Saving Emma from government persecution, Sophie goes on the run with her. Meanwhile, Erik Persson, a police officer, sets out to track Sophie and Emma, while suspecting that a mole might be hiding in the ranks of the police. Sophie and Emma hide in the slums and after almost getting caught by the police several times they finally fall in the hands of the rebels; in her captivity, Sophie discovers that the plague survivors are not as irrational and violent as the press portrays them and agrees to work with them to develop a vaccine. She also discovers that some of the survivors have the ability to communicate telepathically with a dragon. She meets the General, the leader of the rebels, whose name is Cain, and despite her fear for his terrifying looks and enigmatic personality, she is strangely attracted to him.

Chapter 55

After Cain’s accident, Sophie doubted for a long time whether it was appropriate or not to tell Nadia about it. After all, she was involved in an indirect way, as one of the dragons that could have attacked Cain was her own. There was definitely something fishy about that whole business, and Sophie would have been sorry if anything happened to her friend or the little dragon.

However, there was the issue of confidentiality: she didn’t like the idea of talking to Nadia about something that she was explicitly asked to keep secret. And in any case, she was uncomfortable at the idea of violating the privacy of a patient. That had always been one of her red lines. So in the end she decided to say nothing.

She had tried to talk to James, but these days he was distracted, and she realized that he was not listening at all.

“Sorry, Sophie, but I have other matters to think about now,” he said abruptly.
