Chapter 07:Hopeful mist.

"God has no Beginning…nor an End"

After the unsuccessful battle. Azazel takes V's heart away and instructs him to go far west, to Meselnova. As V feared that he would have to go on this journey alone, The man(Kevin) and Eve made his worries disappear by accompanying him on this journey. And now continuing on their story….

It had been 4 days after their departure from Encford. They've progressively moved towards their destination.

The man(Kevin)-" Aight…from the way we're moving we might be able to arrive in Ethdam before the next full moon"

Eve-" And when's the next full moon?"

The man(Kevin)-" About 2 weeks"

Eve-" THAT'S A LONG TIME!!"

The man(Kevin)-" This is the long part for now, given if everything goes well we might be able to reach Ethdam in about 3 months"

Eve-" And we'll be mobile for the most part huh?... Ah ~ sounds pretty fun…exploring new places, fighting monsters, and visiting many places…sounds exciting, doesn't it V?"

As Eve looks back to V, He seems distant, almost stoic as he looks around him with the wind slowly flowing through them and their robes. V looked around, seeing only a barren wasteland filled with nothing but draught and not a single speck of life.

Eve-" Ah…you ok dude?"

V looks at Eve with saddening eyes…he feels mournful about the place around him as if something is tugging at him, making him think about his place and where he stood.

V-"...It's…like this..everywhere?"

V's expression left them pondering.

The man(Kevin)-" It's been like this ever since the so-called angels came…the land has gotten worse and worse..even though this world already dubbed itself as the end"

V-"...Things..weren't like this before…was it?"

The man(Kevin)-" I don't know…I can hardly remember the last time I was happy…even at that time.."

V-" I see.."

The man(Kevin)-"...For the most part I know there are 2 cities that are nothing like what we see here, trees full of life, clean water, and fruits that we've never seen since the day humanity fell...They're guarded heavily by those angels. guarding would be a stretch..they practically made it their utopia.….

"One of them being Meselnova…"

They continued their journey, moving forward each day, there were days when they were confronted by various monsters. Sometimes even bandits…some days went on easy… some days not so much. Nighttime was V's favorite moment when he felt at ease. With V feeling at ease, everyone could feel at ease as well, as they were worried if V had gotten any trauma from his prior experience.

Later, Eve goes to V, offering him a drink. She sits beside V.

Eve-" How're you holding up so far?"

V-"....You guys are worried about something…and I have a feeling it's something related to me"

Eve-" Well…a lot happened right?...having your heart taken by someone you don't even know…well the 'taking a heart out' aspect is pretty unreal enough…"

V-" Heh..Tell me about it...At the end of our fight…Azazel changed…he didn't seem the type to kill people for enjoyment…he looked like he had a purpose..a reason…a reason he couldn't tell a soul"

Eve-" Ahuh…don't you think you're overthinking it?"

V-"...yeah…I guess you might be right.."

Eve-" Try to get some sleep bud, Kevin's keeping watch tonight"

V-" ...Say...Do you ever get dreams…dreams...where you keep searching for something…you keep searching and searching…but the answer is already right in front of you..but you're afraid to acknowledge it.."

Eve-" That's quite specific…I don't dream much at all…"

V-" I see…"

Eve-"...The last dream I had was about my family…"

V-" Family?..Oh..yeah you explained what a family is.."

Eve-" And I'm still shocked you don't know something like this..like everybody's got parents dude otherwise how'd you exist in the first place...my mom..dad..my kid brother…the last dream I had about them was when I was maybe 6…we were all at the dinner table…praying before starting our meal…we were laughing at dad's silly and blatantly speaking cringe jokes and how mom would react towards them…it was a nice dream…"

V-" Family…they seem..important to you…where are they now?"

Eve-" Dead…everyone I know is dead…the only family I have left is Kevin…he's my uncle.."

V-"I…am so sorry to hear that…"

Eve-" Pfft~ chill dude…I don't miss them much… I don't know why though…"

V-"...Eve-"

Eve-" AIGHT! TIME TO SLEEP…we got an early start tomorrow! G'night V"

V-" Y-yeah…see ya tomorrow.."

Eve goes to bed. Even with The man(Kevin) keeping watch for the night, V couldn't get the concept of a family out of his mind.

V-" Family….mom…dad…."...

