Chapter 3

The golden rays of the sun slowly made their way towards the sleeping city of Redwood and bathed it in its light. The streets started to be filled again with people, both residents and travelers alike. Hawkers could be heard calling for customers and the gates were again crowded with people wanting to enter.

Through the open window of the room, sunlight entered and lightened up the space. The sound of water flowing filled the silence. With a 'clank' the doors to the bathroom opened. Out came Emery fully dressed and refreshed to start her day. Making her way towards the table she picked up a bag and walked towards the door.

The atmosphere downstairs was just as lively as yesterday. Even this early in the morning Emery could see a couple of people passed out drunk. They were most probably customers who never left last night. The rest of the crowd consisted of adventurers and travelers. Most of them looked refreshed for a new day while others had bags under their eyes as a sign of them having just entered the city after a long night of traveling or downing quests. They were helping themselves to alcohol and some food.

Emery herself was hungry so she made her way towards an empty table and ordered some food. While waiting a couple of conversations caught her attention. The adventurers and travelers were talking about their most recent activities. Most of it was just them boasting about themselves but there was still a lot of useful information and drama. Lots and lots of drama.

As Emery treated herself to her own way of entertainment. A waiter came back with her food. Thanking them she started to eat. After a hearty breakfast, Emery made her way towards the inn doors and onto the streets. Her destination? The guild hall.

..............

Inside a large building situated in the center circle of the city, groups of adventurers could be seen exiting and entering the building. Their loud chatter almost over powered the sounds coming from the market district.

Emery, looking around, made her way towards the building. The guild was especially crowded during this time. A lot of requesters come and the recruits make a line to join most this time of the day. By now Emery had been out for a couple of hours now. While her final destination was the Guild Hall she also had other businesses to attend to. One of them involved having to go around the entire market district to buy gifts for people. It was already midday when she finally got to the guild hall.

As Emery finished climbing the few stairs and walked into the hall four things entered her vision. The counter, the notice board, the bar and the stairs. The ground floor of the hall only contained these few things but even then it felt like the place was always overflowing with people. There was always an endless stream of them coming in and going out.

The atmosphere of the hall was lively as always. There was a rough batch of adventurers at the bar, drinking away their earns while another batch was standing in front of the notice board to see what quests they could take. The line In Front of the counter was filled with people from all backgrounds. Requesters, adventurers selecting or completing a quests, recruits, and others. A bunch of people could be seen climbing the stairs either to rest at the lounge above or to request quests with high payments.

Examining the place Emery walked towards the notice board and placed her eyes on all of the various quests that were up for choosing. Each notice had a short description of what was to be done, the payment, the level of adventurer requested and the time frame if there was any.

Emery started to read through all the quests that were available for her level until one finally caught her eye. It was a c level quest requesting for an escort for a merchant who was to travel to Scarlet haze. The payment was good and the job was not too hard with 5 members.

After Emery was done choosing she made her way towards the counter and stood in line as she waited for her turn. It didn't take long before she was called for. A beastman greeted her at the counter. Emery looked at them and smiled as she handed them the quest details that she was willing to take. The beastman nodded and asked to see her badge before they started the procedure. Emery handed her the badge and the beastman was a little surprised to see a golden Level B badge. But the surprise didn't last long before the beastman started the procedure. It didn't take long before Emery was on her way towards the meeting spot.

While walking Emery remembered the beastman's small moment of surprise which was expected. The levels of adventurers were divided into F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS and SSS. While these were the main classifications there were also sub classifications like B bronze, B silver, B gold, A bronze, A silver, A gold, S-, S+, SS-, SS+, SSS- and SSS+. Although the ranks after A gold were no longer in use. In the current generation there were only adventurers up till the A gold. Anything S were just decorations now. They were added to the Guild Ranking System a few generations ago when the Great outbreak happened. It was a very destructive time in history.
