The police left with no more information because Harlan had insisted that he went to sleep after Helina and he arrived home. He stuck to his story, never changing it. Helina studied him the whole time and she knew him well enough to know when he was lying. Still, she needed to talk to him. She had to know that he didn’t kill Brandy.
She closed the door behind them and leaned on it. Harlan yawned, but it was time to stay awake. He flopped on his couch that acted as a bed. “What was up with that?”
“Brandy was found mauled.”
“Oh.”
She stared at him. He stared back. She was going to give him a chance to come clean.
“What? Why are you looking at me that way?” Harlan asked, sitting up.
“Were you really here all that time?”
“I was asleep, Helina. You know how I sleep. Nothing will wake me.”
“But maybe you woke up on your own and realized I wasn’t here.”
