64 Hot Headed

The following days passed without anything too shabby happening besides Max being challenged to a battle by another trainer. They agreed for a quick one-on-one, both picking their best pokemon. Max's first choice was Bonny who was the third strongest fighter in the team, especially since she can mega-evolve, and also because she is usually the first one who wants to readily fight. Max's opponent picked a strong and fast breloom but was easily defeated by Bonny with just two Jump Kicks. Feeling flabbergasted and although he wasn't a sore loser, he wasn't happy about that defeat, not at all expecting to face such a strong opponent. As per the unwritten rule, the trainer gave Max a little money and left. The current day is coming to an end with dusk starting to settle, and the camp has just finished being settled.

"Thanks, Scarlet," Max said thankfully as soon as she was done installing everything.

{A pleasure as always.} Scarlet said with a smile.

In the meantime, the other girls were scattered around the campsite, doing whatever they felt like.

{Master?} May called out from behind him, tugging his pants.

"Yes?"

{Can we start trying to mega-evolve me?}

"Hem…"

{Please! Please, please, please!} She eagerly begged, getting overly excited already.

"I personally don't mind, May, but Aurora and I already planned on trying it every day."

{We can alternate.}

"...I guess," Max conceded with a shrug, looking at Scarlet.

{Don't look at me, you're the one in charge of that.}

{Yay!} May exclaimed happily. {Come on. Let's go.} She added, starting to pull him.

"Why are you in such a hurry?" he asked, grabbing the stone and proceeding to follow her.

{Good luck.} Scarlet wished while waving at them. {I'll get dinner ready in the meantime.}

With Max being practically dragged along by the small mawile, they walked past Aurora and Bonny who were just chilling and talking next to the campsite.

"Ready to try it again right now?" he asked the lucario with an innocent face and smile.

*sigh* {Coming.} Aurora answered, not feeling as enthusiastic as May.

{Have faith. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before you mega-evolve.} Bonny encouraged.

{If you say so.} The lucario replied, leaving her to follow the other two.

She knew Bonny meant well, but hearing that from someone who can already mega-evolve sounded a bit hollow to her. As she followed them, she couldn't help but be annoyed at May's exuberant enthusiasm but didn't say a thing since she couldn't blame her for being excited. Although she hated herself for it, she found herself wishing that the mawile would fail at mega-evolving, too. It's not that she wasn't happy for May, but the thought of the little mawile managing to mega-evolve before she did, would make her feel useless. For a moment, she pondered the thought of telling Max to just give up completely but dropped it since she more or less already knew her trainer's answer to her insecurity.

"Something wrong, Aurora?"

Exiting her thoughts and almost jumping, she saw Max looking at her from behind his back.

{Me? N-no, absolutely not.} Aurora lied.

"Why the long face, then?"

Unbeknownst to her, Aurora's feelings were reflected in her expressions.

{I'm okay, really.}

From the beginning of their relationship, Max learned that Aurora wasn't a very good liar.

"Alright, I won't force you."

Over time, Aurora also became aware of that weakness of hers, and despite her best efforts to stop it, she kept on doing it to avoid talking about personal matters.

{...Maybe I'll tell you after our session.} Aurora said hesitantly.

"Sure. I appreciate the trustworthiness."

A couple of steps later, they all came to a stop.

"This place looks good," Max stated while looking at the cleared zone, being only a small distance away from the camp.

{Alright, master, give me the stone!} May urged.

"Okay, okay. Here," Max replied, handing it to her.

{Alright, so you said that even though it's not refined, it should work, right?} May questioned, just to be sure.

"I don't see why it would not work."

{How can you affirm that?} Aurora asked, resenting her desire for May to fail.

"Well, why would it not? I mean, it's not like refining it unlocks its power. The power must be within the stone from the very start."

{...Sounds plausible.} Aurora simply replied, sitting close to them.

{Alright then. So I believe I have to touch the exposed part.} May said while pressing her tiny hand against the colorful raw mega stone. {I'm ready.}

"Let's go, then," Max said, doing the same with his key stone, closing his eyes, and started focusing.

