Lucy's words registered, but with time. It was somewhere there in her mind, and she remembered that she had to answer her too.
"Yes," she answered, "this might be the only time I actually can do this." Otherwise, who knew when her parents would arrive to take her away.
If she did not read them now, we could only wonder when she might have the next opportunity to do it.
It was only a matter of time before her parents were going to come knocking on this door.
"Sit down then," Lucy dragged a barstool towards her, "here."
She lowered herself into it before taking over the first page.
