A Scene
Vanessa stood in front of the mirror in the restroom, staring at her reflection while she left the tap in the washbasin to run.
Why did she come here tonight? Why did she let Genny get away with talking to her in that manner when she could have easily talked back?
'Alex. It's because Alex was there," a voice in her head whispered, and she sighed.
Was it really because Alex was there? Why did he have to be there to witness her humiliation? She would have been less embarrassed and less tongue-tied if he wasn't seated there on that table staring at her, Vanessa thought as she placed a hand on her abdomen and shut her eyes as she took deep calming breaths.
It seemed like he was always around whenever she was being humiliated. She remembered how he had been there that night, watching her and Sophia as they cried under the rain.