{"Mega evolution!"} They both called out simultaneously.

They kept focusing a few more seconds before opening their eyes. Unfortunately, May was still in her normal form.

"Hm, it didn't work," Max commented.

{I can see that. Another time.}

"Alright."

They then did the same exact process, only to see another fail.

{...Maybe I have to use both of my hands.} May theorized before doing as she said.

Hoping it will work that time, Max repeated the process one more time. And again, unfortunately, another failed attempt.

{What the...? What's wrong with this stone?} May pondered loudly, starting to get upset.

"May, I think-"

{Another time.} She commanded. {This time, I have to focus more!}

Not wanting to scrap her hopes, Max touched his keystone once more.

(Mega evolve! Mega evolve! Mega evolve! Mega evolve!) She repeated in her head with closed eyes, pressing her hands harder on the mega stone.

After a few seconds of hoping and repeating the same words, she then opened her eyes.

{Are you kidding me?!} May exclaimed angrily. {Why isn't it working?}

"Maybe there-"

{I'm starting to believe this is not even my mega stone.}

"It has to be, we jus-"

{It's not because it's not working! This stupid rock is not mine, otherwise, I would have already mega-evolved by now, damnit!} She exclaimed in a tantrum and aggressively threw the stone away.

"May, calm down, please," Max calmly asked, not liking her sudden attitude.

{No. I want my mega stone now!} May childishly demanded.

"Either you calm down this instant, or else we stop here," he asserted with a glare.

{What?! But… you can't just... Aaargh!} She furiously yelled while turning around and heading towards a nearby tree, kicking a dead branch on the way.

{Wow. I've never seen her that upset.} Aurora commented, taken aback by her friend's behavior.

"I admit that neither have I," Max agreed, looking at the mawile who now sat at the foot of the large tree, crossing her arms and showing an intense angry expression like never before. "I'll wait for her to calm down and then we're gonna have a small conversation."

{Normally, I wouldn't recommend it, but May has always been the kind to be true to herself. She's aware of her mistakes and can easily live with them, so the talk shouldn't be too hard for her.}

"She has a very sweet, cheerful, and naive personality, but she can act a bit childish sometimes."

{Maybe her mind doesn't reflect her true age.}

"It's possible. With an abusive trainer like she had, it's hard to have a good personal development."

{Or maybe her Miss-Smile attitude hides something more painful.}

"It's a possibility too, but I highly doubt it. We would have seen some unorthodox behavior by now."

{Like in this moment?}

Unable to answer, Max looked at May one more time.

"Are you implying that she's not happy with us?"

{That, or she's just a bit much of a spoiled brat, and I don't say it mischievously. She's a very nice girl, overall.}

"Spoiled brat would be harsh, but maybe since she was denied a lot of things, if not everything by that asshole, a huge frustration was born inside her and is in conflict with her charming personality."

{Who knows? At this point, it seems that you know more about that than me.}

"Well, I believe I'll have to do my job as a trainer once again," he said, sitting next to her.

{...Personally, I think you're doing well.} Aurora shyly shared while discreetly putting a paw on one of his hands.

"Thanks," Max replied, petting her with his other hand. "But I'm not the only one here who deserves credit. You guys helped me evolve in my way in a rather short lapse of time."

{Which is quite admirable. None of us make it easy for you. You sure seem to have a thing for problematic females.} She remarked, lightly bumping him in the shoulder.

"Haha, maybe," Max lightly laughed. "Perhaps it's my… Nah, I was going to say my philanthropist side, but I'm not really into helping humans that much. I would use the same term but for pokemon, but I'm not even sure such a term exists."

{How about pokethropist?} Aurora suggested with a small warm smile.

"It sounds weird as fuck, but eh, we'll go with that," Max jested, making her smile even more. "And I gotta say, I love seeing your smile."

{Rha! You didn't have to ruin the moment, though.} Aurora complained, shyly looking away with a blush.

"Hehe, sorry," he apologized, stroking her soft hair between her long and pretty ears. "Now, care to tell me what's bugging you?"

