The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

The team competition

The five minute warning went off not long after that.

"God," Jax rubbed his forehead, "You idiots are really good at wasting time."

"Idiots?" Savannah was irritated by that statement, "The three of us are used to acting as our own unit. We are more than capable of handling ourselves. With or without you two."

"Savannah," I looked at her over my shoulder, "Drop it."

Savannah wasn't used to me talking this way so she looked kind of stunned, but she stopped talking so I got what I wanted.

"We don't know each others fighting styles very well," I rubbed the back of my neck, "So we should use a loose support type formation. One that doesn't rely on our fighting together, but keeps us in line of sight of each other so we can support each other if the need arises."

Everyone looked at me funny.

"What?" I shrugged, "Goliath didn't just beef me up."

Savannah almost broke out into laughter. She was feeling a bit smug now that I'd just knocked everyone down a peg. The start sound went off as the room lights shut off. The door that led into the arena opened up. Letting some light into the now dark room.

"We're going with Wyatt's plan," Pain dude walked out into the light first.

The rest of us followed not far behind. We let Jax go out next. I gave Ethan, and Savannah each their own meaningful look before we headed out together. A quick reminder that I'd told them to keep me in check during this whole competition. I couldn't lose my temper with another mage around.

We held a loose formation with me falling back to the rear. Savannah kept glancing back to me as if she thought something would go wrong with me heading up the rear. I let my irritation through to her. She stopped looking at me for a while after that. My eyesight was way better then any of theirs so I'd be the first to spot anything anyways.

Regardless of whether I was in the back or not.

"Nine O'clock," I snapped.

Savannah, and Ethan both responded in kind. Ready for a fight. I switched to infrared, and tensed to sprint past them all. Advanced squad if I had to guess. We'll have to change direction after this.

Jax, and pain dude looked back at us since we stopped. I ran full speed towards the enemy.

"Ethan," I spoke quietly as I rushed past him.

Ethan broke up a large portion of wall into pieces the size of marbles. Ready to support me if I needed it. I jumped around the corner with enough speed to catch them off guard. I didn't recognize either so I had no problem knocking the both out. Giving them a punch each.

I picked them both up, and carried them back over to our group.

"Two points," I dropped them both, and patted Ethan's shoulder, "What are you two doing anyways?" I pointed at Jax, and pain dude, "Did you really walk right past them without noticing them?"

Pain dude wasn't surprised that I was more observant than him. Jax on the other hand had a look on his face that screamed disbelief. I switched back to my normal vision so I could enjoy the look on his face properly.

"Do you want me to take the lead since you guys kind of suck at noticing enemies?" I smirked at them.

Savannah smacked me on the back of the head, "You really didn't need to show off like that, and stop smirking. It always looks fake."

I dropped the smirk, and shrugged. I started walking. Taking the lead casually with my hands in my pockets. I still hadn't shown them much. Not really.

Ethan followed behind on my right. Savannah on the left. The other two looked at us as we got ahead of them. From there it was easy to one hit all the idiots that tried to sneak up on us. We knocked out half a dozen other students without breaking a sweat.

The more students that came our way the more irritated Jax became. I wasn't sure how many more weaklings I'd have to deal with before coming across someone strong. My instincts screamed something was wrong.

"Cover," I turned, and yelled at the others, "Now."

Ethan brought up all the marble sized debris he'd kept with him. Forming a makeshift wall to block the enemies line of sight. He knew which direction the attack would come from just like I did. I was too far ahead for him to properly protect me as well. The shot hit me from the right.

Exploding on contact. Bits, and pieces of my shoulder were flung all over the place as I was flung to the left. The bullet had dug through to my shoulder to the bone, but stopped there. Blood gushed from the deep wound, but I barely flinched from the pain. I pointed with my left hand.

"He's there," I glanced at Ethan, "Take him out Ethan."

"How far?" Ethan crumpled up several marble sized debris until he hand one the size of a fist.

"Hundred yards," I dropped my hand as I stared at the sniper, "About the height of a second story roof. Savannah." I shook my head as I got woozy, "Cauterize my wound. I'd rather not bleed out today."

Ethan shot the rock out. Relying on my directions. Savannah rushed forward with a good sized flame already formed. She slammed the flame into my wound. I hissed in pain as the wound was seared shut.

Attempt to gain fire affinity registered.

It didn't help my lightheadedness when the notification popped up in my vision.

Attempt failed.

Savannah let off. At least I wasn't bleeding anymore.

"Wrap it up quickly," I scanned our surroundings quickly, "We just announced our position to everyone in the area."

We'd taken out the majority of two teams already, but we hadn't seen the fourth team yet. I was getting bored with fighting all these combat novices. Most of them moved in such predictable ways that I could see their moves coming from a mile away. Combine that with my steadily sharpening instincts, and there was very little that could get past me. I'd sensed the sniper as soon as he decided to shoot at me.
