Chapter 70: Old Friends And New Problems

Marriette hadn't considered the effect of arriving at Joan's estate in the deLanguiers coach. Men and women stopped work to stare with hostile eyes. They followed the coach to the gate of the estate, long gone. Marriette banged on the roof and the coach stopped. The driver helped her out, he looked doubtfully at the approaching crowd, but hoisted out her trunk and climbed back on the coach. There was a wide enough expanse of grass for him to turn around. He waited for the road to be open.

A stocky woman with greying hair, but no hint of weakness in her body peered at Marriette.

"What's the Regent want with us?" Suze relaxed and held up a hand to stop the others.

"You know I'm not the Regent any longer." Marriette sat on her trunk. "I'm back to Marriette leBraun, Joan's friend."

"No one just goes back to their old life after holding power like that."