"Brother"...

.

V had later gone to sleep that night, But it would not be a normal night for him.

"....Give…give him…back…."

V-"...W-what…"

"My…L—---…Please…give him back…"

V-" A voice….who's there?..."

V opens his eyes, seeing nothing but pitch-black darkness. And V could do nothing but think out loud.

"Weightless…nothing was there to manifest…nothing but a voice..crying out..for something. A prayer?A sign?...or a request?...questions formulate out of nothing.Questions?What questions? What kind of questions? Why ask questions? Who's answering them..why ask questions when they've already answered? questions..why.....

Plead.

"Amid the darkness, a spotlight arose…how peculiar I thought...I went in closer and closer to see what might be there under the spotlight in a place like this, a place devoid of love and warmth. Cold, very cold, As I come closer and closer…I look at the picture that unfolded before my eyes. A woman covered fully in white silk, from head to toe, standing in front of a white casket, looking at it with teary eyes, eyes filled with despair, rage, and sadness…as her tears fall down her pale cheeks, she puts her hands in front of her, reaching into the casket, I come closer and closer, trying to understand what's going on before my eyes,...all I could see was a fetus with its umbilical cord cut off, moreover, the fetus seemed incomplete, I saw the woman, gently taking the fetus onto her hand and raising it above her head, she pleaded, she pleaded again and again, but nothing happened, while all I could look at was the casket where the fetus was kept, Bloodstained cloth. I looked over and I see…the woman staring into me with her rage-filled eyes, her teary eyes, widened and staring at me without a single sigh or a sound, sound?..no there was sound..hers..her crying voice later sounded like loud static noise, enough to make a man go insane, enough to make your ears bleed, what is this? a nightmare? no. This is something else,"

"This is-"

V jolted out of sleep in a cold sweat. He gasped for air as he contemplated what just happened to him. The man(Kevin) asked V what had just happened to him.

The man(Kevin)-" Woah woah…easy does it kid…easy does it…what's wrong?..ya had a nightmare or something?"

V-"...I…I don't know…it felt too real to be a nightmare…I don't have a good feeling about this.."

The man(Kevin)-" About what?"

V-"...You can go to sleep... I'll keep watching now"

The man(Kevin)-" Hey…don't push yourself too much…if ya need me. then wake me up okay?"

V-" Yeah…sure.."

The man(Kevin) had later gone to sleep. V sits close to the fire, the cold night breeze reminded him of the place in his dream, well there's no guarantee that it was a "dream" in the first place. The moon shone brighter than ever but V's focus was only on the fire..and on his" dream"...

The next day, they continued their journey, sometimes with slight hiccups, taking detours, Until they had reached somewhere they had not intended to land.

A thick mist was in front of their path.

The man(Kevin)-" Hm?... Oi check this out"

Eve-" Woah!! Can't even see through it…must be sopping wet though.."

V-" Do we go past it?"

The man(Kevin)-" Normally that is what we'd do but…we're already surrounded but it…"

As they were deciding whether to take a detour or not, they were already surrounded by the thick mist.

The man(Kevin)-" We don't have a choice…stick close or we'll get lost."

Eve-" Great…time to get sopping wet and have my nose itch like hell.."

V-".... I don't like the look of this…"

As such, they entered the thick mist. Being very cautious and alert. They continued walking and walking until they had reached a land they'd never seen before.

A place never seen before left them in awe. A place so green and humid, where trees and plants were flourishing, This was a sight to behold.

The man(Kevin)-" Well I'll be damned…"

Eve-" WOAH WOAH WOAH! AYO AM I TRIPPIN'??! THIS CAN'T BE REAL. YOU SEE THIS V?"

V-" What…"

Eve-" This place…it's so green and full of life!... Hey, let's go check it out!"

The man(Kevin)-" Hey! Slow down, we're still in unknown territory, we still have to be cautious"

Eve-" I'll be fine~ Let's go V!"

V-" Yeah..sure…"

They ventured deeper, entering a forest. Large trees that could reach the skies, and various types of vegetation. This all left Eve and The man(Kevin) speechless.

The man(Kevin)-" This is quite amazing…I've never seen a place like this…it's full of life, trees, fruits…"

Eve-" And the place is so beautiful too…Hey look over there, there's a river"

The man(Kevin)-" Be careful now, we still don't know what lurks in these woods."

