Roadblock

It was a hard journey so far. Lots and lots of abandoned cars stood in our ways and sometimes we had to stop and push the cars away.

Currently, I was sitting in the car with Gale while Paul and Ellen in the trunk.

"Everything ok? Your body is alright?"

I got startled for a second as Gale isn't a talker. She prefers to nod rather than speak. Her sudden concern got me unprepared.

"I'm okay. My body is slowly getting better and in a few days, I should regain my top specs."

"That's good. You had one hell of an accident and if I may say it, we were sure that you won't make it."

"What can I say, I'm one tough bastard."

"That and the fact that you are sturdier than most teenagers I saw in my entire life."

After she said the last sentence, Gale didn't speak anymore. I was a gentleman so I decided to keep my mouth shut which gained me a thankful nod from Gale. She wasn't fond of speaking with people which led to her strange way of communication.

When we were 10 km away from Senoia, we saw a roadblock that seems impossible to pass through with a car.

Getting off of the car, Paul approaches me.

"These are military trucks that left the hospital before you woke up."

"I'm sorry."

"No need. It isn't your fault. Heck, something must have happened for them to abandon the vehicles here, and from what I saw some of the trucks are damage. This means, that the drivers were attacked by someone."

"Let's check the place, maybe we will find some clues."

Paul and I decided to check the place while the girls would protect the car and cover our asses in case of something unexpected

As we slowly made our way around the blockade, Paul pointed his rifle at something. When I looked at what he found, I was shocked. One military zombie was trying to eat an unconscious soldier. Seeing that we may have found a survivor, Paul quickly killed the zombie while I approached the unconscious soldier.

The first thing that I did when I was near him was to check the man if he had any bite wounds on his body. After five minutes of searching for any wound on the man's body, I was one hundred percent sure that he wasn't bitten by a zombie.

Seeing that the man was safe and unharmed, Paul looked at the soldier uniform and frowned.

I noticed his frown.

"Something wrong ?"

"Not really, but this guy wasn't from my unit, and now that I had a better look at the convoy, I can see that there are some new vehicles amongst the ones that I know."

"Maybe they meet another unit and decided to head together to the refugee camp?"

"That should be the case."

"What should we do with him?"

"We should take him to the girls to check him. He will be in good hands there. They should be a better wake-up committee than two guys that looked rather intimidating."

I took one arm while Paul took the other one and start dragging the man towards our car. When the girls saw us dragging a man, they come and help us. After we put the man in the trunk, we explained how we found him and the fact that I already search him for any bite wound.

After we dropped the man and we got the green light to return to our job, we left the girls and once again begin to search the area for any zombies.

We found dead bodies as we searched through vehicles, but no zombie other than that one that Paul killed.

In one Humvee, we found a ballistic shield. Now that was a good find I may say. Seeing that Paul didn't want to use a shield as it was impractical for him, I decided to use it instead. The shield was rather heavy and hard to use at first, but as I searched through cars, I begin to get used to its weight. With a shield in one hand and an ax in the other one, I can proudly say that I'm a modern Viking.

Unfortunately, we didn't find anything in the cars other than two mags and one box of rifle ammo.

As we head back to our car, we saw that the soldier had waked up and was speaking with the girls. When we arrived at the car, the man got up and walked in front of us. He was a black middle-aged man with a buff build for his body type. His height was rather average if I may point it, I say that he was 1.7 meters. He looked like one of the spec ops soldiers that would eat you up if you make a mistake.

"Thank you for saving my sorry ass from an infected. Name's Jonathan Redwood or Jon as most of the people I know calls me."

"We are glad that you are ok. If we didn't found you in time, that zombie would have eaten you."

"Ouch, thanks again mate."

"So, Jon where is everyone?"

"Dead, at least the people that remain in the warehouse. When he found that the civilians were infected, we already lost half of our men and our Lieutenant decided to bring both of our units to the warehouse to guard and protect the civilians from any infected that may sneak through. At first, the situation was ok, we had food and water, but on the fourth day, people began to die from wounds. After one more day, we remain just 6 people. When we decided to scavenge for some supplies, we met a big group of infected. I swear to god that in that group were at least 50 infected. We stood no chance, so we decided to retreat. Unfortunately for us, we met another group, a smaller one, but still a threat. We tried to fight through them, we succeed, but only I and Kara survived, before we could rest, the infected were already behind us so we had to run. We got separated and while I was running, I didn't notice one body on the ground which made me lose my balance and hit my head and that's how you guys found me."

"I'm sorry. I know how it is to lose your unit."

"Thanks, mate."

"As much as I hate to stop people from talking, I had to do it now. We need to make a path for our car to go through." Said Ellen looking quite worried

"Can't do. The trucks are too damaged to start and I don't think we can push a truck. Though, we may have a shot in using a Humvee if we are lucky enough to find one that works.

"There's one that works, It's between two trucks, it would be a pain the ass to get out of there, but would have a car. Of course, if you guys accept me in your group."

"Welcome aboard big guy."