With her smile fading, she moved her paw away and looked a bit sad all of a sudden.

{...I'm… not proud of myself.}

"Don't be ashamed. We all have those moments in our lives. I'm sure that even the sexy and prideful Bonny also has moments like that. Who knows? Maybe even Luna."

Aurora looked at Max intently, almost like she was wishing he would guess on his own what was troubling her.

{...Would you… hate me if I were to say that I wish for the failure of someone?} She started, looking away from his glance.

"Someone? If you're asking that, I doubt you're talking about a complete stranger. How close are you to that someone?"

{Let's say… a friend.}

She turned to look at Max one more time and quickly got nervous when he didn't answer immediately.

"I would never hate you, Aurora, even for that. However, I would like to know why and how I can help you with that."

{...Honestly, I'm really happy for May for obtaining her mega stone, but… if she mega-evolves before me, even after how much time and effort we spent on me, that would be so unfair and very frustrating.}

"...You know, I got that kind of feeling when I lost my mother. And to this day, I still have some remnants of that. And I'm not talking about how envious I was with those at school that had everything that I didn't," Max narrated, oddly with a smile.

{How come you can say that with a smile, then?}

"Easy question. All of that doesn't matter and it doesn't compare to how lucky I am right now. Some of those I was envious of became poor bastards while I'm on a thrilling adventure with seven marvelous creatures."

{I'm… not sure I understand your point.}

"What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter if you are the first or the last one to mega-evolve. In the end, you might even become the strongest pokemon of the team."

{The strongest? Tss, no exaggeration here. I'm sure you didn't include Scarlet and Luna in the equation.} Aurora remarked with playful sarcasm.

"Oh, yes I did, don't worry about that."

{I guess you have faith in both of us, then, because it's hard for me to believe that I could come close to match them with the plethora of failures I have.}

"And what are those failures you speak of? Are you talking about the jerk that abandoned you? About leaving the dojo? About what exactly?"

{Well… mainly being ditched by an asshole.}

"You just contradicted yourself in the same sentence. How is being left behind by the worst asshole ever a failure? To me, it's a win. Firstly because he would have just done it eventually; and secondly, you wouldn't be here with us. With me," he pointed out with a reassuring smile.

{I… Maybe. But how about the many battles I lost in my time at the dojo and after that?}

"...Alright, I won't lie to you and say that those are indeed failures."

{Ah, you see?} Aurora said matter-of-factly.

"But isn't that what the concept of training is about? Being bested by others and getting better for next time? If I were to fight that dojo's grandmaster, he would break me in seconds. However, even though it would be a failure, I would be okay with that. Why, you ask? Because I would have no chance from the very start and I'm aware of that."

{I'm not sure I follow.}

"Yeah, I didn't go in the right direction with that example... What I meant to say, is that failure is the first step before winning. You can't be born with all the talents and skills in the world. You have to choose and specialize in what you want and work hard to come out on top. It's mathematical: effort and work plus time equal a better chance at winning. In short, don't let failure stop you. You never know where perseverance could lead you."

{Judging from your reaction when you lost for the first time against the last gym leader, you don't take failure very well yourself.}

"Hehe, it's true. I would be lying to you if I said I don't mind losing. However, I didn't stop there thanks to Scarlet and all of you. Two weeks later, we faced her again with more training and preparation, and then we finally won."

Unable to reply, Aurora stared in front of her, going thoughtful.

"...You know, maybe the lack of confidence is the main reason why we have trouble making you mega-evolve."

{Are you talking about me or you?}

Shortly after, they noticed that May was less angry and was now looking a bit more regretful.

"Time to help her," Max said, standing up.

He slowly walked towards his mawile and stopped next to her.

"Can I sit beside you?"

Before answering, May looked at him right in the eyes, showing very ashamed and sad eyes.

{If you can bear being close to me.} She replied, sounding really down.

"Not only can I bear it, but I love it," he assured her, sitting down anyway.

{...Even after what I did?}

"Unconditionally."

Her reaction was a small lip quivering.

"Do you want to sit on my lap like you love?"

{Not really.}

"How about just between my legs, then?"