They went towards the river where the water, was sparkling and as clear as crystal. Both Eve and The man(Kevin) were astonished to see what was going on around them, All whilst V kept quiet the whole time.

The man(Kevin)-" Hey kid! Could ya hold this bag for me?"

V-" Huh?..Yeah sure"

The man(Kevin)-" This river is the best source for fish…let's camp out here for now and gather some supplies-"

V-" No…We're not alone…"

As V had stated, they soon realized that they were being watched from afar. The man(Kevin) and Eve take a defensive stance, but soon a very old man comes out of the forest. He proclaimed that he came in peace.

The Old man-" We're sorry for alarming you like this but do believe, it was not our intention to make you hostile towards us"

The man(Kevin)-" Who are you and why should we trust your word?"

The Old Man-" We come from a village nearby, we felt an unknown presence and as such we came to check it out…but it seems like our Goddess had sent over a blessing to us."

The man(Kevin)-" What do you mean by that?"

The old man-" That is something we can discuss later, for now, how about coming to our village? I'm the head chef, Adolf"

The man(Kevin)-" How can I trust your word…I mean you might be leading us to a trap.."

The Old man-" Hmm…a very cautious man…in that case, you may take my life as a price for your trust."

Judging from the situation and look of Old Man Adolf, it was apparent he was not joking around. The look on the man's eyes was sharp even for his old age. And as such...

The man(Kevin)-" Ho?... I see…I'll take your word then"

Eve-" Oi Kevin…you sure about this?"

The man(Kevin)-"...I'll trust them for now…but if you ever go against your word then I won't hesitate to take your life."

Old man Adolf-" Yes..now if you will follow me kindly"

The man(Kevin)-" Yeah…V, You alright? You seem distracted"

V-" Huh?...No..i'm fine"

The man(Kevin)-"Hmm…If you say so..but keep your guard up"

V-" Yeah..I'll do so"

V and the others followed the Chief and the other scouts were watching them from a distance. Soon enough they had reached the village. As they get closer and closer, everyone in the village comes out to celebrate.

The man(Kevin)-" Why are they celebrating our arrival?"

Old man Adolf-" Well you see, we have an oracle in our village"

The man(Kevin)-" An oracle you say?"

Old man Adolf-" Yes…She received a prophecy from All mighty Goddess Azeya"

The man(Kevin)-"...Azeya…never heard of her"

Old man Adolf-" She's our guardian deity and the one who's protected us all this time and protected us from the harsh environment outside the mist"

The man(Kevin)-" So this oracle prophesied our coming? "

Old man Adolf-" Yes and in such I can assure you we mean no harm…we just want to show you the kindness of our small village"

The man(Kevin)-" I see…seems good enough"

V-" Kevin…you should be more careful"

The man(Kevin)-" Well they seem harmless enough..and if something happens I doubt we'll get into any trouble"

V-" Kevin..what are you-"

Eve-" Yeah V, chill out, they seem very friendly"

V-"...Somethings weird…it's like they've completely let their guard down after entering the village.."

V-"...ok"

The Village wholeheartedly greeted them and the celebration of their coming was grand. The place was full of life and colors. Music and the residents were dancing. They welcomed them with various gifts and lavish meals. The man(Kevin) and Eve wholeheartedly accepted their offerings and ate the meals given to them. V had an upset stomach so he did not eat or drink anything. Seeing the festive looks on the village residences made The man(Kevin) and Eve very happy.

The man(Kevin)-" The food here is so good….I haven't had something like this for a while now"

Eve-" The water here is so clean and sweet, You gotta try this V"

V-" I'm good…I don't have much of an appetite…. You guys eat"

Eve-" Well.. If you say so but it sure is no joke the food, even the air here is much fresher than outside."

Old man Adolf-" Yes..Our deity protects us from the harsh environments outside and even offers us a land so fertile, we truly have been blessed by Goddess Azeya"

Eve-" I see...In any case, I guess Thanks a lot Goddess Azeya- "

V-" I see..but it is kind of curious how you all can believe that a goddess or even a god exists"

V's question made Old Man Adolf and the people around him silent. The atmosphere had turned sour.

Old man Adolf-" Pardon Master V…what do you mean by that?"

