The Day That is Yet to Be

Sebastian Clouse, a 23-year-old well-known genius and extraordinaire, grew up in a world of good fortune and raised by his loving mother, Elizabeth Clouse, who was part of his life and never left his side, even during the hardest times. His father, Victor Clouse, who is a world-famous businessman who created a lot of inventions, focused mostly on his work than his own family. Everything Sebastian has ever wanted was achieved by not only hard work, but from his gift. He has an ability called technomancy, which allows him to create and manipulate electronics, devices, and anything robotic with the touch of his hand. Everything and anything that he wanted was given to him by his parents, who loved him so much, but feared him with the same extent. When he was only thirteen, they believed his power would be used to create a world that he alone can control and manipulate whoever he sees as a threat to him and his families’ business. So as a failsafe, his own parents had no choice but to try and limit his powers before it would get out of control. With the most heartbreaking choice they had decided on, it led to the most heartbreaking outcome. One dreadful night and not being able to use his powers, Sebastian was coming home with his mother in their car when a drunk driver crashed into them at an intersection. Sebastian’s arm was severely pinned and had no ways to escape. His mother, with every ounce of will and strength she had left, saved her son but at the cost of her own. The car exploded as Sebastian was being dragged out by nearby pedestrians and was rushed to the hospital. His father, caught up in a meeting was later notified of the tragedy, arrived at the hospital too late. Sebastian, with now an amputated artificial left arm, lost his mother, and now shunned by his father, blames the world of his mother’s death. So, he swears to himself, until the day he dies, to create a world where no one will go through the pain he has experienced….

Sebastian storms off towards the elevator holding onto his wrists that were being held down by the robots. He stops and looks at all the paintings and photos on the wall again and starts knocking them down in anger. He was fed up with his father casting him to the side like nothing has happened. Sebastian leans against the wall underneath his mother's painting of herself and starts to slowly fall on the floor. Rebecca comes from the dining room after cleaning most of the mess and walks down the hall. She sees Sebastian sitting by himself as she walks to him.

"May I join you?"

He did not raise his head or respond to her question, but she continued to walk to him and kneel beside him.

"Sebastian, I know you were trying to look out for me and I know I am here to serve both of you, but you don't have to defend me with something minor like that. It's something that I don't mind doing and it never bothered me in the slightest."

He raises his head a bit showing his face to Rebecca as a tear was going down the side of his face. He quickly wipes it away trying to not show any sign of weakness in front of her.

"I have no problem with you doing things for my father or for me, but I wouldn't have you get something as minor as a suit. Unlike my father, I am the kind of person who would be out there doing everything in my power to get what I want."

Rebecca looks at him with a sad expression.

"Even if it means to hurt others along the way?"

He looks at her confused and lost in thought towards the question. He shook his head and took her hands and holds them with his.

"I would not hurt anyone as long as they can see what I am doing is what's best for them, I wouldn't take away something that makes a person who they are, and I wouldn't kill anyone."

"I don't think that's the problem, even though I understand what you are trying to say. What your parents did to you was completely wrong, but you must understand why they did it."

He lets her hands go and stands up while walking to the elevator again. She gets up after him and follows beside of him.

"Whatever reason they had, wasn't worth it in the end now was it?"

Rebecca stopped in her tracks thinking to herself on the answer to that question. Confused and not knowing the true reason as to why Sebastian's parents took his powers away, Rebecca takes a deep breathe and placed her hands in front of her chest.

"Maybe it has something to do with love Sebastian. Love can make a person do things for someone that they know for sure it might cause pain not just to you, but towards themselves as well. They love you so much that they probably wanted to make sure you were going down the right path. A path that has you seeing a brighter future."

Sebastian listened to her but was not paying attention as he stops in front of the elevator and presses the button. The door opens and he walks inside and turns around facing Rebecca.

"The thing that bothers me the most Rebecca isn't because they had a reason to do it, but they did it without talking to me about it. It is my power and my body at the end of the day. Whenever I look down from my balcony at the people walking by, I think about which one of them is going to see tomorrow and which of them are not. It may sound depressing to some people, but for me it is just a way for me to do something about it."

She looks at him and walks in front of the elevator confused.

