When light brown eyes collided with hers, Calla suddenly understood the word 'fear.' Her palm was sweaty, and the heart beat was pounding as loud, that she felt the surrounding students could hear the fast thumping sound.
There was nothing more than she dreaded than the fact that someone would recognize her in New York city.
'Please don't…' Her trembling eyes pleaded Rose who took back her gaze and grinned to the woman named 'Evelyn.'
If not because of the fear of being exposed, Calla would have instantly recalled Evelyn Castro, one of their high school's mates who deemed her twin sister as a rival.
''I am staying with a friend, Evelyn.''
Calla felt her heart drop to the pit of her stomach when she heard Rose's voice and her words. Right, why would someone who she ignored most of the times, help her in this moment of plea?
''You are?''
''Yes, I am. She is the one right there Evelyn. Her name is Calla, Evelyn.''
Calla's body entirely froze, when two pairs of eyes stayed on her figure. As if that was not enough, other students moved their attention to her.
Normally, she wouldn't be this nerve-wracking as it was not the first time, but where she was now, was New York city, and not the familiar environment of the university.
''Oh…I see then.'' Evelyn's uninterested eyes swept the frozen figure of Calla up and down. At the sight of the black mask, her eyes flickered in disgust before returning them back to Rose with a smile on her lips. ''It seems I worried for nothing, Rose. It was quite surprising how you suddenly disappeared from the city.''
Well….that was a lie on her part.
She and Rose were not close to being with, and the only reason why she remembered the latter's name was because of the rumors going around in the high society.
Rose wasn't someone she would normally pay attention to, as the latter came from a family lower than hers.
Why would she a prestigious daughter of the Castro family pay attention to a family like that?
If not that she knew about the Madam of the kings family, who has always been looking for a bride for her son, she would have just walked past the latter.
'Her face is nothing compared to mine….' Evelyn smiled to herself as a light cough pulled from her wandering thoughts. If anyone were to tell her that Madam kings had chosen this girl as the bride for her son, Evelyn would have laughed to her heart content at the good joke.
Not when the dead Iris of the Anderson family still occupied the heart of Axel kings even to this day. Even if there were rumors about how he had married the eldest young lady of the Anderson family, Evelyn still did not believe such.
She and the twin sisters from the Anderson family had attended the same high school. She had also been one of the girls hoping to steal Axel kings from Iris Anderson.
Who wouldn't want to be his wife, a young madam of the prominent kings family?
Many young and unmarried ladies wanted that position and tried to catch the attention of Axel kings, but his eyes solely focused on the beautiful Iris Anderson, never leaving her not even for a second.
''Miss Castro…'' Emily, her manager called out to her softly, probably reminding her about their location at the moment.
''What shame, Rose. I would love to spend more time with you.''
''You did nothing wrong, Evelyn. I understand how it is to be a popular actress. Though I am not familiar with the entertainment industry, you have my utmost support, Film queen.'' Rose beamed brightly, her hands squeezing the hands of Evelyn Castro before letting go.
Film queen.
That was the name Evelyn Castro goes by in the entertainment industry. It was a name given to her by her loyal fans.
The name wasn't something to be proud of in the high society since being an actress was greatly looked down upon.
However…Evelyn had her family, so no one bothered to mess with her or insult her in the face.
This was the first time someone from with a family from the high society had referred her to that name. She really did not know if Rose was being sarcastic or not. Her wide smile and innocent face made it hard for Evelyn to know.
'Iris was always like this….' Evelyn did not know why she thought of her dead rival. Perhaps the innocent face of Rose Collins somewhat reminded her of the dead lady.
''Thank you, Rose. I do not know of your schedule, but if you can attend my grandfather's birthday banquet, please do as it will be fun to have chat once more.'' Maybe it was because she couldn't sense any bad intentions that she did this for someone with a lower status than herself.
Iris Anderson had always been like that. A very innocent and cheerful girl who always smiled at anyone and everyone. That was why she had never found any reason to hate such girl apart from the fact that she had been the first love of Axel kings.
''Ah…'' Rose's lips parted for a moment, unable to speak, and her eyes widening in surprise because of Evelyn's words. ''T-Thank you, Evelyn for the invitation. '' She expressed her appreciation, her voice trembling a bit. ''I know that I am not worthy to be a guest of the Old master's birthday banquet. Could I perhaps invite my friends?'' She asked, her brows knitting together in worry, seeming hesitant of going without her friends.
Friends?
Evelyn glanced to both sides, at the people she deemed as filth in her thoughts. Seeing as Rose was with them, perhaps she was a student from the university.
''You can invite your close friends. I will have Emily to send an invitation.'' Evelyn agreed, strutting forward to the reception table ahead.
Hmph! Those close friends of Rose should be very thankful. If not for her request, she wouldn't have thought about them.
'But…why does she remind me so much of Iris?'' Evelyn thought, wondering why her dead rival's face kept overlapping with Rose's.
Even the way Rose behaved and spoke was somewhat like Iris, which was a bit puzzling to Evelyn.
Meanwhile...
All the students were very interested in Rose with the way she behaved with Evelyn. From the rumors in the university, it was said that she was from the New York city. Now, with what happened, she was definitely from the New York city.
''Rose who is she?''
''You are really from the New York city?''
''Can I get her number?''
''Rose, did you just call her film queen?''
''Is she that Film queen?''
''You mean that popular actress?''
As the students bombarded Rose with many questions, Vincent kept observing the lady that he had his uncle joe to investigate.
'She's smart in handling Evelyn.' Vincent thought to himself.
Evelyn was just like other women from wealthy families. Very proud and entitled. She probably saw Rose as some bug underneath her heels.
As for the reason why she approached Rose, Vincent had no idea. Perhaps he should start paying attention the rumors of high society like uncle joe had suggested to him.
But…if he did…he would naturally hear of his father and half-brother, which he wanted avoid at any cost.
''...''
'Anyway…' Vincent pushed back his thought about his father's family and shifted to Calla who seemed relaxed unlike before.
'If Rose sees Calla as her enemy because of Axel kings, Calla might not be able to handle her…'
''Yo Vincent! Have you fallen for Rose?'' A hand suddenly swung over his shoulder, making him to reluctantly remove his worried gaze from his weak female friend.
''if he did and gets her, dude has won a jackpot.''
''Stupid, Vincent is also from here.''
''Really, but he hasn't admitted anything yet.''
''Vincent, are you from here like Rose?''
''I am not obliged to tell you…'' Vincent answered with a frustrated sigh, wondering when the nosiness of these boys around him would stop.
''See, he said this the last time.''
''Well…he is right.''
''But we are his friends. We are supposed to know, right Lucas?''
''It is his choice.'' Lucas among the group of boys surrounding Vincent, shrugged his shoulders, not wanting to be involved in the discussion. His non-chalance made the group to delve into a conversation, and he focused on Vincent who his friends assumed that he was staring at Rose.
But…that was a lie.
Lucas knew the person that Vincent was staring at, was not Rose or even his arrogant sister.
It was the masked freak who had never mixed with anyone.
'I wonder what's so special about her….' Lucas wanted to know why Vincent who had never been interested in any girl would suddenly be attentive to someone who was deemed as a freak in their university.
