The Dying Light

The first Cultivator rose from the masses now nearly a thousand years ago after solving Quantum Field Theory and harnessing the energy from other Dimensions. Immediately after his ascension he made break throughs in most every field including medical, allowing Humans to release the cells in their body from aging, allowing people to live naturally and healthily to the age 600. The first never shared the secret of how he solved the problem, and no one else could solve it either. When asked to share the secret, he said this: 'Knowing would only cause you harm if you cannot figure it out yourself.' Immediately after his ascension, the first Cultivator began refining the Sun. From it, he made Humanity's Second home. A Virtual World that can house many minds, an Artificial Reality Known as the Sol World. He allowed people to explore that world, to improve their chances of comprehending the world. Over time, people came to understand what he had meant. At this time, he also released another piece of knowledge. What the expansion of the Universe truly meant, the imminent events in the Superstrata of the Multiverse and the flows of energy through Dimensions of black holes. The world, and even the universe, were bound to die of natural causes. However, they were unwilling. And so, a race for Humanity to gain the power to fight the natural way began.

"Fuck off!"

I said that line calmly and turned my back to let him stew on it.

Nothing angers this type of person more than being insulted or ignored, so why not throw both in to get him as agitated as possible. These sort of privileged people are overwhelmingly childish.

Though it's just a snap judgement, but this sort of person would almost definitely take advantage of others as much as possible, and if they couldn't, then they would do so through a simple backstabbing and theft scenario.

It is a matter of whether the falling out happens now or later, and I would prefer for it to happen now. I couldn't stand to put up with the guy anyways.

He already stated that he was a Dragonoid, so as a beginner, all he should have is that bit of body strengthening, right?

I'm almost certain he'd try to take advantage of my back being turned. After all, who would pass up an open target? And that would be my chance.

Of course, if he is reasonable and truly fucks off, then that is just fine too.

That's unlikely though.

He isn't going to be thinking about the fact that I literally have eyes on the back of my head.

He will arrogantly think I'm trying to show a tough front (or back in this case), and think he has the advantage. Then, he will try to quickly kill or subdue me, either consciously or by impulse.

..

Not long after I had turned and started walking, I could feel him moving behind me. Then I began to sense him moving towards me and gaining speed rapidly.

A moment later I can hear his movement, I turn my head and pretend to have just noticed he was chasing me, and I begin to pretend as though I'm starting to run away. I start weaving through some of the trees to try and make him unstable and lose sight of me occasionally.

Then, I run across a somewhat more open patch I can make sure he is in my sights and can build some more speed.

The instant he reaches roughly 5 meters away, I pretend to have tripped. I move my spear as if I am going to catch myself with it, turning as I fall.

'Oh no~'

The other party is already moving towards me at the speed a car typically traverses a highway.

With the strengthening of a Dragonoid's body, these speeds are just the beginning, and his hands could easily pierce through my body or smash apart my head.

At the one meter distance I pushed the handle of the spear firmly into the ground, pointing towards myself, pointing towards him, and quickly shuffled my feet to jump out of the way.

At the same instant I moved out of the way the other party did not even have the time to shift his momentum and change paths.

The result: The Dragonoid's great speed, which lacked in any assortment of control, carried him right over and caused him to be impaled by the Spear.

Laying on my back I look up at the sight of him impaled on my spear and my mind went blank as time seemed to freeze.

Then, time started moving again.

His momentum continued to carry him forward even after he got stuck by the spear. He flipped over and smashed into the ground right beside me before he flew out behind me carrying my spear in his gut with him.

I looked behind me and saw the remnants of his broken body.

His neck had snapped from the intense and awkward impact from when he hit the ground. His body lay crumpled up under the tree he had collided with.

At the site blood was still spurting from his mouth and my spear was still driven through him.

In his eyes I could see the intense fear and disbelief lingering in the eyes of his corpse.

There was a numbing feeling in the back of my mind, the feeling that I had just murdered someone.