"What do you mean by that? What are you thinking of doing to help everyone in the city?"

Sebastian chuckles and puts a finger in front of his lip and makes a shushing sound.

"You will know one day sooner or later Rebecca, but I will need to know if you will be on my side or not first."

The elevator door started to close as Rebecca steps back a bit. She started to gently rub her arms as she felt a shiver down her back listening to Sebastian's words. She could not help but worry for Sebastian's safety and well-being. Rebecca walks back down the hallway looking down and thinking about what Sebastian had said to her.

"What did he mean by that? Just a way to do something about it. What are you trying to do Sebastian…?"

As she walks down the hall deep in thought, she did not focus on where she was stepping and tripped over a picture frame that was still on the ground when Sebastian knocked it down. She rubs her leg while looking back at the picture to see if there was any damage to it. When she reaches for the picture frame to pick it up, something fell from inside of the frame itself. It sounded like a piece of metal that hit the floor. Rebecca looks down and sees a silver key laying on the floor beside her feet. She reaches down and picks it up examining it carefully. The key appeared to be old and dusty. The silver coloring on the key itself was faded, like it was hidden for more than a decade. She quickly tucks the key into her dress pocket and started to clean up the broken picture frames and placed the others back onto the wall.

Rebecca starts walking back down the hall and towards Victor's workshop with the key in her hand. Inside of the workshop, Victor paces back and forth as small robots and drones flew around the room carrying tools and parts.

"Put that there and be careful, we need to make sure this project is finished before the deadline."

The small robots dashed, ducked, and collided into one another causing a huge ruckus around the entire workshop. Victor sighed and rubs the side of his head with his fingertips. Rebecca walks into the room seeing all the mayhem and inorganization as she steps over wires and tubes that are scattered across the floor.

"Um, Master Victor, is everything okay?"

"Oh Rebecca, everything is fine, I am just finishing up this project that the company is pushing forward within a few days. I just need to focus on a few more things now."

"Right, well I'm sorry for bothering you but I - "

Just when Rebecca was going to mention about the key, Victor gets a phone call on his watch.

"What? You found it?! I'll be over there now!"

He hangs up the call and jumps for joy as he runs to grab his coat off his chair.

"I apologize Rebecca, but this is urgent. I must leave right now to meet with someone. Whatever Sebastian sent you down here for I do not care. This right now is more important than him."

Victor runs past Rebecca and heads out of the room, leaving her speechless and confused. She stands there looking at the key in her hand wondering what is going on and if she should say anything.

"More important than family?"

She puts the key back into her pocket and walks out of the room and heads to bed for the night.

Victor quickly heads up to the roof of his building and gets inside of his helicopter, where a robotic pilot waits on standby. The pilot activates and turns around towards him.

"Destination please."

"To the offshore testing facility number four now."

The robot's eyes flickers and activates the helicopter. They flew up into the sky and takes off towards the station. Victor reaches for his watch and starts a video call again. He gets an answer and broadcasts it in front of him. An older man that appeared to be in his sixties with gray hair and glasses was on the other side of the screen.

"Did you hear of the news Victor? This is a huge steppingstone for your company."

"Yes, I have and with it, I can finally achieve my long-lasting goal. If only my wife was here to see our work pay off in the end."

"She would be proud; I am sure of it. What about your son? Did you tell him the news?"

Victor looks out of the helicopter's window looking down at the city.

"He hates me still to this day. I do not see him focusing on the company or me on that matter. All that matters now is that we move to phase two of my plan. I will arrive in five minutes. Make sure the board is on standby when I get there."

"I will whatever you need me to do for the good of the company and for an everlasting future for the entire world."

They both ended the video, and the helicopter continues to fly miles away from the city and over the large body of water. As soon as he knew they were out of the line of sight of the city, Victor presses a button on the side of his watch, and the helicopter begins to slow down and hover just above the ocean. He lifts a panel next to him and starts typing in a passcode. A few seconds later, a barrier opens in front of them and a huge platform became visible. The helicopter flies down slowly and lands while the barrier behind them closes. He gets out of the helicopter and is welcomed by a group of scientists.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let us begin with project Infinity."
