The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Sensitive hearing

I hadn't done any damage that would kill them, but they were hurt pretty badly. They wouldn't be able to launch a full strength attack again for a little while. My mana was beginning to get siphoned out by the anti mana material. I covered the ground beneath me in a layer of ice. That wouldn't stop the wolves from loosing mana, but it seemed like their mana was harder to draw out than my own.

I needed a way to quickly disable them without killing them. They were just going wild. They weren't really thinking so something that snapped them back to their senses would probably have the same effect. My wings twitched as the wolves slowly began to recover. What could I do to disable them with minimum damage?

What weaknesses did wolves have? There weren't many. Their individual strength wasn't all that great, but werewolves could enhance their strength with their mana so besides physically damaging them enough to kill them I didn't know of any weaknesses. What other trait could be considered a weakness? I couldn't think of any.

Soren was the first to stand. He growled at me, and stayed close to Grett. He wasn't trying to attack yet. He was waiting for Grett to recover so they could attack together. They were both weaker than me individually so that was a smart tactic.

Maybe I could use their strength against them? I couldn't think of a way to use their physical strength or speed against them. What about their senses? You can overwhelm a person's senses so why couldn't I do the same to a werewolf? Which one though?

Sight. No. I could create flashes of light with my lightning, but I'd never attempted anything like that before, and just doing something dangerous because it might work wasn't a good plan when it came to electricity. Smell. No.

That wouldn't work either. I wouldn't be able to pull a stink bomb out of thin air, and even that didn't guarantee stopping them if they'd trained their senses to deal with strong scents. Touch, and taste was out. I wasn't going to be able to overwhelm such senses without some sort of item or tool to aid me. That left hearing.

Dogs, and wolves had more sensitive hearing than humans. They could pick up sounds that humans couldn't even detect. What could I do to overwhelm their hearing? Make a noise too loud for them to ignore. How would I?

I'd forgotten that my large size had given me huge powerful lungs. I'd have to be an idiot to forget something that obvious. Soren, and Grett rushed me together. They both tried to dig their teeth into my neck, but I'd gotten used to the speed Soren was using, and Grett wasn't fast enough in the first place. I grabbed Grett around the neck, and knocked Soren away into the wall.

Inhaling through the entire motion. Now that my lungs were as full as they could get, I roared. The sound reverberated throughout the room. Grett, and Soren both covered their ears desperately. It was actually kind of weird for me since I couldn't actually hear my roar clearly.

The only reason I even knew that I was making any sound at all was because I could feel the vibrations of it as it left me, and the vibrations it caused in the room around me. I could hear my ears pop when I stopped roaring. The wolves shook their heads, and recovered quickly. It wasn't loud enough. Not enough to stop them.

How could I make my roar louder? How could I make sound loud enough to stop them? I inhaled while they were finishing their recovery, and used my air to push the sound forward more forcefully. All I did was slam them backwards into the wall.

"That wasn't right," I snorted.

I inhaled again. Slower this time. How could I amplify the sound? No. Maybe not make it louder.

Maybe I could change the frequency. High pitched sounds tended to do more damage than normal ones so I roared again. Trying to bring up the pitch to a more harmful frequency while at the same time. The difference in the wolves reaction was almost instant. Covering their ears wasn't enough to block the wall of sound that hit them.

The high pitch completely bypassed any attempts they made to cover their ears. Blowing their ears drums, and rattling their brains at the same time. They both collapsed. Reverting back to their human forms as they clutched their bleeding ears.

"What was that?" Soren yelled as the bleeding in his ears stopped.

He wouldn't hear me even if I responded so I didn't bother. I waited about half an hour before I was certain they could hear again.

"Better?" I cocked my head as I yawned.

"Better!?!" Soren exclaimed as his features became slightly more wolf like, "You wrecked my ears!?!"

"I could have done a lot worse," I chuckled.

"How?" Soren complained.

My tail whipped around him. Tightening my tail around his middle until I had three whole loops wrapped around him.

"I could have just crushed you," I moved my head closer to his body with a toothy smile.

"Good point," Soren smiled nervously, "Why are you stronger?"

"Shrinking that much has disadvantages," I loosened my coils, and dropped him, "Are you in control of yourself now or do I need to knock you out again?"

"Mostly," Soren rubbed his ears again, "I didn't mean to loose my temper like that. I haven't lost control that bad in years. You lying to me like that just pissed me off." his jaw tensed, "My nose doesn't lie. I do still smell poison on your breath. So the real question is why are you lying about being poisonous?"

I didn't know what to say back to him. I really didn't. He knew the deadly secret that I kept in my mouth. He didn't suspect or wonder. He knew.
