Sound Proof Or Not

"I'm dumb because I want to pay my debt?" I asked

"How can a small frame like you crash the side mirror of such a car?

"What do you mean?" I asked confused

"Earlier that day, the driver discovered that the side mirror was shaky and won't stay for long, he was to take it for a change the next day, before you bumped into it and removed it completely, besides it wasn't your fault, someone stole your bag, and by the way that bag was retrieved, it's in my office, I've been looking for the perfect time to hand it over to you"

I stood speechless, a million and one thoughts running through my mind

"Why did you subject me to all those things if you knew it wasn't my fault? You made me worried, restless, you even forced me to work with you, using the damage to threaten me, why?" I asked with a rush of emotion

"I wanted you around, one look at you and I wanted to keep you by my side, I'm sorry, no I'm not sorry, I'm glad I did what I did, I'm glad I had you, it's been an awesome time with you."

I wasn't ready to dwell on that right now, so I decided to turn the tables on him.

"So your office isn't sound proof after all?"

"It is, but if the door is slightly opened, you'll hear the conversation going on inside from outside"

"Oh" I simply said, not sure if I want to talk about what I heard

"I saw you by the door, you were there, but I don't know how much you heard"

"I did not hear anything, when I got to the door, she was leaving already" I covered up, but I wasn't sure he believed

"So why were you crying?" He asked looking at me like he was going to draw the truth from my eyes.

"Hmmm, I told you something got into my eyes"

"My step dad is ill and I'm so worried about my mom"

"I hope it doesn't come to that, thank you, I should leave now"

"Heading out too, let me drop you off, I'm driving I gave the driver the day off "

Carl and I headed out of the building together, he held my hand in the elevator and did not leave it immediately, so when the elevator came open, I caught sight of Sarah, and she did see Carl and my hands together before I pulled my hands out of his.

I waved her a good bye as we came out of the building.

"You could come in for dinner" I offered to Carl as we got to my apartment

"I'd rather have something else" before I could respond to that, his phone rang he said something like "my house? Why didn't you inform me? I'm on my way there now"

The blood in his face looked drained

"Is something wrong?" I asked worriedly

"Everything's fine, I have to go now, good night"

"Goodnight"

I headed into the house, washed my hands and decided to make dinner, still deciding on what to cook, I heard the door bell.

Andrea wasn't back from her honeymoon, Carl had gone home to something urgent, I don't receive any other visitors, and so who could that be?

I opened the door to see Sarah

"What a surprise, I didn't even know you knew where I stay"

"Oh I followed you once, haha just kidding, your address on your employee folder has been updated, sorry I took a sneak peek into it, can we go out for dinner?"

She seemed harmless, and I was indecisive about what I wanted to cook, so I accepted

"Sure, come in let we have a quick change of wear and we'll go, do you have some place in mind?

"I was thinking we go to 'Le Meal', I've been craving Chicken Tortilla soup"

"That sounds good"

I washed my genitals and had a change of clothes, didn't want to be smelling like sex, I grabbed my purse and we both headed out, with me locking the door behind me

We arrived at 'Le Meal' in a cab Sarah ordered while I was dressing up, it was 5 minutes drive from my place.

"What's going on between you and Boss?" Sarah asked when we were halfway into our meals, now the real reason for this invitation was coming out

"Nothing, why did you ask?"

"I'm not a fool Melanie, I saw him holding your hand in the elevator this evening, he also brought you home, Mr Mason doesn't drive anyone anywhere" Sarah fired

"Look Carl only held my hand because I slipped a little, there is nothing going on" I lied

"Wow, Carl? You both are on first name basis"

"That's a slip of tongue, Mr Mason is my boss, and I have no interest in him, besides he has a fiancée" I fired back, feeling restless already

"No need to be all defensive Melanie, I'm only looking out for you, and I'm glad you know he has a fiancée, and do you know Mr Mason's father is so supportive of the Fiancée and Carl has no choice but to get married to her?"

"I didn't know about that, and I don't care a bit about their family issues, he can do whatever he likes" I said trying not to let my disappointment show, so that's why Floral was so confident back there, it was because she had Carl's father's support.

"Boss' father cherishes relationship that's why he wants them to get married because both families has been friends for a long time, but we all know the marriage has something to do with business and not friendship"

"Is that so?" I said trying to act as if I wasn't interested in the topic, but Sarah didn't seem to notice, she kept going on

"Mr Mason has had his own share of heartbreaks and is not ready to fall in love with any woman, his father also thinks other ladies are after him for his money, well his mom on the other hand doesn't have a say in this whole matter.

It's quite obvious Mr Mason doesn't love his fiancée, he didn't even propose to her, the father just declared them engaged to be married, how can a grown up man not take his own stand?

How can he allow his father manipulate him that way?"

Sarah was going on and on, but the topic was only making me feel sick

"I have to call it a night Sarah, I feel a bit sick, thanks for inviting me," I said signaling the server that served us so I could pay for the meal

"You don't need to pay for both of us, pay yours and I'd pay for mine"

"Good idea" I said and paid for my meal

When I got home, all I wanted to do was just sleep, I didn't want to think about anything else, I just wanted to sleep.

I threw myself on the bed not bothering to shower and I forced myself to sleep.

I awoke the next morning to my phone ringing, who could be calling so early this morning?

I looked at the phone, it was mom,

"Mom, good morning, is all well?"

"Mel dear, Mark slumped during the night, he woke up and said he was going to get water from the kitchen, I went back to sleep but after a while he was not back in bed, I went down to check up on him and I told him on the floor in the kitchen, the glass was shattered on the floor, I called the ambulance.

We are at the hospital now, the doctors are attending to him, I hope he is alright, I'm so worried Mel, sorry to bother you so early this morning, I just needed someone to talk to at this waiting hour"

"It's fine mom, he will be fine, stop worrying, have you called his son?"

"Yes baby, I've called Andrew, he will fly down by morning"

"Call me when there's news, I love you"

I got up to get ready for work, I was so distracted that I even overheated the water for bath and almost burnt my skin.
