Chapter 23

Sarah had just returned from school when she found Lucy in the living room, drinking herself to stupor. Upon seeing this, she rushed toward Lucy and took the bottle of alcohol from her.

"What is wrong with you, Lucy?" Sarah asked, surprised.

"There is nothing wrong with me. Will you please give me back my drink?" Lucy replied with a drunken tone.

"No, Lucy. I'm not giving it to you. Look at the mess you've made of yourself," Sarah scolded her.

"Well, if you won't give me back my drink, I'm going to get myself another one," Lucy said, attempting to stand up from the couch. However, she stumbled and fell due to the effects of the alcohol.

She tried to get up a second time but failed, bursting into tears.

"They used me, those bastards used me," Lucy sobbed.

"It's okay, Lucy, it's okay," Sarah consoled her.

"Let me get you a cup of milk to help you calm down. After that, we can discuss who used you," Sarah suggested. She went upstairs for a moment and returned with a glass of milk.

"Are you feeling better now?" Sarah asked after Lucy had finished the milk. Lucy nodded, wiping her face.

"So, who do you say used you?" Sarah inquired. Lucy began sobbing again.

"After what I did for them, this is how they paid me back—traitors, that's what they are, nothing but traitors," Lucy cried.

"Lucy, I still don't have a clue about what you're saying. Are you still under the influence of alcohol?" Sarah asked, concerned.

"I should have listened to you, Sarah. I should have listened to you," Lucy said, still sobbing. Sarah hugged her and encouraged her to let it out.

"We all make mistakes, sis, but what matters is whether we are sorry for the mistakes we've made," Sarah reassured her.

After some minutes of consoling her, Lucy dozed off on Sarah's lap.

When she woke up three hours later, she found Sarah watching a movie beside her. She adjusted herself on the couch.

"Hey sis, how are you feeling now?" Sarah asked her, touching her gently.

"I'm feeling a little better now. Thanks a lot. I don't know what would have happened if you weren't around," Lucy said to her sister with a warm smile.

"Don't mention it, big sister. I will always be here for you, even if sometimes you are a little stubborn," Sarah replied with a smile.

"Now, can you tell me what was bothering you that made you drink yourself to stupor?" Sarah asked, holding Lucy's hands.

Lucy remained silent for a few minutes before explaining everything to Sarah in detail. She sobbed as she recounted her story.

After hearing the whole explanation, Sarah couldn't believe her ears. She knew Lucy was capable of doing some bad things, but not to that extent. She stared at Lucy in total surprise, and Lucy turned her gaze away in shame.

"The only way to make things right is by explaining everything to Jerry and Catherine, and that's exactly what I'm going to do," Lucy said to Sarah, wiping her eyes.

"Sis, I won't advise you to do that. If they are capable of planning to ruin Jerry's relationship with Catherine, imagine what else they are capable of. Those people are very bad people. You should actually stay away from them," Sarah cautioned, holding her sister's hands.

"But if I don't do that, Jerry and Catherine are never going to get back together," Lucy said with a dejected tone.

"They have gotten back together. You should take a look at this," Sarah said, showing Lucy her phone and playing the video of Jerry proposing to Catherine. The video had gone viral on social media.

"Wow, I'm very happy for them. They are really meant for each other because despite any challenges, they always get back together," Lucy said, smiling.

"Yes, sis, they are really meant for each other. You can go and apologize to them, but please don't tell them about Cynthia and her son," Sarah advised, and Lucy nodded in agreement.

"Thanks a lot, sis. After all the mess I did, why aren't you angry with me?" Lucy asked Sarah, avoiding her gaze. Sarah approached her and hugged her tightly.

"We can choose our friends, but we can't choose our family members. I can't say I'm not angry at you for not listening to me, but you are still my sister, and I can't stay angry at you forever," Sarah said to Lucy while hugging her.

"Thanks a lot, sis, for always being there for me. I'm very grateful for that. Sometimes I wonder if I'm really the big sister or the younger sister," Lucy said to Sarah with a warm smile after they had disengaged from the hug.

"Come on, sis, you are my older sister," Sarah said to Lucy with a smile.

"But normally, I'm the one who is supposed to be watching over you, not you watching me. I'm really a terrible big sister," Lucy said to Sarah with a dejected tone.

"Come on, sis, stop saying that. You are the best big sis I have ever seen, and I can't wish for more," Sarah said to Lucy while smiling. Lucy smiled back at her.

"So, sis, are you hungry? Because I cooked your favorite Irish potatoes with fried chicken," Sarah informed her sister, who widened her eyes in surprise.

"You cooked my favorite meal and didn't inform me all this while?" Lucy asked Sarah, grinning from ear to ear.

"Come on, let's go and dish it out. I'm very hungry, and I can eat a whole house," Sarah said, leading the way upstairs, with Lucy following closely behind.
