The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

False accusations

It was the kind of face that was hard to tell what race I was supposed to be. I just kind of leaned one way. Not that it really mattered what face I wore to go get some food. I wondered what Goliath would say if he knew I could change my face willy nilly like this. I set those thoughts aside, and focused on which kind of meat I wanted today.

I didn't really care for fish. Lamb was good, but expensive. Beef was better, but expensive. Pork was my favorite, but it was stupid pricey. Chicken was pretty good as well.

All meat was expensive. Crops grew faster, and were easier to maintain so it was easier to get land for crops vs animals. Plus animals ate other crops. The number of breeds of different types of domestic, and wild animals had dropped a stupid amount in the past two hundred years. Just one good example of this was pigs.

There were only three breeds left. At one time there had been hundreds of different breeds, and types of pigs. To top it off one of the three breeds had been cloned back into existence. It was a smaller breed known for its tasty lean meat. I think it was called Kunekune.

It was a gourmet meat. They didn't even sell it around here. You'd have to go somewhere pretty high end just to find it. I came back to the school, and headed straight to my room. Finding a quiet place to change my face back to its usual as I walked back to the dorms.

I went into my room, and stuffed down every ounce of meat in record time. It was about one forty-five by the time I finished eating. I headed for the meeting point quickly. I couldn't care less. I wasn't a liar.

I hadn't started the fight so I shouldn't have anything to worry about. After I met up with Goliath we both headed for the staff building. We went to the third floor where I was escorted to the disciplinary department. I was sat down in front of a staff member I'd never met before. I bowed my head respectively as before straightening out, and saluting.

"So you're the one that picked a fight with one of the second year students," he laced his fingers together casually.

"No," I snorted, "I was attacked first. I just defended myself."

"Sit down," his brows scrunched up slowly, "I'll know for sure in a minute."

Ability use detected. Analyzing ability.

I sat down, and focused on the whole ability use detected notification. What ability did he plan to use on me? My curiosity was at its peak.

"Did you attack a second year student?" he looked at me.

"Not until after he attacked me," his eyes widened slightly.

"Did you have some sort of plan to incite him into attacking you?"

"Nope," I crossed my arms casually behind my head, "I had no clue he was even there. He just came out of nowhere. He was a good fighter. I had fun fighting him."

"How could you fight an ability user like him without an ability?" He seemed to be thinking it over calmly as he waited for me to answer.

"I have my own ability," I frowned at him, "You can ask Goliath about it."

"Your not registered as having any ability," His frown deepened.

"I only got it recently," I dropped my arms to my side, "I discovered it by accident. I'm not sure what all its capable of either. Goliath plans on helping me register it later."

Analyzation complete. The ability to detect the truth. You can now counter this type of ability.

Good. System make sure he thinks I'm telling the truth.

"A natural mutation?" he started taking notes, "I find that hard to believe. You know how rare that is?"

"Of course I do," I snapped, "I only ever tested to see if I was compatible with an ability. Never to see if I already had one. It's a weird ability."

"What exactly does your ability do?" He was still taking notes.

"It enhances my whole body," I crossed my arms slowly, "Problem is I have to get badly hurt to strengthen it. I could of had it all along, and just not noticed until I spent so much of my time getting my ass kicked."

"That sounds pretty inconvenient," he was noting it all down, "What parts of you does this ability strengthen?"

"Everything," I was getting bored with this, "Strength, speed, makes my skin tougher, and even increases how fast I heal."

"But you can only strengthen this ability by taking damage?" he seemed to be more asking himself than me.

"Yeah unfortunately," I knew I was spouting nonsense, but it explained away why I was getting into so many fights, "Closer I get to death the bigger the boost I get from it. I didn't notice anything really off until after I fell through that rift, and almost got killed over, and over again. Each time I got a little stronger, and healed that much faster."

"If it weren't for the downsides this would be a nice ability to have on our side," He seemed to finish what he was writing, and then started looking over his notes a second time.

"Do you need me for anything else or can I go?" I stood up slowly.

"Goliath knows about your ability already?" He looked at me, "Do you want him to be your handler?"

"Handler?" I cocked my head out of curiosity, "What do you mean?"

"Natural mutations are rare," he started explaining, "They need someone to track the progression of your ability on a month to month basis. Especially since its a growth type ability. We don't know the upper limits of this ability. Once we know more about it we can decide if its an ability worth replicating."

Replicating? Good luck with that. Making Goliath my handler. That was convenient. The one person that actually knows my secret.

"Why Goliath?" I couldn't help, but to ask.

"You trusted him enough to tell him about your ability," he nodded, "He works on the school grounds. Obvious choice really."
