Chapter 53: Level Up – The Novice Divine Servant
My spree of 'monster hogging' had left Captain Enrique quite aggrieved, a sentiment I could only respond to with a shrug. With everyone now gathered, it was time to swiftly move on to our next plan.
After some tinkering by Chalid and Foster, the power was finally restored, much to everyone's relief. Ready to leave this forsaken place, we boarded the tramway, which gently moved us through a lengthy tunnel to an old factory, also under the umbrella of the Umbrella Corporation. Naturally, this place was teeming with zombies and bioengineered monstrosities.
Unlike the research institute and the training facility, the factory seemed to harbor a greater number of monsters. While we had previously encountered beasts infected with the T-virus, we now faced three engineered Hunter α creatures. A single Hunter was challenging enough; facing three was a daunting prospect.
Captain Enrique looked disheartened, having been so close to ensuring the team's safe exit. The sudden appearance of these monsters was a brutal twist of fate, dampening our spirits significantly.
But I saw an opportunity in these Hunters – they were perfect prey for gathering points and experience. However, a direct confrontation would be tricky; we needed a coordinated strategy.
"Listen up, team," I addressed confidently. "Captain, you and the others just need to keep these creatures at bay. Give me one minute, and I assure you, they'll be history."
Foster appeared skeptical. We had encountered these green-skinned beasts before, knowing all too well their ferocity. But Rebecca's unwavering faith in me gave the team a glimmer of hope. To them, her belief might have seemed born out of romantic admiration, but it also served as a crucial morale booster in what seemed like our final stand.
What followed left Captain Enrique speechless. After the team opened fire, I swiftly maneuvered to an ideal vantage point, a two-meter-high crate. From there, I leaped onto a nearby iron beam – the perfect sniping spot.
With my .44 Magnum in hand, I took aim at the nearest Hunter, which was smartly guarding its vulnerable spots against our relentless gunfire. Yet, from my elevated angle, the creature's head was an open target. With a steady hand, I pulled the trigger, and the bullet blasted through the Hunter's head, scattering its brains in a grisly display.
"Keep firing!" Captain Enrique encouraged, thrilled by my effective attack. The team's morale soared, and even Rebecca couldn't hide her pride.
After swiftly dispatching the first Hunter, I moved to another beam and easily eliminated the remaining two. A rush of warmth suddenly flooded my body – I had leveled up!
Name: Zhang Fan
Race: Human
Rank: Novice Divine Servant
Talent Attributes: Infinite Upgrade, Infinite Contract
Skills: Enhanced Firepower, Silent Death, Poyu Fist
Equipment: 4A1 with silencer/thermal scope/grenade launcher, .44 Magnum revolver
Game Points: 6000+
My accumulated experience had peaked, and with the defeat of the three Hunters, the upgrade was a natural progression. My rank had evolved to a Novice Divine Servant, and my game points had soared to nearly seven thousand.
Captain Enrique patted my shoulder, laughing heartily, "Good job, lad! We owe our lives to you this time!" His joy was evident; he treated me almost like a son, grateful for the surprises I continually brought to the team.
Foster, pointing to his shotgun, lamented his own luck compared to my Magnum find. The shotgun, a formidable weapon he had found on the train, paled in comparison to the sheer power of the Magnum.
The team, convinced that I had simply stumbled upon the Magnum, left me to enjoy my peace. Having eliminated the three Hunters, we could now leave the old factory, wrapping up our daunting ordeal.
Unfortunately, we still had no lead on the Leech Queen. Deciding to sideline the mission for now, I relished the thought of a well-deserved rest.
