"What are you?"
His furrowed brow and quizzical gaze revealed the intensity of his concentration, as he observed her,in an attempt to decipher the puzzle unfolding before him. "You are definitely not a vampire nor a werewolf" trailing his eyes on her skin, " I doubt if you are witch and clearly, you're not human, so what are you?"
"Of course I'm human" adjusting her spectacle
Xavier narrowed his eyes, "why are you so fond of lying?"
"I could ask you the same thing, why are you so fond of stealing?" He couldn't help but wondered how she think she had the nerve to question him, aside from his friends, few people had the audacity to hold still and not cowered when he speaks. He had notice this at first when he confronted her at the station.
"If you continue this rebellious attitude of yours, you will put your neck on the line. Not all vampires are as patient as I am" Xavier leaned back, tasking his brain to see if he could identify what she was.
There's no way she would let him know what was going on with her, which is why she needed to take the book from him as soon as possible.
"Take off your glasses?"
"No" moving far away from him to prevent him from taking it off.
"Ok" letting go of the issue, "tell me what you saw" referring to when she was out.
"I didn't see anything " she denied, "I often go into trance once in a while, it has nothing to do with the egg"
Xavier raised his brow in amusement, "I see you love playing hide-and-seek, then explain how you were able to see the door when others see a wall?"
"I'm not the only one who could see it, Lord Knox could and he's a vampire, shouldn't you be able to see it as well since you're of the same kind?" She retorted. Holding her ground on keeping her secret. Seraphine knew so little about what she is but she was familiar with how cruel each creature is. They can use whatever it is they think she is to their advantage, until she knew what exactly she was, there was no way she would tell anyone yet.
"All right then" Xavier decided to allow her think he had let go of the issue, wanting her to drop her guard, he gave her her book, "here's the book as promised"
She quickly took it, keeping it in the reticle as if he might change his mind and snatch it back. Why is he letting go of everything, perhaps he isn't curious enough as he thought, he really knows how to mind his business truly.
She brought up the pending issue of the memory loss, "I assume you have a plan with those" pointing at the things he took.
It thrilled Xavier to no end that the more he gets to know Seraphine, the more he discovers something new about her. Hunting has been one of the activities that thrill a vampire, their basic instinct to chase and hunt is an ecstacy to their body. He looked forward to savoring the special game of hide and seek Seraphine didn't know she was about to enter. He would do well to set a well planed trap, he would hunt her secret till she was left with none.
"In order to convince the Upper House that Lord Knox is the one behind the werewolves memory loss, we need to identify his partner"
Seraphine shivered, seeing the evil glint shone in his eyes, "how do we do that?"
"He will lead us to him" bringing out the shell again, "once he realised some things are missing, he would look for a safer place outside his house to keep it and where else would he keep it if not at his partner's place?"
She scoffed, "you could have just explained earlier instead of leaving me in the dark"
Xavier smirked, "it's no fun if there's no suspense"
"More like a panic attack. How do we know what he wants to use it for?"
"We could easily know that if you agree to look at the eggs one after the other" he titled his head towards her.
"I told you that has nothing to do with the egg" she returned with a clenched teeth.
"Relax, the Upper House has a truth serum which can be used to fish out the truth from him once he is caught"
"How do you know so much about the House? Are you a member because I heard when Lady Knox called you a Lord"
Met with silence again, she spoke, " we need to act fast before Francis is attacked."
Her mouth was hung open when she heard him say instead, "I'll call you when you're needed, have a good day Miss Patrick"
Dazed at his sudden dismissal, she realised the carriage had stopped in front of the shop, unable to form words.
"You're lucky I don't have flies in my carriage, they would have taken a nap in your mouth" Xavier smiled.
She slammed the door of the carriage as hard as she could after stepping out! How dare he think he can dismissed her as rudely as that!
Watching the small form of Seraphine got smaller as the carriage moved farther, Xavier drew his brows together, trying to piece some things in place. He knew if he wanted to involve the Upper House, then one of the members who is affected needed to raise the issue in the House.
He opened the flap which connected him to the coachman, "take me to the Weinroff pack.
***********
"Great, two vampires in a row!" Lady Weinroff exclaimed, she might be suspicious of the first but she was little bit fond of second. As someone who had a close relationship with Nickolai Orsini, she had watched Xavier grew from a babe to quite a remarkable man he had become.
Everyone knows the handsome vampire does not interfere in others affair, keep to himself and voices his opinion when necessary, not taking into account how it makes the other party feels. Despite his lackadaisical, cold and rude attitude, mothers hadn't relented in throwing their daughters at him.
"Pardon me for showing up unannounced but there's a pressing issue I'll like to discuss with you"
"I'm listening" curious to hear him.
"I think it's best you discuss the issue of the sudden memory loss within the werewolf community in the Upper House"
"And here I thought you don't put your fangs where it isn't wanted" Alpha Weinroff snorted, "how did you even know about it. If it was Francis, believe me, he won't be spared from being punished because he knows better than to discuss the pack's affair with others" she declared.
Xavier looked at the powerful woman who is in charge of thousands of wolves. He respected the woman a lot and he knew how strict she was, he believed her when she said Francis wouldn't be spared, "I can assure you that Francis has nothing to do with it, in fact he had been tight-lipped about it and I'm afraid that he's mostly likely in danger concerning the matter"
"What do you mean he's in danger? And how did you know about it if not from him?" Her Alpha tone was starting to emerge with the mention of one of her pack members being in danger.
"Someone I know stumbled upon what was causing the memory loss and to apprehend the person, it has to be the Upper House"
"For you to have suggest I involve the House means the assailants isn't one of our kinds, if I am to guess I would say it is one of yours" trying to calm her wolf from attacking Xavier just by the mere thought of his kind endangering them.
Xavier seemed even more relaxed, not intimidated by her wolf which looked mad, he trusted her to calm her down and if she was unable to, he wouldn't have a choice than to defend himself.
Alpha Weinroff took a deep breath, "I assume the person is no other than Lord Knox. I've known you since you were sucking your mother's breast, you don't interfere in people's affairs, why now?"
"Two of my managers whom I would like to keep working with are victims and so is my friend whom I like to see him live longer" leaving out the part of wanting to know Lord Knox's purpose.
"What did that someone stumble upon?"
"The Chronophages"
She nodded, the same thing Lord Witcharoft had seen, "all right then, tell me the next course of action after informing the House? How would you suggest we catch him?"
