“During the breeding season,” Jamie went on, “male California sea lions bark incessantly when establishing territories. Once established, the males bark only when maintaining and defending their territories.” He glanced at Luke with a wicked grin. “Sounds just like humans to me.”

Luke smiled back, and hoped Sofia wasn’t paying them too much attention. She seemed engrossed in her drawing. “Sofia,” he said, peering over her to see how much she’d done, “when you’ve finished that, we’re going to find the restrooms.”

Sofia groaned, still scribbling down notes next to her drawing. “Dad, I don’t need to go.”

“Well, I do,” Luke muttered. “And you say you don’t now, but you will soon.”

Sofia huffed, and said dramatically, “Fine.” Jamie turned away with a muffled sound, his shoulders shaking.

Luke frowned at him. “What?” he asked.

Jamie shook his head. He was clearly laughing and trying to hide it.
