A warm home II

First it was all blurry, then the ceiling came into full clear view, out of habit I checked the alarm clock beside my bed..

"damn I can't believe I slept for 4 straight hours" I was muttering to myself when I smelt the aroma wafting from the kitchen and I before I knew it, I was taking the stairs two at a time, almost tripping on my way to the kitchen.

" you're back papa"

"yes yes, and you'll never believe what I got with me here" he said as I stepped into the kitchen.

My father stood in front of the oven staring the contents of a saucepan in front of him. whatever he was making smelt so good, it made my mouth water. He looked over his shoulder.

" you wanna Guess?".

" no dad, you know I'm barely good at it "

I pulled out a chair from the dinning table am slipped into it.

"well it's actually nothing special just an envelope I found in mail box for you" he said handing me a sealed envelope

" for me, wow,I haven't received any mails in awhile, except emails containing my pay check" we chuckled over it while open the envelope.

My father came to stand beside me peering over my shoulder as I fiddled with an invitation card

" what you git there"

" oh this, it's uuhhh , an invite to a friends party" I responded while discarding the invitation.

" are you going?" my father asked

" are you kidding me of course I'm not"

" I'm really sorry veta, I should have....."

" just stopped it dad you've apologized enough already and besides it's not your fault, shit happens!" I reply cutting him off

The invitation came from my childhood friend Liliana montego, our parents used to be friends and business partners until my father lost everything and had us move here, and just like ever other aristocrat family, the montego's dropped all contacts with my family cause they didn't want to soil thier name by mingling with losers. The invites came every year but for the past few years I had been burying them in my stack of books cause I knew if I attended the party, I'll only be reminded of how my family lost thier social standing because of my father's recklessness.

my father turned his attention back to his cooking

" what are you thinking of vera"

" dad, mom said there was something you wanted to talk to me about?" I saw him turn stiff immediately I uttered those words

" dad are hiding you something from me?"

"hiding.... no vera I'm hiding nothing from you, now's just not the time to talk about it"

" okay... " I could tell there's was something serious bothering both mum and dads and it was about me, but I decided to wait until there were ready to tell me

" sayyy vera, how about you lay the table and I'll serve dinner, your mom and sister should be back any minute

" That's right I haven't seen any of them, Karina wasn't home when I came back earlier and now where's mom"

" she went to pick Karina up from her friends place and they decided to stop at God knows where, anyways dinner is served "

" you know what papa? you're the best!"

" of course I only get to be the best cause I'm the only one who makes all delicious around here" hehehe

" hahahaha but that's not entirely true" I watch him grin from ear to ear

" yeah that's right"
