you've been quiet. Is everything ok with you?." she asked me when we got to our room.

I was getting ready for bed and I really didn't want to talk to her at the moment.

"I'm fine." I said to her.

"Are you sure? If something is bothering you, you can tell me." She said to me.

"I said I'm fine okay so just let it go." I said to her and put my earphone on. I didn't want to say any other thing before I end up being rude to her.

Once it was morning, I got up and got myself ready for school.

I looked over to Cassie's bed and saw her still sleeping soundly.

'Does she really not know it's morning.' I said in my mind.

I went over to the curtain and forcefully opened it up, hoping that the sound would wake her up. And successfully it did.

"Good morning sleepy head. Glad you finally decided to wake up. It's almost 8 O'clock, so you better get ready for school otherwise both of us would run late. And that would stain my reputation of being a punctual student." I said to her and give her a fake smile.

"Oh. Right. Sorry. I don't want to be a bad influence or anything like that."She said to me while rubbing her eyes.

"Good. Now get up already." I said to her.

"Alright alright. But are we good now though? You were kinda ignoring me last night." she said to me.

"We are great!. Let's leave the past in the past. Whatever I was feeling last night, is all over now." I said to her and smiled genuinely.

"Great. Ok I'll go get ready now." she said and went to the bathroom to freshen up.

CASSIE'S POV

I was glad Madeline was speaking to me normally again. I don't know what happened last night but I'm glad she's over it now.

Last thing I want is my roommate hating me.

When we got to today's class, I was surprised because the venue was at a large field.

Everyone was already gathered there.

The students on blue were standing together at a corner, chatting with each other.

The ones on grey were also together, but they were oddly quiet. None of them were talking. But they kept observing everyone else.

The ones on red were also together at a corner. They were talking to each other and some were giving the stink eye to the water students. I also noticed that I've never seen any fire student talk to a water student, And I wonder why.

Then lastly, the students on green, Which Madeline and I joined in were also present.

I felt like a stranger because of the normal clothes I was wearing. I felt left out In some way.

The teacher later joined us in the field after a few minutes. He was with two other people. But they were putting on all black with a leather jacket.

"Welcome students, I'm sure you all know what we'll be doing today." he said loudly and everyone started murmuring.

"Combat. You'll be learning how to use your elements to conjure up any weapon of your choice. And also learn how to use it for defense against your opponent." the teacher said.

They crowd seemed happy about it. Hence there were rumbles of excitement coming from each group.

"Hey, why does everyone seem so happy about fighting?" I asked Madeline over the noise

"We've all been waiting for a while to start combat skills. Previously they said we were too young but now we're older and need to learn how to defend ourselves." Madeline said to me, yelling it out loud for me to hear.

"Oh. But what exactly are you guys defending yourselves from? You all seem pretty powerful to me already." I said to her.

"Trust me Cassie, there is evil and danger outside the walls of this school. And there are also forces that are dangerous to us all. And we need to be able to defend ourselves whenever we might find ourselves caught up with those forces." Madeline said to me sounding serious.

A Part of me got scared on hearing what she had just said.

"Oh." was all I could reply.

"Now students I'll randomly pick people from each faction of elements for demonstration.... Let's start with the water element and the air element. You over there, come up here. And you as well. Come up to the center of the field." the teacher said and picked one person from the water side and one person from the air side.

The two students, a boy from the water element, and a girl from the air element, stood at the center of the field with the teacher.

"Now tell me, what are your names?" the teacher asked them both.

"I'm Theo." the water boy said.

"And I'm Phoebe." the air girl said.

"Okay. Theo and Phoebe. I want you both to conjure up a weapon. Any weapon of your choice. Just the first weapon that comes to your mind." the teacher said to them.

The two students held up their hands on mid Air and an image of an axe appeared on the water student's hand. While a spear appeared on the air student's hand.

But these were only mere images.

"Very good. Now I want you two to make it real. This is only a mirage of it, it won't really have any effect on someone else. I want you to turn it into a real weapon that can be used." the teacher said to them.

"How do we do that sir?" the air student asked him.

"Quite simple actually. You have to will It to happen. You have to manifest it into reality. Just breathe in and focus on it. Tell yourself that the weapon in front of you is real." the teacher said to them.

The two students were suddenly focused on their weapons. Probably hoping it would turn to a real one.

The air girl closed her eyes for some minutes and suddenly opened her eyes. Her eye colour changed to a glowing Whitish grey and she held out her hand to the weapon and got a firm hold of it.

Everyone suddenly started clapping and cheering for her.

"Good, very good. Nice job Phoebe. Hopefully you'll get it quicker next time. But great job regardless." the teacher said to her and patted her shoulder.

"Okay. That's enough Theo. You can go back to your group. I'll pick someone else for this." the teacher said to Theo and gently pushed him towards his fellow water students.

"Let's see.....How about You! I believe your name is Sage." the teacher said pointing towards sage.

"Yeah it is." Sage said while coming forward to the center of the field.

"Ok Sage. Let's see if you can get it done." the teacher said to her.

She smirked and raised her hands mid Air.

She quickly conjured her weapon which was a whip.

"Nice start. Now let's see if you can manifest it." the teacher said to her.

She closed her eyes quickly and took in a heavy breath. Next second her eyes flew open and the colour had changed to a glowing ocean blue colour. She held out her hand to the whip and held it firmly.

The whole crowd started cheering for her.

Even the teacher was impressed.

"Seems like you're a pro at this. That didn't take you up to a minute. It was very quick which is great, because during any form of encounter with an opponent, you need to be quick with making your weapon." the teacher said to her and gave her a pat on the shoulder.

"Now you two, I want you to put your weapons to use. Show me the best you've got." the teacher said and gave them some space.

"Hey, hope you're good at taking in pain, cause am about to hurt you pretty good. " sage said to the air girl.

"Don't be too cocky. You have no idea what I can do." Phoebe replied to her.

Honestly, i was rooting for Phoebe. I didn't know her but she seemed like a nice person already.

Sage on the other hand, is not nice thanks to our previous encounter.