She considered the question for a moment before standing up and sat in between his legs, her big maw resting against his belly and resting her hands on her legs.

"I know how you feel, so I'll spare you the need to say it; I forgive you."

{How can you? I acted like a stupid idiot.}

"Don't say that. Everyone can get upset from time to time."

{I know. But I… just don't know what got into me.}

"You just felt frustration and disappointment, which I don't blame you for."

{I know that.} She replied a bit impatiently. {It's just that… I don't like being angry, especially at you.}

Hearing her stopping and not continuing, Max started to gently rub her head with the tips of his fingers.

Instead of answering, she began to nervously rub her legs.

"Oh, I think we may have hit the mark on it. But don't you think it's a bit misguided of you?"

"Per se, nothing. Absolutely nothing. However, if it's why you want to mega-evolve, I believe you won't be able to achieve that anytime soon. Also, why do you think I see you differently?"

{Because I'm too small. I can't do things that the others do. I like it when you hug me, like now, but sometimes... I wish I was able to do the same for you. Also, I can't please you like the others. Most of the time, you're the one pleasing me.}

"Are you that self-conscious about your size? You're the cutest thing ever."

{Yeah, and that's it. So, when you discovered my mega stone and I realized that I could now mega-evolve, it felt like my best dream had come true.}

At that, Max was a bit lost for words, but was still gently rubbing her head.

"Honestly, I wish I could say anything to help you. Your feelings are legitimate and very understandable. The only thing I can tell you is that if you want to mega-evolve, it should be for yourself before anything... No, I don't think that's quite right…" he mumbled. "Actually, you should want to mega-evolve for yourself and me, and I should do the same. That way, we will start to be on the same page."

{How so?} May asked, looking at him from below.

"I think that she mega-evolved way too quickly. Remember how she acted the first time and the couple of times after? It wasn't until recently that she can now properly control her mega form."

After saying that, something came to him and went thoughtful.

"...Now that I think about it, maybe that's also why you and Aurora can't mega-evolve yet. Deep down, I'm afraid that you two will mega-evolve too quickly and the same thing will happen again."

{I don't know about Aurora, but as for me, I don't think so. I mean, Aurora and Bonny both have fiery combative tempers, which isn't really my case.}

"Hehe, true. You and Dusk are way too nice."

"Of course I do. It's pokemon and people like you that prevents our world from falling into madness. But I must admit, you do have a small brawler side within you."

{Well, if someone is trying something funny on you, I guess I have to.}

"Damn, how come such a cute and small pokemon can be so protective?" Max wondered out loud with a smile, hugging her in his arms.

{Hmpf, size doesn't matter. I'll punch anything that threatens you.}

"Really? Size doesn't matter? Does that sound familiar to you?" Max asked expectantly.

Quickly, May realized her own lie that she believed.

"That's what I want you to think; size doesn't matter, whatever the circumstance is."

{I… feel stupid again.}

"Stop saying that," Max demanded while giving her a couple of quick kisses on her head. "You're not stupid, you just lack a tinsy bit of maturity and self-esteem. Nothing we can't work on together."

{...Alright. Thank you, master.} May conceded, starting to smile again. {But what are we gonna do now?}

"We're gonna stop here for today. I'm gonna give you a few days so you can work on yourself a bit and get your priorities straight. Okay?"

*sigh* {Okay.} May agreed with a fading smile.

"Don't worry. As soon as you feel you want to progress for the right reasons, we'll try again."

{You promise?}

"I double promise," he assured, gently turning her head and joining their lips for a brief moment.

{...Very well. I'll try my best and I won't deceive you again!} She expressed with conviction.

"As if that was possible."

{And in return…} May started, turning to face Max. {...maybe we could have some fun one last time in this form?} She suggested with a seductive tone and needy eyes.

"How could I refuse such an enticing offer?" he remarked, appealed by the idea.

{Hehe, I knew you would say yes.} She said and kissed him again on the lips. {See you later.}

The mawile left Max's arms and walked back to the camp. When gone, Aurora stood up and joined Max on May's spot.

