3. The Rolls

Alan sat down at the table and looked at the dice with trepidation. Sometimes they were good to him and sometimes, well sometimes you ended up with an orc whose strength was only eight with modifiers. That was a horrible adventure. There were eight separate piles of dice in the table and no paper on his side. This was an interesting trick to keep players honest of you had enough dice and since, you know God, there was no shortage of dice. Some players would roll the stats quickly and write the number down after they picked up the dice. That way they could write the number they wanted no matter the roll.

"Nice technique, I appreciate all the effort you put in here."

"Sucking up will not get you any bonus dice."

"Worth a shot." Alan grabbed the first pile of dice and gave them a shake and rolled them out on the table. He tried not to be disappointed but his first roll was only eleven. Not bad just average and he knew that in his world average could take you a long was but not to the top.

He pushed the first pile off to the side and picked up the second pile. After shaking them just a little more than the first time he rolled them out and three fives greeted him. With a much bigger smile he pushed the second pile over beside the first. He sat there for a second and thought about everything that he did so that he could copy it. Many gamers had little superstitions that they swore by.

He copied everything from the second roll and was even more excited with a sixteen was showing. He restrained himself from jumping up and down and pushed the third pile over. Again he tried to copy everything and the bottom dropped out of his heart when it was only a nine. Again it was a little below average but anything without a positive modifier was not good in his opinion.

Alan pushed himself back from the table and stood up and walked around. This was always the most nerve-wracking time to him. He shook his head and sat back down and with no hesitation he picked up the fifth pile in one hand and tossed them. He almost threw up when it was all ones. Suddenly the dice were back in a pile. "That is no fun for anyone. But if it happens again it will have to be your throw away."

"Thank you. No sucking up intended that is cool of you and I really appreciate it." The being just gave him a smile. Alan picked the pile back up and gave them another shake. He grinned from ear to ear when it was all sixes. He was not sure but he would not have been surprised if a little luck left over from him being saved was left on the dice.

Again he tried to exactly copy his last roll and another fifteen popped up. He still had two more rolls and as long as they were average he was positive that he could have a hell of a good character. Another attempt to copy and a sixteen graced the table. Now Alan was getting really excited.

This last roll would determine if he was OP or just above average. With a deep breath he picked up the last set of dice and with the exact some number of shakes tossed them out and he jumped up yelling when another eighteen showed. Even though these rolls were better than he could have imagined for actual rolls he decided to be a little greedy.

"Esteemed one where are the extra dice?"

"What extra dice?"

"Take a look deep in my noggin and see what I am talking about."

A mere moment passed by and the being raised an eyebrow at him. He saw the stats and knew how great they were but he would go ahead and indulge the man. He had killed him. Suddenly two more dice were on the table. One had six sides like the rest but the other only had four. The system that Alan learned and used even when drawing up NPCs for his books was the die six was extra ability points and the die four limited the number of points to any one skill. While it would occasionally make an OP character more often than not it was to help balance it out.

Alan scooped them up and gave them a roll. He did another little dance in his seat when a six and a three popped up. Suddenly a paper and pencil appeared in front of him. There were no slots this was just the scrape for him to make notes and things on. He wrote down all the raw numbers and started moving the bonus points back and forth.

After covering the paper front and back and going back to some options like four times and weighing and planning he finally found the numbers that he wanted to use. He would have preferred his lowest to be a little higher but it was his fault since he boosted one of his stats past the base maximum and went with a twenty. When it was all said and done he was working with 13, four 16s, 18, and a twenty. He was way over powered and he would only need one level to bring that last one to the next level.

"Alan I do believe with those numbers you are going to be a little over the top. How about we work a deal?"

"What do you have in mind?"

"Well you are expert at this. If you had a character in your group like this what would you do?"

Alan sat there for a few minutes and thought and thought. He had no problem with OP characters bit he had been in a similar position with a DM once he had come out on top but not by much. "How about a plus four bonus on all skills and not just class ones, an extra feat, a haversack, and a minor magic items for the class. I will give up the twenty and one sixteen. That is a bonus per point."

"Make it a plus two for cross class and a plus four for class and I get to chose the magic item."

"How about two or three items and I get to chose one?"

"I will do four items including a medium power one but you have to roll for it." The being was confident that he would never get the medium powered one since he was only going to make it a one percent chance but he did not say anything yet.

"Deal." Alan knew there was going to be almost no way that he got the medium item but that would not stop him from trying, the skill points and feat was worth that and two magic items were a huge bonus for him. Especially the skill points since craft and profession were class for everyone and there was no limit. He would use those and make a lot of money to buy the other stuff he wanted.

The being was a little worried about the other things but he assumed that early the magic items would make him OP. He was not taking into consideration Alan's knowledge of the game and the fact he created this world. Well this world was all in his head just made real.

The dice disappeared from the table and five blank character sheets appeared in front of him. Alan looked at them and frowned a little. "What is it now Alan?"

"Can I use the sheet that I am most familiar with? It is mostly the same mainly a different layout."

"Hold your hand above the sheet and picture your sheet. That will change it."

Alan held out his hand and pictured the sheet he had designed for fighters to include the extra craft slots that he always put in. He moved his hand to the second one and did the same for a ranger, the third for a rogue with the skills on a completely different sheet. The fourth and fifth ones took a little longer as the stacks of paper grew. It added all of the spells at every level for each of them. Alan decided that he had always liked the sorcerer over the wizard so that is the way that he went.

"Now come the fun part."

[The rolls above are the rolls from a Table top RPG type game. The piles of die in this case are 4 d6 and you take the top three die as your ability score. Some Game masters will go with only 3d6 and that is what you get and some will go up to 5d6 if they are planning a high power campaign. That was why the highest score that he could get was an 18. I am sorry for any confusion and thank you for the commentor that asked the question.]
