It's better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all. The saying dwelt in Ryker's head for the period he sat in the church and endured the funeral ceremony. Ryker knew he wasn't smart, but he thought that whoever had made up that saying was probably less smart than he was. He wasn't a fan of emotional outbursts, either. He preferred to look for the silver lining in every black cloud.

But throughout the entire ceremony, he felt sombre and broken. He hadn't really gotten to know Jace very well. Outside the occasional visits with Jacob, he really had no other connection with Jace.
