The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

My eyes narrowed. The irritation was back to yank me away again. Goliath yanked me away from Wyatt for the third time that day.

"I need you to make some spikes out of the trees for the trenches," Goliath pushed me toward the trees, "You're not allowed to go back until you're done."

I knew what would happen if I went back before the task was finished. Ten trees were sliced down with a single strike of my telekinesis. I picked up the trees with ease. Setting them in a stack before I set to work splitting them, and turning them into incredibly sharp spikes. As sharp as I could make wood.

Slamming them into the ground deeply. Two feet apart so we could pass through if needed. The trench was largely meant for people to fall in, and die. It didn't take me long to fill the first trench. The second, and third trenches were bigger.

Arranged in half circles going away from the cliff face that Wyatt now rested against. It was a simple layout meant to keep the enemies from getting too close to him. Our camp was setup next to him. Aurora wasn't very comfortable being that close to Wyatt so she often slept outside of the camp. I wondered if this was the battlefield Wyatt was worried about.

The peace of the grass made it hard for me to compare this place to the bloodstained, and blurry images Wyatt had shown me. There were definite similarities. It was a scary thought. One I didn't want to visit. I didn't want Wyatt to be at the center of a battle field while he was like this.

I didn't know how long we'd been here, but I was beginning to think that we were going to have to fight a battle here. We didn't have enough people to fight a battle right now. I sliced down another ten trees, and started dividing them up to work on the second trench. Goliath wanted to put up some walls once we were done with the trenches. He was planning for a fight as well.

That was the only reason I was listening to his orders at all. My muscles tensed slowly as I thought about it. There was only the three of us, Aurora, the three that came with her, the hatchling, who I hadn't bothered to learn the name of yet, and our new friend Bryce the blacksmith. Plus Gaia. That made ten of us.

Ten vs an unknown number of enemies. This wasn't a good situation for us. We were going to run into problems when an army of enemies came down on us. I was glad that Goliath was putting together some defenses, and traps. I finished the trees I was working on, and sat down in the grass for a break.

The grass was a bit stiff, but my skin seemed a lot harder then normal human skin. I'd tried stabbing myself with a butter knife. A normal everyday butter knife broke against my skin. I was sure a magical alloy would be able to cut me, but normal metals just weren't enough anymore. I hadn't told Savannah about my brush with stupidity.

She would have taken the time to tell me how stupid it was to try something like that. What could I say? Guy's did stupid things sometimes. Just to see if it would work. It was a why the hell not kind of situation.

I laid back in the grass. Allowing myself to relax after a hard few hours of work. Ten minutes would be enough rest for now. When are you going to wake up Wyatt? Haven't you slept long enough?

Magnus was on the move. I wasn't a hundred percent sure that the plan to connect him with my master had worked, but he was securing a small army really quickly. All thirty of his students, and over a hundred various military personnel had already signed up to go into battle with him. At least that was the number of men I knew of. If he'd come to some sort of arrangement with my master that meant he would also have his personal guard.

A hundred highly trained elves made up my masters personal guard. Magnus seemed to be certain he could win this battle. Even with a powerful spirit guarding an entire continent of Greenland. This had me on edge. It meant that he had probably secured the aid of my master.

I really hoped that my master would be able to hold his temper enough to not reveal our relation. The dragon had been sitting idle for a little over two months. I hadn't been able to get ahold of my master after revealing Magnus's interest in killing the dragon. I'd set the pieces in place for them to meet, and that was the last time I'd heard of it. I rubbed the upper curve of my ear nervously.

It was a nervous habit. I really couldn't shake the habit. Not since they altered my ears. I frowned as I felt the distinct warm wetness of blood on the upper side of my ear. I'd gone too far.

The last couple weeks had been stressful, and I'd been virtually unable to stop since the dragon had been found on earth. My master's interest in him caused me a great deal of stress. He wanted to kill that dragon more then anything. I didn't want him to get what he wanted. At the same time I knew that if he didn't get what he wanted he would take it out on my mother.

It was a tight, and very uncomfortable noose around my neck. The stress of it was slowly choking the life out of me. Physiologically speaking. The others were starting to notice the stress, and lack of appetite. I didn't want to come face to face with my master, and have him break my cover.

"What are you doing?" Jack, the student behind me, asked.