{For a moment, I thought I would have to leave you alone.} Aurora commented, sitting beside him.

"Don't worry, she reserved that for later tonight."

{Great. It sure is always fun to have those kinds of images.} She sarcastically remarked.

"Don't tell me you're still that prude."

{I may be less of a bitch, but it doesn't mean I'm on the side of those who have no manners.}

"Says the girl who drools like a starving beast when we do it," he retorted with a grin.

{I d-do not!} Aurora protested, embarrassed.

"Haha, of course you don't," Max replied sarcastically. "Shall we give it a try now?"

{Sure. Anything is better than hearing lies.}

As Max let out a modest laugh, both of them stood up and began their daily session of trying to make Aurora mega-evolve, spending their time practicing on it for a little while.

*sigh* {Looks like it won't be today we succeed.} Aurora commented.

"Unfortunately. Progress sure doesn't arrive very fast."

{You tell me.}

"Let's not give up. The more we practice, the better the chances at succeeding."

Right at that moment, Scarlet spotted the both of them.

{Dinner is ready, you two.} She announced.

"Coming. Well, might as well stop for today. We'll try again tomorrow," he said, going to pick up the stone.

{Yeah. I think I'll relax for the rest of the evening.}

"Good thinking."

Both of them then walked to Scarlet and headed towards the camp.

[You should spend a bit more time with her in general. Maybe it could help.] Scarlet suggested in Max's mind.

[Yeah. I'm not asking for much but unfortunately, we don't really have a lot in common.]

[Maybe that's exactly why you should. Spending time together might help you two find some.]

[Are you sure? It will mean spending less time with you.]

[I'm not talking about being glued together all day long. Just a couple more minutes per day should be plenty enough.]

[Heh, you're so caring, you know that?]

[I know.] The gardevoir replied with a grin.

With that, they joined the others at the camp and proceeded to eat their dinner. Despite the absence of Luna, they had a great time, with May back to her cheerful, normal self, which he was glad of. Taking notice of it, Max had not seen Luna for a big part of the day and was feeling a bit worried, but told himself that she also needs her moments of solitude from time to time.

When everyone was done, it was time for the usual social time of the evening with everyone talking together here and there. On Max's side, he was sitting on a gathered trunk and was brushing Dusk's fur, to her request.

"I really like your fur, Dusk. I can't wait to see what it will look like with the conditioner I bought."

{Thanks, master. I'll definitely use it. Maybe tomorrow.}

"Is that so? For what honor?"

{Maybe for the fact of being clean, what else?} She rolled her eyes with a smile.

"Oh, yeah. Silly me," he replied, a bit embarrassed.

{Hehe, I'm just teasing you.} Dusk kindly reassured. {The truth is, we all kind of planned to go take a group bath the next time we found a suitable place.}

"Really? How come I haven't heard of it?"

{Well…} Dusk started, getting uncomfortable. {They didn't tell me that I shouldn't tell you, but…}

"But?..."

{Please, don't get upset. Promise me you won't.}

"Sure. Now tell me."

{...During the last time, we went to the pool in that hotel, the girls and I talked about that from time to time, we should spend some more girl-only time.}

"Girl only, huh? Well, I don't see the issue that was worrying you, and to be honest, that's not that bad of an idea."

Max knew that she would have known about it sooner or later, but he decided to do it, anyway. Sometimes, he does need his solitude like he was used to, just like Luna.

"Would you really have liked being there?" Max asked, still carefully brushing Dusk.

{I don't know. Maybe being there would have allowed me to correct those two machoke's attitudes.}

"See? One more reason to not be mad. That would make me quite hypocritical."

{But I did sense that you wanted to be with us. And if I do a little sneak peek into your mind, I can see exactly why you want to be part of it as well. Pervert as always, huh?} Scarlet teased with a smug grin.

"Okay, okay. No need to go into deep details," Max interrupted quickly. "You go do just that and I'll leave you girls alone."

{Rest assured, Luna will probably keep an eye on you.}

"Why her?"

Scarlet took a deep breath, exhaled, and dropped her chin on top of Max's head.