At that instant, his body dispersed, and his clothes dropped to the ground.

I shook my head and remembered that this was a Virtual World.

The guy didn't actually die, but the experience akin to death would teach him something.

I walked over and picked his clothes up, leaving only the underwear behind on the ground. If someone found it later and wanted it.. power to em' but I won't stoop that low.

A person's starter clothes were always made with above average materials and could act as a low-grade armor, another of the perks a starter gets. It is the most valuable drop you can get from a starter as well, or in the case of a complete newbie like this guy or myself, it should be the only drop.

Albeit it is a bit merciless to murder someone you just met and then take the clothes off your body.. it is a Virtual world after all, and he started it.. When that guy is able to get back into Sol, at least he might have something to wear still.

After that experience I realized I need a way to fight with at least a bit of range between myself and the opponent for now. In the starter area, when two people encounter one another, there is usually a fight.

There are a total of 25 isolated starter areas on the Sol World, and on any given day about 500,000 new people joining Sol world. Each starter area has roughly equal influx meaning about 20,000 people spawn in a starter area each day.

Any given person may only stay in the starter area for the first 31 days of their adaptation period, in the latter 31 days one would have to start making their way in the beginner's area.

The starter region has a much higher proportion of resources than the beginner area which surrounds it. In this area, people battle it out constantly over resources. The intense fighting forces the new people to quickly adapt to their chosen abilities, those who do not may die repeatedly and constantly be left behind.

The surface of each starter area spans around 1,000,000 square kilometers and

around 200,000-620,000 people could be found in a starter area at a given time (varying due to deaths and those who leave early).

At times it could take running for a couple of kilometers to encounter even a single person, at others there could be large groups of people flocking to the same location over treasured resources. One could say that in a starter region, the most important thing above all was personal strength, the second was allies.

If your strength is too low, and you were also unpopular, then you could only try and make your way towards the edge of the starter area to leave early and enter the beginner's area.

The beginner area immediately outside of the starter area, has a deliberate low spread of resources. That way stronger first layer fighters do not feel tempted to push around the new people and everyone has a chance through slow accumulation and a low profile, even if they struggled in the beginning.

However, if one were to linger in that area for too long they would lose out on many opportunities.

Raising your combat capabilities and amassing resources in the starter area is extremely important and often considered as a measure of how far a person would make it in the future. Fighting one vs many is a high likelihood when one travels alone, but there are still plenty of skilled fighters who can even outmatch large groups in their early stages.

To face off one against many nothing could be lacking, close range, long range, mobility, tactics, a fighter must have all of these to force their way to the top of this food chain.

Shamed to say, my long range and mobility are quite lacking and only my close range and tactics are somewhat decent. I know from past experience that I am no good with something like a bow and arrow. With guns I am fine, but aside from that I am unafraid to admit I lack the talent for most long range attacks.

So instead, something like a Mage-Weave Scarf would probably be better. A scarf would also make it much easier to navigate around, and could also act as light armor. It could make up for my current faults if I could make and cultivate a good one.

Lucky me, I happen to have tactically acquired some high quality fabric which could be used to make such a scarf.

While I could also make one out of plants, the amount of energy and time it would take would be staggeringly more than using these spoils of war.

I checked my surroundings before settling in some foliage for concealment to focus on my work.

I tapped into my picobot reserves, altering the interface and entering the appropriate commands for a basic mage scarf, something I had researched well before coming. Pulling on and exhausting my Manufacturing bot reserves, I re-made his clothes into a thin cloth scarf with the picobots weaved thickly into the fabric.

The finished cloth scarf was quite soft to the touch. It was able to slightly expand and contract throughout the body of the scarf so long as the appropriate mental energy was applied to it.

I grabbed the end of the scarf and sent a signal through it, then snapped it out like a whip towards the nearest tree. It moved swiftly through the air and scraped a bit of bark off of the tree, before snapping back and curling gently and smartly around my arm like a snake.

