Chapter 7

Taking a deep breath, I mustered the courage to speak. "Alexander, there's something important I need to tell you," I began, my voice quivering slightly. His eyes narrowed in curiosity, sensing the gravity of my words.

"I found out yesterday that I'm pregnant," I continued, my voice barely above a whisper. The words hung heavy in the air, and I watched as his face froze for a few seconds, his eyes widening in a mix of shock and disbelief.

The silence that followed was deafening. I had expected a range of emotions from him—surprise, maybe even concern or happiness. But the coldness that settled over his features was something I hadn't anticipated.

His voice, when it finally broke the silence, was distant, detached. "You should abort it," he said matter-of-fact, his words hitting me like a blunt force. My heart sank, anger and hurt bubbling within me.

"What?" I managed to utter, my voice trembling with a mix of confusion and indignation. "How can you say that? This is our child, Alexander!"

He remained stoic, his expression unyielding. "Emma, we barely know each other. We had one night together. It's not the foundation for a stable family or a healthy upbringing for a child. An abortion is the most logical solution."

His words cut through me like a knife. I had expected shock, uncertainty, even fear, but I hadn't prepared myself for this callous response. The connection we had shared that night suddenly felt trivial, insignificant in the face of his cold rejection.

Anger welled up inside me, overshadowing the hurt. "You think I'm just going to erase this life inside me because it's inconvenient?" I retorted, my voice rising with each word. "This is not just a logical problem to be solved, Alexander. It's a human being, our human being."

His expression remained unchanged, his resolve unyielding. "Emma, it's not that simple. We barely know each other. We can't possibly give this child the stability and love it deserves. It's the responsible choice."

Rage and disappointment burned within me, fueling my resolve. "Oh so you are so sensible in these matters but you aren't sensible to know that if you do not want a baby but want sex then pull out" I hit my fist on the table as I said that. "Calm down Emma, we are in public"

"You may not be ready, Alexander, but I am," I declared, my voice firm. "I won't let fear dictate my decisions like you are doing. I am no coward. I will raise this child on my own if I have to."

With that, I pushed away from the table, tears welling in my eyes. I couldn't bear to see his coldness any longer. I had hoped for understanding, for support, but instead, I was met with indifference.

As I walked away from the Elm cafe, I vowed to pour all my love and strength into raising our child. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but the fire within me burned brighter than ever. No matter what obstacles lay ahead, I was determined to give my child a life filled with love and unwavering devotion, even if it meant doing it alone. It was better to do it alone than with a father who wanted to eliminate it before it even came into the world.

I stormed into my apartment, my anger still simmering beneath the surface. The weight of Alexander's cold words hung heavy in my heart, and it seemed like no amount of distraction could alleviate the pain. But waiting for me inside were two of my closest friends, Natalie and Laila, ready to offer their support.

Natalie, with her bright smile and infectious laughter, approached me first. "Emma, what happened? You look like you're ready to explode," she said, concern etched across her face.

Laila, always the calm and composed one, joined us in the living room. "Yeah, spill it, Emma. We're here for you. We won't leave until you tell us everything," she gently insisted, her voice filled with empathy.

I sighed, feeling the weight of their friendship and support. They deserved to know the truth, to understand the turmoil that had consumed my heart. So, I recounted the entire encounter with Alexander, from the initial hesitation to the shocking moment when he suggested I have an abortion.

As I spoke, Natalie's eyes widened in disbelief, and Laila's brows furrowed with concern. They listened intently, their presence grounding me in the midst of my swirling emotions.

When I finished sharing every detail, a heavy silence settled in the room. Natalie broke it first, her voice laced with disbelief. "I can't believe he would say that to you, Emma. It's your decision, not his. He should be supportive no matter what."

Laila nodded in agreement, her expression filled with empathy. "You deserve better, Emma. You deserve someone who will stand by you, no matter the circumstances. And if he can't do that, then it's his loss."

Their words were a balm to my wounded spirit, their unwavering support a reminder of the strength of our friendship. In that moment, I felt a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. But I knew deep in my heart that it isn't truly that simple.

Natalie reached out and squeezed my hand gently. "Emma, you're not alone in this. We're here for you every step of the way, no matter what you decide. We'll support you as you navigate this new chapter in your life. With your baby."

Tears welled up in my eyes, but this time they were not born of anger or sadness. They were tears of gratitude for the incredible friends I had by my side. With their support, I could find the strength to face whatever lay ahead. I hope.

Together, we spent the rest of the evening talking, laughing, and finding solace in each other's company. The weight of my situation hadn't disappeared completely, but the love and understanding shared between up alleviated the fear within my heart.

As the night drew to a close, I hugged Natalie and Laila tightly, feeling their warmth envelop me. I knew that whatever lay ahead, I wouldn't have to face it alone. Because I have them. My friends. My family.
