16 Chapter 15

"Wait, it's only starting now?" asked Thor. She might have mentioned that his presence alone lowered the intelligence of the entire room.

He was supposed to be the future King of Asgard, but even with her newfound eyes, she failed to see how he would lead the nine realms.

The last time her land had a foolish lord, he plunged the land into an irreversible curse. She felt like she was seeing the descent of a new age of fire in this world that has yet to know the horrible curse of immortality.

Thor, however, still looks confused as Tony rolled his eyes at him. Nat lowered her head as she tried her best to be patient. The doctor looked embarrassed while the captain looked like he wanted to say the same thing without sounding rude.

"I recall mentioning that this would be the start of a long story." she replied.

"Oh, yes, please continue.", replied Thor.

"Eons have passed since Gwyn has become the first Lord of Cinder. Kingdoms has risen and felled. Various lords and mighty beings have attempted to destroy the curse and fail. Here we are, at the end of the world.

We shall travel forward in time, at another cycle of rekindling, the last one. The First Flame is dying once again, and the Lord of Cinder who would have rekindled it, Lothric, refused to do so. Thus, previous Lords were brought back to life so their power could be used to rekindle the Flame.

Ludleth, one of the Lords, sits on his throne at the Firelink Shrine, accepting his fate as nothing more than a sacrifice. Lothric remains past the Grand Archives with his brother, Lorian. The other three Lords — Yhorm the Giant, the Abyss Watchers, and Aldrich, Devourer of Gods — continue to wander the world, carrying their Lord Souls with them.

I personally, have never witness the Lord of Cinder in the true height of their powers, but they must be immensely powerful to be considered a lord of Cinder.

The power they hold must have been mighty before they gave their body to the flames.

With the Flame fading, bells ring out, awakening the Unkindled. These creatures differ from the Undead, who generally seek humanity and darkness.

Instead, the Unkindled seek the Flame itself, gathering little Embers as they can. Personally, I believe that the unkindled were formed, by the very era to prolong itself.

Among the unkindled, one stood out. He was named the Ashen One is part of the many prophecies that is spread among our lands.

The most famous one who was part of the prophecy was called the Chosen Undead. He no longer exists as his time has long past.

The ashen one was the protagonist of the new prophecy. The prophecy always speaks of the same thing. To light the flames and sacrifice themselves to prolong this cursed era.

I assisted the Ashen one by his side as he gathered souls of the undead and other monsters. Using these souls, I made the Ashen one stronger, faster, and tougher.

He eventually grew powerful enough to slay the past lords of Cinder and use their souls to fuel the flame. However, he chose not to do it as there were only a few hundreds who were still aware of themself.

He finally allowed my painful world to rest. Thus, ending my world. When the flame died down, a spark flew out into this world.

That would be me. Even the first flame in all its might will eventually burn out. I am but a mere ember, from the once majestic flame and will soon burn out too."

She stopped as she gave them time to process her words. "So, why is it that we are forgetting you?", asked Nick Fury with his expressionless face once again.

"Would anyone remember a fading ember that is about to turn into ash when there's a whole fire burning in front of you?", she merely replied. This answer seems to satisfy everyone.

"So, why are you burning again? Unless you burn another soul for fuel?", asked Nick Fury as his eyes turn cold and calculating. This also seems to bring the Avengers back from the reality of her painful world as they eye her with suspicion.

"I stated that firekeepers would always care for the fire. This is the case even after death. I now carry a shard of every single soul from my world.

Among those many shreds are firekeepers who willingly sacrificed their shards of souls for me. I was not aware that they could do that as they are not sentient. However, duty still drives them to serve the flame.

I now have another year left."

The avengers hung their head in shame as they looked like they were accusing their comrades of sacrificing people to live longer.

[Tony Stark POV]

He was now panicking despite not showing anything on his face.

'There must be a way', he thought. He had no idea of how to create souls to continue her to keep burning. He does not know if he can use other source of fuel to keep the flame burning.

He was afraid of her at first. It was not that she was doing anything particularly scary. Her ability to teleport keeps him awake at night. 'What if', he thought 'What if she went rogue one day?', to himself.

Her ability to teleport means that nothing on Earth can capture her as she can escape from any situation. This was made worse with the fact that her offensive powers were too strong.

Imagine staying in your bunker when it starts burning out of nowhere without warning. 'Wait', he thought to himself as he realized something.

'Escape, can she escape from the fire? Separate herself into different entities? She mentioned existing before becoming the flame. Can she go back to her old self using her own soul?'

She was once a firekeeper meaning she would know the fire more than anyone that exist. The flame is no longer needed to serve a world meaning it could be extinguished without consequences.

He voiced his thoughts to her.