V-"....I mean..from what I've come to know is that the angels themselves confirm God's death..then how can you say a Goddess like yours can come to exist?"

Old man Adolf-" By all due respect…You are disrespecting our guardian deity."

V's questioning made the people around him give hateful glares. Even the chief himself was not fond of V's opinions, And such...

V-" With all due respect…."

"Don't believe in a false God's Hope"

Old man Adolf-" MASTER V YO-!"

The man(Kevin)-" OK ok! Let's break this off ok? V, how about you go to rest up in your room? I'll handle this"

V-"...Do whatever you want..you've already blinded yourself.."

The man(Kevin)-" What?"

V-" I'll be in my room..if you need me then don't hesitate"

The man(Kevin)-" Yeah…good night.."

V's behavior was surprising to the man(Kevin). The Kid who seemingly had no interest in God or the past of the world is somehow arguing about a false god. Anyhow the man(Kevin) calmed down the Chief and apologized for V stepping out of line.

V and the group stayed in the village for about a week. Watching the agricultural development of the village and how peaceful and friendly the people were. The man(Kevin) and Eve spend a great time with the people here..while V locked himself in his room..not even coming out to drink a glass of water.

And on a certain night, The chief of the village came to the man(Kevin) to request assistance on a certain matter. A matter they would soon regret.

The man(Kevin)-" The Village seems to be on edge. Something seems wrong, Is there any problem Chief?"

Old man Adolf-" Well…we humbly apologize for what we'll be asking of you but…if we don't I'm afraid the Village will sooner or later perish"

Eve-" What?!"

The man(Kevin)-"...Would you explain what is going on.."

The man(Kevin) and the Chief sat down to discuss the village's future and the imminent danger approaching.

The man(Kevin)-" Now….what is going on? Why is the village on edge?"

Old man Adolf-" You see…A few months ago, A monster was spotted in the deeper side of the forest, which is the main reason why we've restricted ourselves and only been attending to this part of the forest."

Eve-" OI OI OI! Isn't this like a serious issue?"

The man(Kevin)-" How's the situation right now?"

Old man Adolf-" Well…we thought it wouldn't be much of a problem but it seems like the monster is slowly approaching this part of the forest and if it does that I'm afraid we won't be able to survive for much longer"

The man(Kevin)-" I see…how can we help?"

Old man Adolf-" I am sorry to put this burden on you even though you are our guests…we request..if you would be kind enough to slay the monster"

V-" Request denied"

V's sudden Entrance and rejection left everyone in the room shocked and baffled.

The man(Kevin)-" V.."

Eve-" V! What are you saying-"

V-" Request Denied…fix this yourself"

The man(Kevin)-" V…I know you feel uncomfortable here...However, these people have been kind to us, so it would be unfair to leave them in a state like this"

V-" That does not concern me…From my perspective…These people are fine by themselves..."

Old man Adolf-" Master V…without your help, we might perish...I still don't know why you feel such displeasure towards us but if we've done anything to offend you then we humbly apologize-"

V-" Quit your blinded begging"

The man(Kevin)-" V…Why do you reject them, What have they done?"

Eve-" Yeah V…this isn't like you.."

V-"...If you truly insist on helping them…

"Then help yourself.."

Eve-" What do you mean?"

V-" Do Whatever you want... None of this concerns me so I'm not going to do anything"

Old man Adolf-" But it would be better if-"

The man(Kevin)-" Chief it'll be fine, Despite our looks we're pretty strong, we should be able to take care of any monsters like Remnents or whatnot"

Eve-" You think we'll be able to do anything?"

The man(Kevin)-" We're from the organization Eve…

"We were trained to kill monsters"

As such, They decided to set out to kill the Monster, terrorizing the village. Fully confident, The man(Kevin) went to his room while Eve was puzzled.

Eve went to V's chambers to check on him. Eve knocks on his door, V tells Eve to come in and sees V's room covered in some pitch-black substance.

Eve-" What is with your room?.. it's like covered in black liquid.."

V-" Oh..yeah..I don't even want to touch the floors here so I covered the walls and everything with my Gift "

Eve-" What's your about?"

V-" I don't know…I know how to activate it and I guess covering the room is also a part of its ability, But I don't know what the purpose of this ability is"

Eve-" So you're currently using this ability to make a giant matt"

V-" Basically yeah"

Eve-" Hmm…Hey, how do you activate it though?"

