As Seraphine and I were beginning to drift off into a peaceful sleep, a loud crash jolted us both upright. The door to our room flew open with such force it nearly splintered off its hinges. My heart leapt into my throat, and I clutched the sheets, blinking in shock.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the flickering lantern light, was Leora, Seraphine's grandmother. Her fiery red hair cascaded down her back, and her vivid purple eyes practically glowed with fury.
Despite her youthful appearance thanks to the mark of Zephara that kept her from aging quickly there was no mistaking the storm brewing in her expression.
