Chapter 9: Hey! Leave them alone!

We've stopped for the night before the group feels relaxed enough to talk freely again. There's something about the open cart traveling endlessly through the forest road the Goddess cuts into the land for us that steals thoughts from your mind and leaves you open and wondering.

The guards set us with our own little fire and we're each given a blanket that the others tell me will be taken away again in the morning. I'm not sure why anyone bothers. What are we going to do with a blanket? But maybe it's to remind us that nothing we have actually belongs to us, not really. It's all a gift that we should be grateful for.

Keeping hold of a thing can lead you to think that's for true yours. Can't have that.

"He owes you, you know."

I look up from the bowl of soup in my hands to see Sam leaning over to me, his voice low and a little knowing smile on his face. "Who?"
