Chapter 33: The Vow

MALIA POV

Malia sat in the hallway with her back against the wall. The stone felt hard, cold, and uncomfortable against her body. Both guards stared at her—one grinning, one making cheesy kissy faces. What was it about some men who honestly believed that crap would work? Encountering it here, on Aeonia, proved that idiocy transcended cultures.

Lucie reprimanded the men and told them to focus on their jobs. It seemed to Malia that there was a lot of that going on lately: shelving romance for the duty of work, and she warmed to the men’s loveless plight until the smoochy one rolled his eyes at Lucie and flicked his tongue at Malia, grossing her out. Malia ran her finger across her tongue and mocked spitting, shutting the guys up. A stale silence followed.

Malia was not actively listening for Charles, but still, she expected to hear Chloe’s moans drift through the door at any moment.
