The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

System my xp.

I shifted darting to my next spot. I was so focused, and calm right now that I didn't think I would miss. I was moving mostly on automatic at this point. Firing away shots as needed, but I wasn't paying much attention to what was going on in the simulation though. I kept shooting glances up to Savannah each time I switched positions.

The last simulation finished rather quickly. They struggled more than the groups before them, but that was because there were less of them. I got five this round.

I crossed room quickly. Making my way towards Savannah. A part of me wanted to confront her, but another part wanted to make her go away. Goliath stopped me before I got to her though.

"Something bothering you," Goliath whispered.

"She's been staring at me," I looked up at him, "I was going to ask her to stop."

I was lying. I didn't want to resort to hurting her, but I needed her to back off. I couldn't have her digging deeper into this secret of mine. I didn't want Goliath to interfere. I needed to handle it myself.

"Alright," Goliath took the practice rifle from me, and I let him.

I stepped past him heading for Savannah as the Goliath went to the last group to give them pointers. I kept my pace calm as I came up to her. She seemed to throw herself into her conversation to keep me from talking to her. I tapped her shoulder.

"Hey I'm talking to Lisa," Savannah rounded on me.

"I know," I frowned, "But I saw you watching me. I don't like it." I leaned closer, "I'd like it if you would stop using your magic to keep an eye on me, mage. I'm not your problem."

Savannah pushed me away from the group.

"Coming from a guy that's hiding both air, and water elemental abilities," Savannah's face went blank, "So who are you working for exactly?"

"No one," I snapped.

"Why would you hide your abilities as a mage then?" Savannah at least had the decency to keep her voice down.

"I don't know what you're talking about," The air shifted around me with my agitation.

I stuffed down the emotional turmoil. I hadn't realized that my connection to the elements had gotten harder to control now that I had two of them.

"Yeah," Savannah looked skeptical, "No clue at all."

"I didn't choose this," I glanced around the room to see if anyone was watching us, "I don't want to be drawn, and quartered for something I didn't have a choice in."

"How did you not have a choice?" Savannah snapped clearly not believing a word I said.

"I'm not discussing this with you," I stepped back, "Just stay away from me."

I turned heading out of the room slowly.

"The club meeting isn't over yet Wyatt," Goliath shouted from across the room.

"Sorry sir," I yelled back, "I'm not feeling well. May I leave?"

"You're dismissed," Goliath yelled, "Don't make a habit of it."

I nodded as I opened the doors, and left. I wasn't going to risk discussing this with her anymore. She probably wouldn't let up. This would probably end up backfiring on me eventually. I went to the cafeteria, and got my usual plate of meat.

I didn't stuff it down like I usually did. I still finished it all, but I was so busy thinking that I just zoned out of the world right in front of me.

I stood up dropping my tray off so it could be cleaned as I went to back to the dorm room alone. I'd gotten somewhere with the water element when I'd been freaking out a little in class. I wanted to get some progress done on the element while it was all still fresh. If Savannah told anyone about me my elemental abilities might be the ace in the hole I needed to escape. I strolled into my room, and tossed my clothes to the side.

Switching forms, and casually hopping on my bed. I could feel the stress of the day slowly slipping out of me as I sat on the bed. Just feeling my elements circulate around the room in their natural state. That cold feeling in my core from earlier. I closed my eyes slowly as I focused in on that cold feeling again.

I could feel it slowly coming back to me. The way I'd felt when I'd frozen the water around me in the club room. I didn't feel anything at first. Then I felt the familiar feeling of my mana draining.

New skill. Frozen zone level 1. Everything within 10 feet of user will freeze. Cost 5 mp.

I opened my eyes slowly as I memorized that cold feeling at the center of my being. My eyes open wide when I saw the state of my room. This frozen zone spell was no joke. Half of my room was frozen solid. My bed was stiff, and crunched slightly when I moved.

I didn't feel the cold, and the ice had spread up my body a little as well. System why don't I feel cold?

User has gained cold resistance from the water affinities ice attribute. Cold will hardly affect user. Users spells will not affect user in any negative way.

So I can't freeze myself to death accidentally. I huffed out a breath. I could see the cloud of breath form as it floated away from me. I huffed again as a feeling of childlike joy went through me. I kept huffing out breaths as I jumped around my room.

Literally bouncing off the walls as the excitement got through every inch of me. My bed crunched beneath my feet as I jumped on it a few more times. I blew out a stream of steam like I was a train. Then I realized I was acting more like a puppy that had just gotten a new toy. This wasn't the way I normally acted, but it had been such a good feeling.

All my worry had melted away for a little while. All my anger was gone. I was left with just the joy of playing. It was like quick instant therapy. I needed to do something like this more often.

If all I had to do to get rid of my rage was play for a bit then I'd have to do that more often. I bounced on the bed a few more times as that joyous playfulness started to take over again. I stopped myself from bouncing when I heard someone walk into the common area. I walked up to the door listening for a few seconds to make sure it was Ethan that had come in. I opened the door just a crack.