I snapped it out again towards a large branch in the upper canopy and it curled up around the branch.

I pulled back on it, and with an intent, it contracted and pulled me up into the air.

When my feet came off the ground and I felt the wind passing by me. I looked down and around at the trees and the ground in an instant before realizing just how high this small experimental move had taken me.

I felt half excited and half anxious at the height this move had given me, when I reached the fullest extent of my arc on the branch, the scarf released it's grip on the branch.

My feeling of excitement was gone.

How the hell do I not die right now?

Although one would not feel the complete pain of death on Sol, it would be close to it. Not something you would want to happen often, or at all, if it could be helped.

I looked over the branches splayed out in my path.

'If I do another horizontal branch, I might mess up and go even faster, then it would be even worse..'

I whipped out my scarf towards one of the branches facing out towards me on one of the trees and it quickly contracted tightly around it.

I pulled off slightly to the side, trying to throw my arc a bit more off-kilter.

'Was this an even dumber idea?'

I quickly closed in, and the change to my trajectory made me pass close by the side of the tree.

My scarf hit against another branch and I was suddenly swung upwards and found myself upside down. I shifted my weight slightly and kicked against the tree's trunk, finally managing to face plant onto the large branch just below me and stop the insanity that was 3-D movement with a mage scarf.

I picked out the mage scarf because one of my favorite games as a kid featured an arcane mage with a similar scarf. The dynamics of the game were amazing, you could weave through vast and breathtaking landscapes in an instant and swoop down on enemies, assassinating them with an arcane blade without them ever knowing what happened.

The storyline was also amazing, one where the hero gradually gained power and fought in the shadows against an enemy with far greater power, an organization the hero eventually came to know as the Arcane Vigilants, who hunted down the people of the Hero's race due to a fear of their innate Arcane abilities.

So many great arcs, the savage moment where the Vigilants slaughtered his village. The moment where he finally tracked down the Officer of the shadowy organization and learned their name at the end of the first game and had his revenge.

Tracking down and rescuing his people in the second game and building an organization to fight back against them.

Engaging in an interplanetary war and facing off against the peak fighters of the organization in the third game, finally defeating them!

And then the games after that which seemed somewhat reptitive...

...it is way more difficult to do 3d movements in virtual reality when compared to those video games. Even with the enhanced senses and reaction times. That was just a console game, doing those actions on a button press.

However, that game was one of a series of games based off of reality simulations, given the right conditions, such a situation could be a reality somewhere in the vast expanse of existence.

Everything within the game was achievable through arcane cultivation methods, and the movements in the game were real combat techniques. However, similar to other games on a screen, even if you see a character using a real technique that does no mean you can pick up the subtleties of muscle development and energy manipulation techniques required to perform it.

Personally, I was also far too poor to afford anyone who can teach me these things or even an instruction manual...

So, I could only rely on techniques I know are realistically achievable and hope to learn them through trial and error.

A sigh escaped my mouth, how long would it take to get to the level of that nameless hero in the game..

I took a deep breath for a moment while I was up on the branch, then looked around.

The Trees in my surroundings all seemed to reach for the skies. Their branches, at my height were all thick enough to sit on comfortably, if not thick enough to lay across for some of the larger ones.

I sat down and leaned against the Trunk of the tree for a moment to breathe in the fresh air.

Three dimensional movement is the Standard for most modern combat. Adjusting to abnormal circumstances, difficult gravitational and planar laws, anything can happen once you are in the field. Especially if you are a part of troops exploring new spatial or dimensional regions! And the only way to learn and prepare is obviously.. practice!

And so, I kept on practicing for a few hours, as I was finally starting to get the 'hang' of it, I heard a loud roar and some shouting off in the distance.

Despite my clumsy movements, the trees are so sturdy that my movement through them was virtually soundless. It was perfect for getting the jump on others, so long as they don't move so that I can catch up...
