The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Ethan frowned. He didn't like that I was going to go back for Sekka. He started issuing orders to his men, and the injured were escorted inside. I followed them into the complex. I didn't worry about it much.

Ethan could handle the orders. I had no need to interfere with what he had going. I wasn't that good at organizing people or strategically moving groups of people. Talking to people would be something I wouldn't do much of in the future. Most people were terrified of dragons even in the past when they were commonplace so it stood to reason that no matter how good I was they would keep that mentality.

I might as well create a proper fearsome reputation while I was at it. My scalesr were already incredibly tough. I'd gained some more toughness while I was here on the elven world. I sat down inside of the complex, and waited for my mana to regenerate naturally. I could gather mana from the air around me, but I was tired enough that I didn't want to bother with it for the time being.

I yawned as I sat down next to the gate on a bench. I was stronger then most people thought I was, but that didn't mean I was invincible. I frowned to myself as I allowed the day to pass peacefully as I recovered. I slept for an hour to refresh my mind, but the rest of the time I was making plans. I moved after night had fallen.

It was time to enact part one of my plans. I walked out of the complex like I owned the place. I opened a portal, and moved to the valley of death. Then I opened a secondary portal to allow my pet to communicate, and come to me. She might help in what I was going to do next.

She flew through my portal a second later without hesitation. Her trust in her master was a bit much in my opinion. Although it wasn't as creepy as Ethan trusting me from day one. I know it's a bit late to find it disturbing now, but there were so many things about being a dragon that I just accepted from day one due to the influence of the system. Now that the influence of the system was waning I could actually think clearly for the first time since becoming a dragon there were a great many things that disturbed me greatly.

The waning of the systems influence was slow. It would give me a good amount of time to adjust naturally. I inhaled slowly. Exhaling equally slow as I waited for my pet to get here. Now that I was thinking about it I realized I hadn't thought of a name for her yet.

What would I call her? I had another hour or so before she reached the portal. Although leaving the portal open wasn't the greatest plan she wouldn't be able to sense me otherwise. Her ability to sense her master was far inferior to my ability to sense my bonded. I could still chat with Ethan from this distance.

I frowned to myself thoughtfully. I could sense the wild flight heading in my direction. It seems they noticed me. My portal was small, but it was ready to be enlarged the moment my pet came close. She had blue scales, and ice powers so maybe a name that had something to do with water.

Something simple. Maybe Aqua? Short, simple, and it means water. I was honestly more then a little curious what she thought of it. From what I could tell the elves rarely named their wyverns.

I guess it had something to do with their greed. A great many just referred to them by species. I honestly found it more then a little annoying. They treated people as property, and didn't even bother to name their trusted mounts. Another painful pulse ripped it's way through my body.

They were getting really hard to ignore. These pulses of pain. I wanted to ignore the pulses of pain, but there was literally no way for me to ignore them entirely. When they were weaker I could just shake it off, but it felt almost as if my core was shattering each time a pulse went through me. Every time the pulse subsided I would check my core, and find that it wasn't damaged in the slightest.

Ethan desperately wanted to be by my side at the moment, but I ordered him not to come to me until the evacuation was complete. That was his one, and only priority. He moved with purpose. He had every intention of finishing up this evacuation in a day or less. I had every intention of finishing up with my end today as well.

I was just hoping my pet would get here first so I could introduce myself in a way that would allow me to fight the strongest one on one. I sensed her coming close to the portal about the time the wyverns were getting close. I widened the portal to let her through. She slammed into the trees on the other side of the portal. She snorted in irritation before coming back to my side like a happy puppy.

The joy she derived from meeting me was more then a little enjoyable. She demanded attention. I wasn't in the mood to deal with her happy attitude at the moment. I changed forms slowly. Switching from human to dragon far slower then I needed.

I realized I was doing it for my lovely new pet. She recoiled as my own bulk grew to rival her own. I was glad I'd fused with time so even if someone found me here they wouldn't be able see what I was doing. I'd moved my armband to a finger as an afterthought as it started getting to tight on my arm. I used my talons to scratch under her chin.
