Epilogue: The Pope King

Epilogue

Freigat city

The Pope King sat on his throne, staring intensely at the two men shackled in front of him. He was an old man, he took the throne after the passing of his father, the seventeenth Pope King in a line that spanned the now eighteen generations of his family name, the Montaegres. And not once in their long rule had they ever been so humiliated. His loyal clergymen had failed to apprehend a mere boy. And now, because of their failure, the New Religion lost an entire city to a new king, the so called 'Boy King'.

"You incompetent fools!" The Pope King hissed, the bishop of Negathor and Grenlov trembled at his voice. The Pope King's squire cowered in the corner of the room. "You had but one job, capture the boy with dreams and hold onto him until I arrived to kill him with my own hands. But you idiots couldn't even do that, now could you?!" The Pope King paused, but none of the men answered back. "And look what happened!" The Pope King clutched the arms of his chair digging his fingers into the wood.

"Sir...but.." The bishop of Negathor struggled to speak clearly, his eyes glued to the ground.

"No! Do not speak bishop! Not you! You, who had the boy in the palm of your hand. You, who let him escape from under your own nose! You have no right to say anything!" The Pope King roared.

"Your holiness.." The bishop of Grenlov hurried to defend his brother in the faith.

"Silence! You keep your mouth shut too!" The Pope King demanded.

Two guards entered the chamber, their weapons hanging around their waist.

"Of all the bishops of the faith, I thought that you, bishop of Negathor, knew that the One God requires, no, demands that we do his will completely. The one god does not take failure lightly!"

The men withdrew their swords and held them up to the bishops' backs.

"Bishop of Negathor and Grenlov, for the embarrassment you caused the new religion and the one god, because of your incompetence, I sentence you to death. May the One God have mercy on your souls."

The kingsmen plunged their steel into the bishops' hearts as if on cue. The bishops fell to the floor, life bleeding from their veins. The Pope King stood up from his seat and motioned for his squire to approach. The mousy thin man cowering in the shadows trembled as he obeyed the order.

"Send doves out to all the cardenels of Abahlon. Tell them to gather all the troops and march here to Freigat. From here, we will march to Endeloin and destroy that wretched boy and take back what is ours, in the name of the One God!" The king ordered the man.

"Yes your holiness!" The man bowed and fled from the chamber to do as he was commanded.

"Take the bodies away!" The Pope King demanded of the guards. "Hang them up for all to see."

The kingsmen pulled the bodies out of the chamber, a trail of blood leading from where the bishops fell to the door as they were drug from the room.

The Pope king followed closely behind. "I will find and kill that damned boy, I will wring him up like a slaughtered lamb. I will make him suffer until his last, painful, dying breath!" He vowed out loud as he exited the throne room.
