The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Debriefing

Savannah came out about ten minutes later, and then it was my turn. I wanted to get back to my room, and relax a bit before getting some sleep in. It was weird not being dead on my feet after being awake so long. It usually only took me a couple of hours to be exhausted to the point of barely being able to think straight. I rubbed my forehead as I turned, and went into the room.

Savannah's dad was in the room, but he wasn't the one doing the debriefing part. I sat down across the table from the director.

"What exactly happened?" the director was tapping his fingers on the table, "From when you disappeared up until Mr. Earl retrieved you both."

"Well after Luke shoved me through the rift," I kept my face neutral, "I grabbed onto Savannah's wrist by accident when I fell, and drug her through with me by accident. After we fell through the rift we ran around for a while. During all of our running around we found a dead Basilisk. A fresh one. So we hid in its cave to sleep for the night. Then the next day we did some more running around until we found those poachers. They grabbed us, and were talking about selling Savannah or asking for some sort of ransom. They screwed up when they threw us in one of the cages cause they didn't lock it properly so I got out, and unlocked a bunch of the other cages. Then we hid out in one of the cages until it got quiet outside. Once we were sure all the beasts were gone we moved over to the bunker, and locked ourselves in until Mr. Earl showed up. Nothing too exciting really."

"According to Miss Earl the two of you almost died on multiple occasions," The director narrowed his eyes at me.

"You can blame Conrad for my lack of shits given in that department," I glanced over to Mr Earl, "He used to set me on fire almost daily. I'm kind of desensitized to all forms of harm that don't kill me."

If only they knew just how true that statement was. Just didn't have anything to do Conrad regularly burning me. It was more of a turning into a dragon thing. I wanted to know what they were thinking. I wanted them to let me go back to my room.

"Can I go now?" I felt Ethan's fear at the back of my mind, and it brought out my paranoia.

What if Savannah said something that gave me away? I doubted that she would considering how quickly our bond had strengthened when we were almost dying together. I felt my own fear mixing with Ethan's, and I didn't like it, but becoming a dragon had given me the best poker face on the planet as all the internal turmoil remained internal. I sat in the awkwardly silent room as I was stared down on by both one of the four greats, and the most powerful ability user in the school.

"I'm really tired," I covered a false yawn, "And I've had a stressful few days. Can I go?"

The director nodded, and I stood up calmly to go.

"If we have any additional questions we'll call you back," the director used his ability to open the door for me.

I could only begin to guess what that ability was since the door had a metal handle it could be a number of different abilities. I shook off my curiosity mentally as I strode through the door, and calmly went straight for my dorm. I got a few curious looks, and some of the students mumbled rumors I didn't care about just out of ear shot. My mind was focused on two things alone. My two bonded.

The one that had been basically cut off from me for the better part of a week, and the new one that he may or may not know about yet. I felt my bond with Savannah carefully. Why had I doubted her even for a second? Our bond had grown quite solid in our short time together. They were both in the boys dorms.

From what I could tell Ethan was nervously pacing the dorm room, and Savannah was waiting in the lobby. I slowed a bit as I walked. How would I tell Ethan I had also bonded with Savannah? Never mind the fact that her bond was almost as strong as his already. Ethan had actively trying to strengthen our bond since it had formed.

Savannah had just spent a few dangerous days with me. System what is max level of trust bond?

Level 10 is max level of trust bond.

System what happens when trust bond maxes out?

Trust bond evolves.

System what does trust bond evolve into?

Information incomplete due to system damage. Bond evolution is dependent on bonded personality, and capabilities. Unable to provide more information on possible evolutions.

Well at least it gave me something to work off of. I headed into the boys dorm. I couldn't avoid this whole situation long since they both knew exactly where I was at the moment. Wait. I couldn't sense Ethan at all when I'd been off planet.

System what is the maximum range of trust bond?

500 miles.

Well that's a massive area. System will that maximum range go up when the bond evolves?

System damage. Insufficient information.

Great thanks. Irritation towards my stupid system flowed through me. Wait. I didn't go straight to all out rage. I mentally fist pumped.

Having a childish point of view had been fun while it lasted, but it had way too many downsides. Like being angry at the drop of a hat, and throwing temper tantrums. I strode up to the elevator, and hoped in with a few other boys. Savannah joined me in the elevator. She stood next to me calmly as the other kids in the elevator fidgeted.

Five kids in the elevator, and the only calm people were Savannah, and me. They were itching to ask questions from what I could tell. It wasn't often people came back from accidental rift crossings. Not only did we come back, but we were both virtually unscathed. We'd become famous the moment we came back alive.