{Because she doesn't want to join us on our girly time.}

"Why? I know that it's Luna, but still…"

{She didn't exactly refuse. She said that she was touched by the offer, but prefers her solitude. I think that's where you two are alike the most.}

"Tsk, it bothers me a bit, honestly. Not because she refuses, but of always being all by herself. I wonder why she wants to be alone that much."

{Who knows? Even I can't sense her true feelings.}

"Really? Even if you look deeper?"

"Of course you can," he assured, stroking her hair. "The problem is that I might end up believing you."

{That would be bad, indeed.} She jested as well, rolling her eyes.

"...Say, I was wondering, do you plan on learning new moves?"

{New moves? Like what?}

"I don't know. Since you're also a fairy-type, maybe a fairy-type move would be nice."

{I had thought about it, so perhaps.}

"Or maybe you prefer more special attacks?"

Smiling and not replying to him, Scarlet stood up and pulled Max up as well.

She then pushed him inside it and followed him. After that, she made him sit on his sleeping bag.

"You're quite straightforward tonight," he remarked.

{You think?} She playfully asked, sitting next to him.

{...Yes?} May inquired as soon as she got in.

{Master told me that you wanted to play with him, is that right?}

{Hem… yes. But-}

{Well then, it looks like you're gonna have a good ol' threesome again.} The gardevoir announced, gently caressing one of his cheeks.

"Is that so? Does everyone agree with this?" Max said, looking at May.

{Well, I don't really mind.} May answered, hands behind her back.

{Good.} Scarlet said, moving behind Max. {Do you want to do the honor of heating him up?} She asked May.

{Of course.} The small mawile agreed, joining them.

Suddenly, Max felt his arms being held in place by Scarlet, not able to move them whatsoever.

"Is that really necessary?"

{No. It's a must.} Scarlet jested with a mischievous grin. {He's all yours.}

Smiling, May moved between his legs and went to feel his hard-on.

{I might need a little help.}

Complying, Scarlet discarded his clothes with her powers.

{That's better.} May said with emerging lust, grabbing his semi-hard shaft with both of her tiny hands.

{Are you sure it's the right thing to do?} Dusk asked.

When close enough, he jumped over her and quickly went to slash her with one of his blades from behind. Luckily, Scarlet was quick enough to use Protect, making the gallade slash an invisible kinetic wall. Scarlet immediately countered with Fire Punch, but he quickly dodged backward.

{Quick on your feet, I see.} Scarlet commented with displeasure.

{Hmpf. A gardevoir's abilities are nothing new to me. I know how to fight a psychic-type.}

{Would you look at that? A male who likes to boast about beating up females. How very manly of you.} Scarlet nagged with a devilish grin.

{Shut the fuck up or I'll make you eat your words.}

{Come over here and try, then, you enraged pussy.} Scarlet further taunted him.

With an indignant growl, the gallade jumped and threw a few Psycho Cuts at her. She shielded herself with Protect, but was momentarily blinded by the exploding light. The gallade used that opportunity to rush at her as fast as he could and connected an attack with one of his blades. He was about to get her again with his speed, but was stopped at the last second, his entire body completely immobilized.

{What?!} The gallade growled in surprise.

Within the same second all of that happened, Scarlet had recovered her sight, having one hand raised glowing with powers even before that.

{How did you see me?} He demanded, struggling to break free.

{I didn't. I just assumed where you were. You're so predictable.} Scarlet told him with her eyes starting to glow a hue of blue.

{You won't get away with this!} The gallade threatened.

{Oh, but I will.} Scarlet menacingly assured, slowly moving towards him.

{Okay, Scarlet, you won. No need to go beyond that.} Bonny intervened, walking to them.

{I know. And I suggest that you do not stop me.} The gardevoir warned.

Moving closer to the gallade, Scarlet grabbed his chin and stared at his eyes.

After that, she released him from her hold, with the gallade just standing there silently and staring blankly at nothing. Scarlet approached him and whispered something in one of his ears. When she was done, she withdrew towards the others slowly and the gallade turned to glare at his friends.