V-"...The Gift is called Avarice…but I don't understand why it's called this.."

Eve-" Ahuh…we all got our worries huh…Say...Are you sure?...letting me and Kevin go and kill the monster?"

V-"...I refuse to help them…but I accept you guys…Eve..if any moment you feel the situation is too unbearable for you.."

"Then Call out my name"

The next day,

The man(Kevin) and Eve set out to look for the monster and slay it,

The man(Kevin)-" Aight, preparations are done, we're ready to go anytime"

Eve-" Everything's fine here, ready when you are"

The man(Kevin)-" Right, all that's left is to let V know we're going now"

Old man Adolf-" Allow me, I'll let Master V know about your departure"

The man(Kevin)-" That's alright, I know you and him don't exactly get along"

Old man Adolf-" No No No..no need to trouble yourself about something like that, I'm sure Master V will come around soon enough"

The man(Kevin)-" Well…if you say so then I'll hold you on to that"

Old man Adolf-" Yes…may Goddess Azeya keep you safe in this difficult task"

The man(Kevin)-" Oh don't worry…we won't be needing your Goddess's blessing"

The man(Kevin) and Eve went into the deeper woods, searching for the monster terrorizing the village residents. The deeper they want the darker it gets. Shadows crept onto them and light diminished every step of the way. The eariness made them uneasy. Cold, very cold, it got so cold, steam would come out of their mouth. Shivering cold, they went in deeper and deeper…Right until they found the "Monster"

The man(Kevin)-"Eve…stay vigilant…I think it's close"

Eve-" It's too freaking cold for me to chill so yeah I'd like to stay vigilant"

The man(Kevin)-" Haha very funny kid…Look over there"

Eve-" Is that the monster?"

In the distance, A beast, covered in hair from head to toe, wandered around the deeper woods. The man(Kevin) and Eve are on standby, ready to attack at any moment, but they have underestimated their situation.

Just as they were commencing their ambush, In a flash, The beast looked directly at them. No sound was made when the beast suddenly disappeared, The beast Creeped up right behind them. Breathing down their necks.

Eve-" BEHIND!"

The man(Kevin)-" EVE, MOVE!"

They stepped back from the beast, The man(Kevin) pulled out his Axe and Struck the beast. But it did not affect it. Eve shoots a barrage of Arrows Which disorients the beast. The man(Kevin) Falls back and Strikes the left leg of the beast. The beast trips on its back.

The man(Kevin)-" THIS IS IT!"

The man(Kevin) Swang his last attack, proclaiming his victory, but alas, taking the beast down would not be an easy task. The beast grabs hold of the man(Kevin) and slams him down the ground, injuring the man(Kevin) greatly. But they had a trick up their sleeves as well.

Eve-" KEVIN! YOU OK?"

The man(Kevin)-" I-I'm fine...You focus on distracting the thing!"

Eve-"...I HAVE AN IDEA, HOLD IT OFF FOR A MIN-"

The man(Kevin)-" OI! I'M THE INJURED ONE HERE!.. HURRY UP!"

Eve started to say some sort of chant from the distance.

The man(Kevin)-" YOU'RE GONNA DO THAT?HERE??!"

As Eve was chanting, a small flashback came to her mind.A flashback between V and her in his room.

V-"...Call out for me..."

Eve-" ...I mean even if I called for you I'd be dead at that point no?"

V-" Do you not fear death?"

Eve-" Hmm…not really... I Don't understand the concept of death..like where am I supposed to go when I do inevitably hit the bucket?"

V-"...Yeah..Who knows what's out there after death…"

Eve-" And yet..some part of me thinks that I should fear death..even though I've never experienced it myself…"

V-"..Will..you Two be fine tomorrow?"

Eve-" Yeah… we people from the Organization are trained to deal with Stuff like Ghouls, remnants, and other what not…most of the people in the organization are Gift Users so we're a pretty capable bunch"

V-" Does that include you both? Are you both Gift Users too?"

Eve-" I'm not…Kevin is a Gift user, he's got the Gift of Immence Vitality And Strength, It's the reason why carries around that big hunk of metal"

V-" I see…So..he traded it huh…"

Eve-" Traded what?"

