Chapter 20: Homecoming

Dominik comes to stand next to me and smiles, wrapping his hand around mine. “Remember,” he says, leaning close to whisper in my ear, “you promised to come back with me.”

“I will,” I say. My heart is pounding in my chest, and a smile is tugging at the corners of my mouth.

While we stand there, someone passing by looks over. They blink rapidly, and then their mouth falls open. “Kaleigh?” they yell, running over to me. “My god, Kaleigh! You’re alive!”

“Yes!” I say, releasing Dominik’s hand as this woman grabs my own.

“How? If you’re here, then the dragon king—”

“He was slain,” Dominik says, interrupting her fears. “I was traversing through the woods when I found his lair. I rescued Kaleigh and have been taking care of her since I found her.”

I raise my eyebrows, looking at him in surprise. He really did plan everything, I think to myself. The woman grins and pulls at me, dragging me into the town.