V-" His soul"

Eve-" Ah…Yeah…I mean he had no choice..he did it solely to protect me from those fucks…Sometimes I think that every tragedy of his is caused because of me.."

V-" I beg to differ...From what I've seen..he's given his all to protect the one family he has left…Don't you think so too?"

Eve-" I…Don't know..."

Eve tears up*

"I guess...I still regret my existence.."

V-" I see…Well. I don't..so don't devalue your life..he made his choice"

After that V was silent, whilst a flood of emotions overwhelmed Eve..she couldn't help but cry out the regret of Trading The man(Kevin)'s soul for her sake. All V could do was lend an ear and a shoulder to cry on.

V-" You're not a Gift user, are you?"

Eve-" Nah..I Don't think I will be at any point...But That doesn't mean I can't hold up a fight…"

V-" Then How do you intend to fight?"

Eve-" Hm? Ah, that? You see my bow's not ordinary, you wanna know why?"

"Because my bow has a soul of its own"

Coming back to the present, From a distance, Eve starts to chant in a strange language.

As she chants, her bow starts to scream as it morphs into 2x its size and changes its appearance.

Eve-" Y'know what they call the people from the organization?"

V-"Heh~.. enlighten me"

Eve-

"We're known as Hunters"

Eve plants the bow on the ground as support, she pulls back the string of the arrow with great might, and matter starts to form in the shape of an arrow, intangible for humans but…Deadly for monsters.

The man(Kevin)-" ANY MINUTE NOW?!"

Eve-" LOCKED AND LOADED, MOVE!!"

The man(Kevin) lets go of the beast and makes a run for it. The beast gets stunned and looks at Eve.

"Single-Shot Dominance!!"

Eve-" EAT THIS YOU BIG HAIRY MOTHERFUCKER!"

Eve lets go of the bowstring and with high velocity, Eve's arrow hits directly at the beast's core. Desimating the beast and everything around him, Leaving nothing but the beast's blood, smeared on the ground.

The man(Kevin)-"Eve…Don't you think you overdid it a lil' bit?"

Eve-" Hey a dead monster is still a dead monster"

The man(Kevin)-"Haaa…It's good to know you can hold yourself up but still don't rely on that kinda strength too much"

Eve-" Yeah Yeah Yeah…anyways the thing's dead so do we just like take it to the village or something?"

The man(Kevin)-" Oh yeah? How do you suppose we do that huh?? There's nothing left of it"

Eve-"....We can just say like "I shoot, big hairy monster go boom"

The man(Kevin)-" STOP IT! YOU SOUND SCARIER IF YOU DESCRIBE IT LIKE THAT!"

Eve-" Well, in any case, the job's done so the villagers will rest assured now"

The man(Kevin)-" I guess I could collect some of the blood on the ground as proof-"

Eve-" Hey…Kevin.."

The man(Kevin)-" Hm?...what's up?"

Eve-"...How do we get back?.."

Before they knew it they were surrounded by the woods. The thick fog made it even harder for them to identify where they'd been previously. The woods seemed more ominous and darker.

The man(Kevin)-"...Eve...Stay close..to…me?"

As The man(Kevin) looked back, there were no traces of Eve.

The man(Kevin) was alone in the forest, cold, dark,

"E-Eve?....EVE!..the forest seems different. She was just here, where did she go? Eve... I have to look for her. But how? huh..the ground..there's no trace of blood…there's no footprints or anything…huh..I feel different…where's Eve..wait..was..she even here?"

The man(Kevin) was lost.

With Eve missing the man(Kevin) kept losing his sanity.

It had been nightfall. V was in his room without ever stepping a foot outside of it. Noises can be heard right outside of his room. V became cautious of the noises outside and so for the first time he stepped out of his room. Sparks fly out of V's room, exploding into oblivion.

After the explosion, the chief comes onto the scene.

Resident-"..It is done sir, there are no signs of the leach"

Old man Adolf-" Very well…may goddess Azeya continue to protect us"

The chief had planned to assassinate V. but their plan would be foiled soon enough.

"Killing me with explosions huh.."

The chief gasps as cold sweat comes down his face.

V comes out of a dark substance that was cloaking him and saved him from the explosion.

V-" Yeah I'm gonna be honest…not the brightest idea…"

Old man Adolf-" H-H...HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?!"
